The students, faculty and staff of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) came together this month to show their solidarity in the face of tragedy. Fellow artisans joined efforts to create a Peace Garden in the LIHSA courtyard in honor of school shooting victims everywhere.

Students planted 239 plants, commemorating each school or college campus shooting since the Sandy Hook massacre in

2012. The Peace Garden celebrates the vibrancy of life, artistically honoring the victims while uniting LIHSA students in the pursuit of peace.

The garden features nourishing vegetable plants as well as brightly colored flowers in the flush of their first bloom, representing the unique beauty of each life lost and the importance of nurturing all life so that it can thrive.

Contract Renewed

The Massapequa Philharmonic, the principal orchestra serving Massapequa and Long Island, has extended David Bernard’s contract as their Music Director.

The extension secures Bernard’s position with the orchestra until 2020.

Having been appointed Music Director in 2016 after a number of successful years of serving as guest conducting, Bernard’s first seasons with the MPO have been a hearty success. As well as pushing artistic standards ever-higher, Bernard has brought his popular and accessible ‘InsideOut Concerts’ concept to the orchestra, formed partnerships with local businesses and arts institutions.

One of his most admired accomplishments has been the partnership with the

Eglevsky Ballet, resulting in that company’s first run of Nutcracker performances with live orchestra for years.

“David Bernard has been a wonderful leader for the Massapequa Philharmonic,” says the orchestra’s President, Nicholas Healy, “His vitality and his vision for the orchestra, both artistically and in terms of its role in the community, have been incredibly positive. He knows how to inspire our musicians, and our audiences are in turn inspired. We’re delighted to have secured David as our Music Director for another two years.”

Bernard, who is also Music Director of the New York City-based Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, says, “I knew from the first moment

on the podium with this wonderful MPO family that this would be a special relationship. And not only on the podium; everyone in this orchestra, onstage or off, has a warmth and a dedication that it is a privilege to encounter, still more to lead as Music Director. And that feeling translates to our audiences as well, who are part of the MPO every bit as much as the players and the administration team. Making music is about community - we the MPO are there with our audiences, with our partners, with our region. I am proud and delighted to continue to bring great music to Long Island as Music Director of the Massapequa Philharmonic.”

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit.

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming.

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.

Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members.

Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Hot ‘n Cold ’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings.

How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come.

In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals.

Year after year, I am struck by

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring.

I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats.

As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg.

Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing.

Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point.

And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather.

Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

Odyssey Analysis As part of their study of the ancient Greek epic poem “The Odyssey,” students in Kristin Petersen’s English language arts classes at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus made positive and negative decision charts. The ninthgraders analyzed the decisions made throughout the story by Odysseus and determined if they were good or bad.

For example, Ms. Petersen said, at one point Odysseus saved his

crew from certain death, and students analyzed if his actions were heroic or if he did it for selfish reasons. They learned that there isn’t always a right or wrong answer, and that decisions can be subjective.

“It got them to think outside of the box,” Ms. Petersen said.

“They engaged in meaningful dialogue as they looked at the decision-making process in a holistic manner.”

The positive and negative

decision charts are a way of having students analyze literature in an interesting and relatable manner. Ms. Petersen explained that the students worked in groups and didn’t necessarily agree if a decision was good or bad, which led to some vigorous debates.

She said it was important that students learned to listen to each other and to respect each other’s viewpoints, which are valuable life lessons.

In preparation for their trip to Old Bethpage Village Restoration in April, second-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned about maps and directions.

Before taking their trip to the recreated mid-19th century village, students reviewed a map of the grounds and planned their route to travel from building to building.

Stops included the old schoolhouse, general store and farmhouse, and a walk past the baseball field.

Every student was treated to a pretzel and a root beer.

Second-grade teacher Janeen Signorile said that as part of the second-grade social studies curriculum, students learn about the evolution of communities.

Old Bethpage Village Restoration serves an example of a rural town

that also includes many elements found in modern communities.

It was a particularly exciting trip for one of Ms. Signorile’s students, Owen Lavey, whose great-greatgrandparents owned the Noon Inn. The house was originally located in East Meadow and later relocated to Old Bethpage to become part of the recreated village.

Distinctive Honor

New York State Senator John E. Brooks recognized Massapequa resident Tamara Baker as the New York State Senate District 8 Woman of Distinction 2018 for her work with

the We Care Blankets organization, creating and delivering handmade blankets to children with cancer. Tamara was honored at the Women of Distinction ceremony

at the capitol in Albany yesterday, May 1st.

Senator Brooks said, “Ms. Baker’s contributions to comfort and care for others is an extraordinary demonstration of human kindness and selflessness.

What Tamara has started as a labor of love and compassion she has developed into a movement of people crafting ‘comfort items’ to be given to those that need someone to show they care. Those that receive Ms. Baker’s blankets surely have experienced a tangible sense of comfort from these handmade gifts.”

We Care Blankets, which started with donated space in Merrick from Tamara’s then-employer, is an army of volunteers that delivers to more than 30 hospitals

throughout Long Island and NYC Metro areas, as well as other parts of the USA. The group also creates sweaters, booties, hats and blankets for hospital’s neonatal units and financially needy newborns in need of clothing to wear home.

Baker, a grandmother to five, has always looked to help her family and community succeed. While raising her children, she served as Vice President of her local Civic Association and volunteered to teach preschool in the Lindenhurst School District. When her three daughters expressed interest in the Girl Scouts, Tamara became a Girl Scout Leader, serving for 12 years. As her son grew to Scouting age,

The Lorenzo family was honored at the event for their residence being placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In addition to this, Mr. Lorenzo was presented with a special citation by Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino in recognition of

parts of the USA. The Ronald McDonald Houses receive blankets for siblings of young cancer patients from the not-forprofit group Tamara has helmed for 17 years. In the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy and Hurricane Harvey, blankets were also sent to disaster-area shelters.

Currently residing in Massapequa, Tamara’s hope is that cancer will be eradicated in her lifetime and We Care Blankets volunteers will knit and crochet blankets only for healthy newborns departing the hospital.

Tamara has distinguished herself among her peers and has truly earned the title - “Woman of Distinction.”

Book Inspires Artwork An art project at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District started out with a reading assignment, as fourth-grade students made drawings inspired by the Faith Ringgold book, “Tar Beach.”

The story focuses on an

On April 13th, there was a gathering at the Massapequa Library Central Avenue building to honor the Lorenzo family

One day, in a doctor’s office, Tamara met and played with children undergoing cancer treatment.

Extremely touched by these children and their illness, she looked for a way to help them. From deep inside her, came the idea for blankets, thus beginning We Care Blankets. Starting small, Tamara and several volunteer crafters crocheted and delivered blankets to a local hospital.

Word spread and many more crafters volunteered their talents; before long, We Care Blankets was delivering to more than 30 hospitals throughout the Long Island and NYC Metro areas and other

Stepping Up for Autism

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month in April, Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District

The puzzle pieces were returned, along with a small donation, and hung throughout the first floor.

Money will be donated to the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America to support local families.

The puzzle piece represents the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The campaign at Fairfield was coordinated by secondgrade teacher Jennifer Lidonnici, whose family will match the donations raised by the school participated in the Puzzle community.

Sharing Writing Tips Popular children’s author Suzy Kline visited third-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on April 24th to help them become better writers. She is best known for the “Horrible Harry” book series.

Ms. Kline spoke to the

entire grade during an assembly, then conducted in-class workshops.

She shared her own books, as well as those of other authors, to give examples of different writing elements such as setting, plot, character development, and conflict and resolution.

Students were then asked to compose their own stories as she observed and gave pointers. Each child had to envision him or herself as the main character, establish a setting and come up with a plot based upon the character hearing a buzzing noise.

Sharing Talents The imaginations of 20 Massapequa High School art students came to life on paper during the past eight months, and they were recently celebrated for their hard work. The Advanced Placement Studio in Drawing class hosted an exhibition in the upper gymnasium on April 25th and 26th.

Each student had to exhibit two dozen pieces, including 12 related works from his or her selected concentration, and 12 “breath” pieces that showcase technical skills

and knowledge of art using different mediums. Teacher Gail Domingo said that students independently select their projects based upon their interests.

Senior Caitlyn McCreedy’s concentration was lucky charms around the world, and she completed her works in colored pencil. Among her drawings were a Native American holding a dream catcher and a landscape with roses representing Ukraine.

“This class allowed me to branch out of my comfort

zone and I feel that I took my artwork to the next level,” she said. “It was cool to have my classmates and family see my artwork. I felt very accomplished.”

An evening reception was held on April 25 for family members, and the exhibit remained open throughout the school day on April 26 for students and staff to view the artwork. Each display included a biography of the student-artist and information about his or her concentration.

Fossil Study Third-graders envisioned themselves as paleontologists during a recent science activity at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

The students studied dinosaur fossils, then made their

own out of clay.

Magnet and STEAM teacher Joanne Markowski explained to students how paleontologists used fossils to determine what dinosaurs looked like and how they behaved, even though they lived on Earth

millions of years ago.

Children learned about the four types of fossils: cast, mold, trace and true form.

They used plastic dinosaur toys to make impressions in clay and replicate each type of fossil.

safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of unused, unwanted or expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. The event was part of a larger, ongoing nationwide effort to collect unneeded prescription drugs, including controlled substances, for safe and legal disposal.

This initiative addressed a vital, nationwide public safety and public health concern.

More than 2,000 teens - between the ages of 12 to 17 - begin abusing prescription drugs each day (according to a SAMHSA teen survey).

At the same time, drug addiction experts contend that abuse of prescribed or legal narcotics, such as painkillers, are a gateway to illegal street drugs such

as heroin. The rates of prescription drug abuse in the U. S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from homes’ medicine cabinets.

Senator Brooks said, “I wish to thank all those who took pro-active steps to keep us safe from drug use and protect our youth, our community and our environment by disposing of prescription and overthe-counter medications, needles and syringes. By continuously working together we can make major improvements in seemingly insurmountable community problems.”

PAST GRAND KNIGHT RECOGNIZED - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with Massapequa Park Mayor Jeffrey Pravato in recognizing Past Grand Knight Kenn Catalano of Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Island Council No. 6911. Supervisor Saladino proudly presented a citation to Kenn for his many and varied contributions to the organization and the community.

Community Partnership Nassau Community College has partnered with On the Road Again motorcycle driving school to become the only site in Nassau County to offer Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Training and License Waiver courses. NCC — an institution with more than 20,000 full-time, part-time, Workforce Development and continuing education students and a 225-acre campus located in the center of Long Island — takes seriously its role as a community resource, offering not only the best in higher education, but also a venue for much needed community services.

“There was no Motorcycle Safety Foundation Training and License Waiver program in Nassau County for over three years.

The New York State Motorcycle Safety Program, which is administered by the DMV, reached out to me to ask that I open a training site in Nassau County,” said Steve Bertoline, owner of On the Road Again. Bertoline added that he was grateful

to Nassau Community College for allowing this important community service to be sited at its beautiful and conveniently located campus.

On the Road Again is a Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) licensed and MSF certified driving school.

It provides motorcycle driver training exclusively. The company’s services include individual training for novice and experienced riders, a DMV Road Test Service, and courses for experienced riders to hone their skills.

Its primary offering is the MSF Basic RiderCourse, which is a training course that provides a license waiver upon successful completion.

On the Road Again was founded in 1993 with two motorcycles and one instructor. It has since grown to a staff of 20 employees, 30 motorcycles and two locations — its original training site in Suffolk County at Suffolk County Community College, and now the new site in Nassau County at NCC.

The school’s talented staff includes experienced professional motorcyclists from a wide variety of specialties. It trained about 1,000 new and experienced riders in 2017, and with the new location hopes to double that number in 2018.

On the Road Again uses curriculum created by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, which has been in existence since 1974 and is sponsored by major motorcycle manufacturers.

This curriculum is regularly updated and internationally recognized.

To date, 7.5 million riders have been trained using the MSF curriculum.

More than 400,000 students enroll annually at nearly 2,700 sites, with 9,900 certified instructors (“RiderCoaches”) to guide them.

The mission of On the Road Again is to turn out the most educated and skilled riders on the road, thereby improving safety not only for motorcyclists, but also for all road users.
