I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them.

So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted

nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly.

I was impressed, to say the least.

So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised?

It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”

More than $2,000 was raised for cancer research as 16 teams competed in the Hoops for H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Every Day) basketball tournament at Massapequa High School. The event was coordinated through the collaborative efforts of The Chief’s Challenge Club whose mission is to spread Random Acts of Kindness to others and The C.A.R.E. Club, which spreads knowledge and awareness about cancer to students and the community. All proceeds went to the Jake Brice Memorial Fund and to Brain Cancer Research

in memory of Jake Brice, a member of the class of 2014 who succumbed to the disease this past August.

Special thanks go to girls varsity basketball coach Shari Roessler for helping the clubs organize the event, local businesses that donated gift cards for the raffle baskets and YES Community Counseling Center for making all of the raffle baskets.

Club Advisors Eileen Lind, Joanne Waters and Trish McCarthy called the event a great success and hope to continue the tournament in the future.

Town Supervisor John Venditto recently announced the release of a newly updated and redesigned version of the Town of Oyster Bay website. The new site, www.oysterbaytown.com, is interactive and easily accessible, and contains all information regarding Town news, meetings, activities, programs and upcoming events that residents could be searching for.

Town residents can also follow the Town of Oyster Bay through Supervisor Venditto’s page, on Facebook and Twitter. In addition, the Department of Community and Youth Services, which maintains all Cultural and Performing Arts Programs, senior and youth events, and the Town Animal Shelter, also host Facebook pages, all of which are available through the Town’s website.
