Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are moments that stand out in your mind as if they happened yesterday, so crystal clear do they remain years later. Walking around C.W. Post’s campus several weeks ago, I was reminded of the many afternoons spent sitting out on the lawn with my Philosophy class, reading Leaves Of Grass by Walt Whitman. The lush foliage, the warmth of the sun, the cool spring breeze, the words of Long Island’s very own Whitman… those are images that never fade.

There were the countless afternoons spent walking the “Chipmunk Trail,”

through the Arboretum, savoring the peace and tranquility between classes, hoping to spy some sort of wildlife frolicking between the academic buildings – perhaps a black squirrel rooting through someone’s discarded lunch bag, a sight that was spied on numerous occasions. Then there were the many days relaxing in the Honors Lounge, reading, snacking, socializing and, most importantly, forging friendships that are still going strong, ten years later. Oh, and the classes, of course. Can’t forget those.

All kidding aside, there were many classes over the course of my four years at Post

that left an indelible mark.

I credit my photography class for introducing me to a whole new outlet for artistic expression, back in the days when digital cameras were still fairly new and handdeveloping our own black and white prints in the darkroom had yet to become obsolete.

Years later, I treasure that portfolio of work.

What better scenery to photograph than the vast expanse of the north shore, what better setting to begin to explore adulthood, and Whitman… and what better place to revisit, all these years later, to see if the memories remain as vibrant today. That they do.

success through the arts, showcased artistic talent and work that ranged from dainty watercolor paintings to touching short films to luminous photography.

Children submitted their entries in November, with every one inspired by this year’s national theme, Believe, Dream, Inspire.

Artists from kindergarten

through sixth grade entered the contest, choosing one or more of six categories: photography, visual arts, literature, dance choreography, music composition, and film production. Entries were judged with a rubric that took into account not only artistic talent, but how well they understood the

theme and were able to tie it to their projects through a written statement.

Winners were chosen at the building level by subject matter expert judges so they could move on to the Nassau County level of the event. Birch Lane advanced 23 entries to Nassau County, and two of the 23 – from two Birch Lane sixth graders -- moved on to the New York State level. The winning pieces included a photograph taken by Jaclyn Portogallo and a film production directed and shot by Olivia Walls.

The April 9th event recognized the hard work of Portogallo and Walls as well as all of the other children who participated in the contest. Every child who attended the ceremony, which took place in the Birch Lane general purpose room, received a trophy or medal.

Taste Of Tuckahoe Continued From 10 Tuckahoe continues to be a popular event with area residents and attendance growing each year. Last year’s celebration drew over 450 people, and this year’s turnout is sure to be even larger with the addition of the VIP hour, and Chef Christian Mir, proprietor of Stone Creek Inn, an East End favorite for 17 years. Mir honed his culinary skills in restaurants in both France and the U.S., and his restaurant has been hailed as a “culinary tour de force” by Zagat, and a “sit up and take notice experience” by the New York Times.

As in previous years, all proceeds from the Taste of Tuckahoe will benefit the children of Tuckahoe School, and will be used toward enhancing their education.

Stony Brook University celebrated the opening of its newly renovated Campus Recreation Field Complex with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the southeast corner of the South P parking area of the campus. Stony Brook University students will have primary use of the three competition size turf and grass fields which measure over nine square acres and include lights for evening practice and competition.

Stony Brook University now provides double the amount of recreational field space previously available to students prior to refurbishment. Fields A and B are both fitted with lighting and bleacher and bench seating and fields A, B and C have netting to prevent balls from leaving the fields.

ALS Lesson Learned

Unqua Elementary School students in grades 5 and 6 met former teacher Chris Pendergast on April 2nd as he visited with students to discuss ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. P endergast was diagnosed many years ago with ALS and travels the country to educate students and raise money to find a cure.

College Planning In an effort to increase college readiness, the Guidance Department at the Massapequa High School – Ames Campus took 30 ninth graders to College Awareness Day at Adelphi University.

The group toured the campus, spoke to college students, addressed questions to admissions representatives and even sampled lunch.

The trip gave students the opportunity to see what college life is like, the

majors that are available, and the university’s academic expectations.

The trip was a culmination of the department’s effort to supplement the education students receive about career-planning.

In addition, the entire freshman class will learn about a host of careers from accomplished Massapequa graduates during the 7th Annual Alumni Career Day scheduled for Friday, April COLLEGE PLANNING - Freshman students from the Massapequa High School25th.

year’s run could not have been possible without the support and efforts of the Massapequa teachers, staff, students and community.”

He continued, “An event like this highlights the pride and dedication to an active lifestyle this community is known for.”
