Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket.

These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line.

Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer.

Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.

In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on

It was perhaps the tastiest lesson of the school year for kindergartners at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa

School District. During the last week of March, students made their own pizzas with the help of a local expect.

Dominick Maffei, owner of Leonardo’s Pizza in Massapequa, along with his wife, Linda, visited all three kindergarten

classes for hands-on lessons in pizza-making.

He provided the dough, sauce, cheese and several toppings.

Once the mini pizzas were made, Mr. Maffei brought them to his pizzeria to cook, then returned them to the children for an afternoon treat.

Memories Make For Great Stories First graders are now calling themselves authors at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

The young writers recently completed their personal narrative pieces as part of the Schoolwide writing process.

Students in Doreen Jaeger and Mary Gaynor’s class published non-fiction stories about special and significant moments in

their lives. They learned from mentor texts before generating and selecting ideas, then drafting, editing and revising their works.

They also created colorful covers. To personalize their stories even more, students created self-portraits that were attached to their published pieces.

The children acknowledged each other’s hard work during an author celebration. They rotated

around the room to read their completed stories to classmates. When serving as the listeners, they provided positive feedback.

“This writing unit proved that the students were able to capture a special memory or moment,” Ms. Jaeger said, “and use the writing process and techniques to tell about their personal experiences.”

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization.

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child.

This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins.

BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements.

Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member.

Their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month (unless it’s a Holiday) at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00 a.m.

Fundraiser For Breast Cancer The Massapequa High School girls volleyball team was ranked among the top five teams in the nation for its fundraising efforts through the Dig Pink movement for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Massapequa was

one of 14 schools that raised at least $10,000 for the Side-Out Foundation in 2018, and the top five were named Sports Imports Winners. Funds support stage IV breast cancer research.

The girls

volleyball team has been participating in the Dig Pink movement for 11 years, and in that time has raised more than $114,000.

Massapequa hosts a Dig Pink event each October during a home contest, featuring

junior varsity and varsity matches, a performance by the cheerleaders, a flower ceremony, face painting and numerous raffles.

The Dig Pink event was started by former volleyball coach CarolAnn Habeeb-Kiel and continued

by current coach Kelley Collins. Massapequa will receive Dig Pink net tape, which goes across the top of a volleyball net, as a prize for being one of the top fundraising schools.

“Thank you to all the coaches, players,

parents, staff, students, administration and community members who have continued to support our fundraiser throughout the years here in Massapequa,” Ms. Habeeb-Kiel said.

Exploring Community Helpers Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

To support the social studies curriculum, the

students dressed up as their favorite community helpers on April 12.

Among the careers they chose to represent were

bakers, builders, doctors and nurses, firefighters, police officers, teachers and veterinarians.

Leading up to the day,

kindergartners learned what a community helper is and how they contribute to society. Children read books, did role-playing

activities and wrote “how to” stories. The culminating activity made their learning come alive and gave them a glimpse of possible careers.

A Kids Tale By Kids The tale of an orphan girl named Annie came to Lockhart Elementary School stage for two performances on March 29.

A cast of 70 fourth and fifth grade students starred in “Annie Kids,” adapted from the Tony Award-winning musical and based upon the Little Orphan Annie comic strip.
