MTAC Recognizes Arlo Drug Store

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) recently acknowledged Arlo Drug Store for its work in the Massapequas’ to prevent substance use. Arlo Drug Store is a pharmacy located in Massapequa Park that has been serving the community since 1955. Working together, MTAC provides Arlo Drug Store with Deterra Kits – a safe medication disposal pouch that can be used at home. Studious Scientists Share Knowledge At Discovery Fair

With lots of questions about the world around them, students from the Massapequa School District went on a quest for answers. They shared their newfound knowledge at the annual Science Discovery Fair on March 18 at Berner Middle School.

The science competition was open to students in grades K-8. There were more than 100 projects by about 170 young scientists, as they could work independently or in a group. Students created

posterboard displays with information about their experiments and their findings.

Each participant received a visit from three judges, which included teachers and students from Massapequa High School’s science research program. At the end of each session – grades K-4 and 5-8 –students and their parents gathered in the auditorium for an awards presentation.

Katie Fernandez, the district’s elementary director of STEM, said the

objective for students was simple – come up with a science experiment and learn something new. There was a big variety of topics covering just about every science discipline, including Earth science, biology, chemistry and physics.

“It was nice to see how many young scientists we have here in Massapequa,” she said. “Their innovation and creativity was inspiring.”

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. To date, the organization has inducted more than 100 musicians and music industry executives, and also o ers education programs and scholarships to Long Island students, sponsors the Long Island Sound Award, and features traveling educational exhibits, including a state-of-the-art mobile museum.

Last year, the organization opened its doors to their new awe-inspiring 8,800 Sq Ft facility in Stony Brook, NY, which features a large exhibition area, theater, performance area and an o cial “Hall of Fame Museum.”

As a non-profit, your admission fee and donations help to support their Education Scholarship program for high school students and their Health and Harmony program, bringing musicians and entertainers to senior centers, hospitals and other places of need.

“For over a decade, the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame has been delighted to distribute tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships, providing support to numerous aspiring professional musicians and music teachers,” said Tom Needham, LIMEHOF Education Committee Chairman.

The Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program, where they will award $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Su olk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music.

Runner Jasmine Parreno Lets Nothing Stand In Her Way

Jasmine Parreno was an avid runner, and it was a huge part of her day-to-day life. Unfortunately, this passion of hers came under fire when she was diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2021.

She battled a serious case of double pneumonia and both her lungs became severely damaged as a result. It was in those moments where she truly questioned if she would ever get the chance to run again. Persistent long haulers proceeded to present its symptoms with acute respiratory failure. Still, slowly but surely, she began to recooperate and has since recovered– despite some mild symptoms.

According to Jasmine, it was time for her to get back on her feet. She decided to challenge herself and hit the pavement once again. She ran her first 5K with OG Training Academy in Lindenhurst.

She hopes that her story would serve as a means to spread motivation and hope to those that are struggling with any illness, whether it be mentally or physically. “Do not let an illness, of any kind, convince you that something is impossible,” Jasmine said. “It doesn’t mean that it will be easy, but definitely worth trying!”

Currently, Jasmine has signed up for her first Sprint Triathalon with New York Triathalon at Rockaway Beach and will continue her running career, letting nothing stand in her way!

Town To Host Special Olympics

Over 500 Athletes To Compete In An Olympic-Style Contest On May 6th

Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will once again host the prestigious Special Olympics Spring Games in partnership with Special Olympics New York. Held at the Farmingdale Athletic Complex on Saturday, May 6th, the games will include a full-day of competitive track and field events for over 500 athletes supported by more than 300 coaches. These athletes - children and adults with intellectual disabilities - have dedicated months to training for an Olympic-style competition that will culminate with the contest during these Spring Games.

“Special Olympics are an opportunity to showcase the hard work, dedication, talents, and

tremendous athletic achievements of athletes, while also paving the way to eliminate social barriers and stereotypes differentlyabled individuals face,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is very proud to be a partner with Special Olympics New York and the Farmingdale School District in making this important event a reality. I hope you’ll join us in witnessing the joy, courage, and determination of these inspirational athletes.”

“Special Olympics New York provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing them a continuing opportunity to

develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, make friends, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families,” Diane Colonna, Vice President, Downstate Operations Special Olympics, New York said. “We are honored that the Farmingdale School District will host our Spring Games and make a difference in the lives of these athletes.”

Drivers are to enter the school’s west driveway from the Merrick Road entrance, drive through, drop off donations, and exit out the back.

Assemblyman Durso is asking community members and organizations to kindly donate new or gently used

sporting equipment to benefit local youth athletes. All items collected will be distributed by Pronto of Long Island, which provides a multitude of services to families in need throughout Long Island.

“If you’re looking to get rid of sports equipment you and your family no longer use, we ask that you donate it to underserved kids who will put it to good use to get in the game,” said Assemblyman Durso. “It’s a home run…you cleared out your garage and played it forward!”

“This drive-thru collection event provides

a win-win opportunity for our residents to clean out their unused equipment and feel like a champion for our young athletes,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Your sporting goods could make all the difference in the life of a young athlete who might not otherwise have the chance to participate in a sport they love.”

“As a father of three boys who all play sports, I know how important it is for children to have the opportunity to participate in our sports programs. Thanks to this program, children and their families in need

The Massapequa School District announces the appointment of Ryan Ruf as the assistant superintendent of business and operations, effective July 1. Mr. Ruf brings extensive experience in financial leadership as well strong knowledge of curriculum and instruction, facilities planning, human resources and technology integration.

For the past eight years, he has worked at Eastern Suffolk BOCES serving as associate superintendent, deputy superintendent and, most recently, as chief operating officer, where he manages an annual budget of $450 million. Among his duties, Mr. Ruf serves as regional support for local school business officials, manages district security measures including leading a security committee, supervises matters related to food service, technology and transportation, and is responsible for the strategic planning process and long-range financial planning.

Before joining BOCES, Mr. Ruf was the assistant superintendent for business in the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District for nine years. He has also served as business administrator in the Sag Harbor School District and assistant to the deputy superintendent for business in

Cold Spring Harbor. His career began as a middle school mathematics teacher in the upstate East Syracuse-Minoa Central School District.

Mr. Ruf holds a bachelor’s degree in science in education and mathematics from SUNY Geneseo, a master’s degree in educational administration from SUNY Oswego and a professional diploma in school business administration from Long Island University, C.W. Post. He belongs to several professional organizations including the New York State Council of School Superintendents and the New York State Association of School Business Officials, of which he is vice president of the Suffolk County chapter.

On coming to Massapequa,

Free Narcan Training

New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso, in partnership with Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Village of Babylon Mayor Mary Adams, and Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, will be holding a free Narcan Training on Thursday, May 4, 2023 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Babylon Village Hall - Board Room, 153 W Main Street, Babylon. A trained specialist from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s office will discuss signs of an opiate overdose, overdose risk factors,

recognizing and responding to an overdose, and the administration of Naloxone (Narcan). Each registered participant will receive a free Narcan kit at the completion of the training.

“We encourage all community members to attend this free, life-saving program,” said Assemblyman Durso. “With record high overdose deaths occurring last year from Fentanyl and other opioids, it’s crucial that everyone knows how to

recognize an overdose and safely administer Narcan. Lives are depending on it.”

“We’ve seen in recent years that Narcan is the quickest way to restore normal breathing and save the life of a person who is overdosing on opioids,” said Babylon Town Councilman Terence McSweeney. “Narcan can be administered by anyone who is properly trained to do so, and with the recent rise in overdoses, it is imperative that we educate the public so we can all aid our first responders in saving lives,” he added.
