“Beware of what you’re posting. It will follow you.” That was the guidance from a pair of Nassau County police officers who recently visited Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District to talk about internet and social media safety.

Police Officers Give Internet Safety Tips

Officers Teana Grande and Eugene Messmer, from the Nassau County Police Department’s Community Affairs office, spoke to sixth, seventh and eighth graders during their physical education classes. Topics included digital citizenship, responsible

use of social media, bullying and cyberbullying. They reminded students to be mindful of their digital footprints, noting that their posts and comments today could affect them in the future. Colleges and employers often review a candidate’s social

Dean of Students Kristen Meoli said that the presentation reinforced messages students have heard throughout the school year. In October, sports agent Mark Leinweaver spoke to students during a character matters assembly, and in

March, Berner’s Chiefs Challenge Club organized Character Education Day with guest speakers and classroom activities that focused on acceptance, empathy, kindness and respect.

Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall Of Fame Now Accepting 2024 Music Scholarship Applications

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is now accepting applications for its 2024 Student Scholarship program. The deadline for applications is Friday, May 10th, 2024.

LIMEHOF will award $1,000 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding to eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music or performing arts. · Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in music.

· Financial need.

· U.S. citizen or legal resident with I-55 permanent residency.

About LIMEHOF Founded in 2004, the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical and entertainment heritage is

an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations.

The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music and entertainment in all its forms. In 2022,

LIMEHOF opened its first Hall of Fame building location in Stony Brook, New York. To date, the organization has inducted more than 120 musicians and music industry executives, and offers education programs, scholarships, and awards to Long Island students and educators.

Planting A Seed For Environmental Stewardship

First graders focused on the three R’s of maintaining a healthy planet – reduce, reuse and recycle – as they learned about Earth Day at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

In Dallas Dano’s classes, students make bird feeders out of cardboard tubes on

April 18. They recycled and reused the old toilet paper rolls to do something that would help other animals.

Children first spread sun butter on the tubes, then coated them with seeds. Each student took one home to hang outside.

For another Earth Day project, students painted

coffee filters with blue and green paint to resemble the globe. Each child then added a sentence about one way he or she could help the environment.

“I want them to learn how they can help protect the Earth,” Ms. Dano said.

featured 20 guest speakers representing a wide range of professions.

Over two sessions, each ninth grader was able to hear from eight different speakers. The guests spoke about their career paths, the positive aspects and challenges of their current jobs and what the future holds for their respective fields. The Berner and Massapequa graduates also emphasized the skills needed for success, and how today’s students can begin preparing for careers while still in high school.

“Students learned that it’s not always a straight path from point A to point B,” said School-to-Career

Coordinator Denise DeLury. “A lot of the speakers, when they were in high school, thought they were going to do one thing and ended up in a place they never even thought about.”

Ms. DeLury, who coordinated the program along with Career and Technical Education Supervisor Patricia LiVecchi and business education teacher Christine Poggioli, said what stood out most about the speakers was their passion for their professions. Careers included business and finance, engineering and science, entertainment, hospitality, information

technology, law enforcement, public service, sports marketing and more.

Several of the speakers return year after year to speak to Ames students because they believe in the value of Career Day. Ms. DeLury noted that a few have come as many as 15 of the 17 years the program has been held. There were also a few newcomers this year, including the Class of 2015 valedictorian. The alumni ranged from a 1966 Berner High School graduate to a 2019 Massapequa High School graduate.

Massapequa’s Unqua Writers Toast Their Success

With juice boxes in hand, first graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District toasted to a job well done as they wrapped up a personal narrative writing unit. Students in Cindy McSweeney’s class could now call themselves authors after weeks of hard work.

Apple juice was the drink of choice for a publishing

party, and each student came up to the front of the room to read his or her book. The young authors could write about any topic of personal interest, from a special memory to a treasured possession.

The purpose of a publishing party is to reward students for their commitment to the writing process, from brainstorming topics, to

completing a first draft, to revising and editing. Students commended each other’s work by writing compliments. They also got to share their work with a visiting fifth grade class. Additionally, the project included a technology component. Every student was recorded reading his or her book, and a QR code was added to each cover linking to the video.

Armed Forces Appreciation Day

Celebration May 17th

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that veterans and active United States military personnel are invited to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration slated for Friday, May 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. This free event, open to Town of Oyster Bay veterans and active duty personnel, will include a BBQ and entertainment by the singing group American Bombshells.

“The Town of Oyster Bay

is committed to serving veterans and ensuring they have access to important benefits in which they are entitled to,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This is an important way of thanking our brave hometown heroes for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every day as Americans.”

President Harry S. Truman established Armed Forces Appreciation Day in 1950 as a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. This single holiday provides an opportunity for citizens to come together and thank

our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. The Town’s celebration includes a patriotic musical salute to our hometown heroes, including a special performance by the “American Bombshells,” and a free barbeque. To accommodate as many hometown heroes as possible, veterans and active military personnel are invited to bring one guest. They’ve Got The Scoop

If you want to stay informed, check with the hard-working young reporters of the Lockhart Ledger. The fourth and fifth graders who comprise the staff of the student newspaper at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are looking to keep their classmates in the know.

The Lockhart Ledger is a digital newspaper published a few times throughout the year. Students report on events at school, conduct interviews with teachers and share their thoughts on kidfriendly topics like books, movies, toys and video games.

There is always a lot going on at Lockhart, and the Ledger’s writers love to share this news.

Lucianna Aiello wrote about the Submerge Storytelling event in school and the fifth grade financial literacy trip to Commerce Plaza. Reilly Maher penned stories about “The Little Mermaid” musical production and a pickleball unit in physical education classes.

“I like writing,” fourth grader Mario Magmanelli said. “It helps the students so they know what’s going on.”

The Ledger staff members don’t just write, they also do the

layout and design with Canva. Just like any other newspaper, they make sure to enhance their stories with photos and graphics.

Adviser Emily Bresnihan said that the Lockhart Ledger was around in the 1990s as a print newspaper, and was revived last year as a digital edition. It is sent to parents, teachers and staff, and students can also access it on their Chromebooks.

“The Ledger staff does a great job and they are very committed,” Ms. Bresnihan said. “They learn to be better writers, and learn more about their school and their community.”

$2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/ seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The

scholarship is not for clinical-based study.)

The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee. Filing deadline is June 14, 2024.
