information online, with the concept of a newspaper. Of course, Chief staffers talked about their digital presence as well.

The fifth-graders enthusiastically browsed through the newspapers and many found people they knew in the stories and pictures, such as older siblings, cousins and neighbors. They also got to learn more about the different activities, events and programs at their future school.

“It’s a whole new world for them,” said senior Michael Riggi, the editorin-chief. “It’s a preview for high school and they’re so excited because they will get a chance to do all of this in the future.”

The high school students discussed the process of creating a newspaper, from generating story ideas, to interviewing sources, to writing, editing and publishing. They noted the importance of finding

topics that are current and newsworthy. Fifth-graders then got to be the reporters by brainstorming topics and writing articles with the help Chief members.

Michael said that he and his fellow editors were thinking of ways to promote the club, and thought it would be great to visit students in the elementary school, who might not have seen The Chief before.

Adviser Melissa Hornik added that she hopes this will spark interest among the fifth-graders in joining the middle school newspaper, the Berner Beacon, and ultimately continue on to The Chief.

“This club obviously excels,” Ms. Hornik said, noting that the newspaper has earned several awards this year. “It’s nice to have their work recognized, and the elementary students are giving them the recognition they deserve for all of the hard work they put into The Chief.”

Second-graders became the experts on a wide variety of topics, then got to share their knowledge during a Meet the Author celebration at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

As part of their nonfiction writing unit, students in Karen Ellinger’s and Stacy Labriola’s classes created “All About” books.

• Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization.

This can sharpen reasoning skills.

For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air traffic controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions.

• Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on

Baking and Books The Helping Hands Club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus recently visited the Ronald McDonald House. A dozen students baked cookies, cupcakes, muffins and brownies for the residents and took a tour of this wonderful facility.

This was the second time this school year that Helping Hands students visited the facility, which provides a comfortable and

supportive environment for families who have a child undergoing treatment for a serious pediatric illness.

The ninth-graders learned about the valuable services that volunteers provide for the families.

Helping Hands also recently completed a used book drive to support The Book Fairies organization, which collects reading materials for people in need across metropolitan New

York. Books are distributed to schools and shelters to promote a love of reading, foster literacy success and provide an escape from personal struggles. Ames students and staff donated approximately 1,500 books, and the Helping Hands club sorted the books by age level and genre before they were picked up by The Book Fairies.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

Legendary Puerto Rican actress and singer, Rita Moreno, on her decision to not work until Hollywood stopped stereotyping her: “I think it was a very good decision on my part, because the only thing that was being offered, really, were gang movies, and they certainly weren’t as interesting as West Side Story. I think it would have depressed the heck out of me to go back to that stuff. It paid off in the sense that I had peace of mind and I didn’t feel like I was being insulted.”

They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, aside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving.

Last week I featured some boat cleaning tips that I received from Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and this week I would like

to mention an important issue that I learned more about from their President.

This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals.

Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years.

Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!

FUNKY SOCKS FOR AWARENESS - East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District marked World Down Syndrome Awareness Day on March 21 with Rock Your Socks day.

In partnership with Massapequa SEPTA, students and staff wore fun and colorful socks to school. The global awareness day has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012 and is held on the 21st day of the third month to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which cases Down Syndrome. Effects of Snoring Including Alzheimer’s Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age.

The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring.

Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse.

While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea.

Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders.

Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

to Alzheimer’s disease.

Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

If snoring has become problematic, men are

urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

Eager to learn about other cultures, elementary and middle school students from the Massapequa School District took in all that was offered at the annual World Language Festival on March 27.

The 15th annual event was held in the evening at Massapequa High School featuring arts and crafts, entertainment and food. The festival showcased the six languages offered by the district — American Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

High school students from world language classes, clubs and honor societies coordinated the activities and stamped passports for the children as they visited each room.

In the gymnasium, students from the Mandarin Chinese program performed sword and fan dances, while ASL students signed along with different songs including the “Star-Spangled Banner.” An international food court in the cafeteria was a popular spot throughout the night.

As students in

the German program welcomed guests for a cookie decorating activity, they gave each child a nametag with his or her German-translated name.

In the French room, youngsters could make crafts based on the different countries or regions where French is spoken, such as Mardi Gras masks. One of the Spanish rooms had a restaurant theme and another was a game room. Children used their language skills to give and guess clues in Guess Who and figure out where to put their feet in Twister.

The Mandarin Chinese room featured a chopsticks competition and yo-yo dance workshop. Across the hall, students labeled the different regions of Italy on a large map. Another room had activities devoted to

the Mexican celebration of Day of the Dead. Students from the National Art Honor Society did face painting.

Exercise and Aging: Workout Safely After 50 Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement.

But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury.

• Speak with your physician.

The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise.

• Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors.

Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident.

Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path.

• Stay hydrated.

Student-Led STEAM Fourth-graders regularly participate in STEAM challenges in Meredith Marin’s class at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

The activities focus on science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.

In March, Ms. Marin added a new twist.

She asked students to come up with their own STEAM challenges. Each child had to create a concept, determine a materials list and a time limit for building, and define the criteria for success.

On March 22, the class participated in its first student-designed challenge. The class split into four groups, and each team had to build an octopus that could float in water. Materials included toothpicks, straws, Popsicle sticks, tin foil and

brass fasteners. The groups earned more points the longer their octopi floated.

Ms. Marin said that upcoming challenges include building a wigwam, which connects to the

fourth-grade social studies curriculum, and making a miniature basketball hoop and shooting a ball into it, as many students are passionate about sports.

She said that the purpose

of having students create activities was to get them to think outside of the box, and was very impressed with their imaginative ideas.

A SKILL BUILDING INVESTIGATION - Fifth-graders participated in an educational fact-finding mission at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District from March 18-22. Through the Submerge Storytelling program, students studied the fictitious case of a young rocket scientist, Emmy, who was sent to Saturn to find a certain mineral.
