Friendly Competition The fictional-turnedreal game of Quidditch came to Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, as children competed in Harry Potterinspired competitions during their physical education classes.

Students throughout the school were divided into four teams or “houses” based on the

popular series: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. They could earn points in their games of Quidditch, which used scoops, hoops and blue and red balls known as pledgers and quaffles. In between rounds, there were Harry Potter trivia questions.

Easy Being Green Green screen technology is creating new opportunities for students to reflect upon their learning and express themselves creatively at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

Third-graders in Alison Morgan’s class concluded their study of Japan by making short videos about Japanese culture. Fiona Baron, Gianna Bellone and Chloe Cestra focused on Japanese home

life, filming in front of the green screen and then adding photos into the background.

During their weekly visit to the library, fourth-graders created videos based upon the book “The Mysteries of Harris Burdick.” The picture book includes 14 images that each have a title and single-line of text. Working in groups, students had to pick a photo and make up a story.

After recording the stories in front of the green screen,

students edited their videos on Chromebooks using WeVideo with assistance from library media specialist Jacqueline Lee and technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn. In addition to adding their selected photo to the background, students were able to incorporate title slides, music, sound effects and end credits.

The green screen is located in the school’s Makerspace lab, adjacent to the library.

Don’t Forget the Tomatoes I have recently taken to food shopping more frequently, with the intention of picking up “just a few things” during each visit to the grocery store, eliminating the need for a cart and - theoretically - such a large expense in one shot.

The cost, well, it depends on the particular outing and what items are on the menu.

The cart… let’s just say I have yet to master the art of consolidating my purchases to one of those convenient little hand baskets they provide by the front entrance.

Case in point: on my last trip to one of my favorite food stores, I meandered through the aisles selecting a bit of this and that. At about the halfway point, as I was nearing the deli counter, I noticed that my basket was nearly overflowing.

The gentleman taking my cold cut order seemed to note the same fact simultaneously,

remarking, Are you gonna carry all that??

I’m going to try, I replied with a smile, while bracing my basket on the edge of the shelving in front of me.

My order complete, I continued on my way into the next section of the store, surveying the shelves to determine how many more items I could possibly carry.

As I contemplated, I felt a tap on the shoulder. I turned to find a man standing with my cold cuts, those just purchased several steps back, in hand, apparently having fetched them from the floor behind me. Whoops.

On to the produce section, where I attempted to juggle tomatoes while picking out cucumbers. And there they went, rolling down the aisle, nearly taking out a young mother and her child.

Mom, it’s a little red ball!

the girl squealed, taking off after the tomato. Oh my, I’m so sorry! I hurriedly gathered up the rogue produce and headed to checkout, resigned to the fact that I simply could not carry one more thing.

There, I was met with a similarly bewildered look from the cashier, who watched as I piled my merchandise onto the conveyer belt, one item at a time.

Do you have bags? she asked. Why yes, yes I do, three in fact. She chuckled, Three bags and no cart? Yes, I replied sheepishly. Yes, I recognize the irony in that.

After my total was calculated {not quite as inexpensive as planned}, the cashier said Here’s a tip: even if you think you’re only running in for a gallon of milk, take a cart.

Always. Take a cart.

One day, I’ll learn.

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families.

This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area.

In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team.

Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to

Massapequa High School’s new baseball field got its first taste of game action as the Chiefs hosted the Farmingdale Dalers on March 26th in its home opener at the newly renovated complex.

The upgrades were part of athletic field renovations at the high school from a facilities bond approved by the community in 2014, which also included a new track, turf football field and tennis courts.

Improvements to the baseball field included artificial turf replacing a grass and dirt field, as well as new dugouts, bleachers,

announcer booth, sound system, fencing, protective netting and windscreens.

The field will be used by the seven-time Long Island champions, with their most recent title coming last year. Senior Andrew Primm, the Chiefs’ starting catcher, said he and his teammates appreciate the district’s support and will strive to return to the state baseball playoffs.

“We love the new field and it’s really going to help the Massapequa baseball program,” he said. “It shows that they care a lot about us.”

A pregame ceremony to

celebrate the opening of the new field was hosted

by East Lake Elementary School Principal Thomas McKillop and included remarks from Assistant Superintendent Dr. Thomas Fasano, varsity baseball coach Tom Sheedy, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and local youth baseball league officials.

John Piropato, the director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

After the national anthem, it was time to play ball.

Berner Middle School eighth-grader Conor Burns will represent the Massapequa School District in the New York State Geography Bee hosted by the National

Geographic Society. He will travel to Albany for the competition on April 6th.

Conor won the school Geography Bee on January 17th, besting 18 competitors in the

after-school event. His outstanding performance on a subsequent qualifying test earned him a spot in the state competition.

Good Cooking Storytelling came to life for kindergartners at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as they made their own pizzas.

To begin the “How To” unit through Writer’s Workshop, students read “The Pizza That We Made” by Joan Holub, then discussed the steps necessary to create a pizza pie. Dominick Maffei,

from nearby Leonardo’s Pizza, visited each kindergarten class and gave a demonstration. He brought dough, sauce, cheese and toppings so every young chef could make his or her own small pizza, which were then cooked at his restaurant and brought back for an afternoon snack.

Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino announced that she secured $50,000 in funding for YES Community Counseling Center in Massapequa in the 20182019 state budget.

“When someone is struggling, it is so important that they have access to information and services that can help support them in their time of need,” said Pellegrino.

“YES Community Counseling Center reaches out a helping hand to Long Islanders coping with everything from domestic violence to the loss of a loved one. This funding helps ensure that YES can keep doing valuable work to uplift the most vulnerable members of our community.”

YES Community Counseling Center, located on 75 Grand Ave, is a local nonprofit that helps community members in southeastern Nassau County overcome issues that include domestic violence, substance use and addiction, family conflict, domestic violence, sexual abuse, marital/peer

difficulties, suicide and loss, bereavement and other problems. The funding that Pellegrino fought for will help the organization expand services and address their growing demand. YES also provides social work services to Massapequa elementary students through their partnership with the schools. Additionally, the organization continues to work tirelessly to address issues related to the nation’s heroin and opioid epidemic. Building Bridges As part of their study on ancient civilizations, fifth-graders in Allison Martin’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District built suspension bridges.

Students learned about the Inca Empire, in which bridges were an integral part of the 15th-

and 16th-century road system. They followed up the history lesson with a STEAM activity, which focuses on skills in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.

The young engineers brought in recycled materials from home such as cardboard, Popsicle sticks, rope, straws and

aluminum foil, and worked in groups to build suspension bridges. The goal was to design a bridge that could withstand the weight of a full water bottle. By working together and sharing ideas, students came up with creative solutions in designing their bridges.

Ancient Greece was the theme of a breakout activity for sixth-graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. During their social studies classes, students visited the library and had to decipher a series of clues to open up five locks.

The activity was designed by library media specialists Laurie Martucci-Walsh and Julie Rogers using Breakout EDU kits. It served as an introduction to the unit, which is

part of the sixth-grade social studies curriculum that focuses on ancient civilizations.

For one clue, students had to identify a geographical feature to open a word lock, and another had them decoding the Greek alphabet to open a number lock. In a battle of Athens vs. Sparta, they had to find hidden keys around the room. There were also clues relating to Greek architecture and mythology, the latter

requiring students to watch a short video on their Chromebooks. Once all five locks were open, the students were rewarded with a prize: an Easter snack.

Ms. Martucci-Walsh and Ms. Rogers regularly use the Breakout EDU kits to reinforce classroom lessons.

They create the breakout activities based upon the essential questions and main ideas for the particular unit of study.

Communicate & Critique The high school artists shared some of their favorite pieces they created in class this year by making Flipgrid videos. Fourthgraders accessed the videos on their Chromebooks and made their own video replies commenting on the artwork.

Additionally, the Birch Lane students made their own digital art using Pixlr, which they shared with their older peers.

The goal of the project was to encourage active digital citizenship and foster communication through artwork critique.

Technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn facilitated the project along with high school art teacher Julie Thornton, Birch Lane art teacher Melinda Gibbons and fourth-grade teacher Lisa Burke.

Kids Spreading Kindness Spreading kindness has been the mission of firstgrade students all year at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

The children, who call themselves the “Kind Kids Club,” recently began their latest initiative by creating

kindness rocks.

Under the direction of their teachers, children used permanent markers to write positive messages on rocks such as “Kindness is Cool,” “Love Counts” and “Be Friendly.” The children will place the rocks in various places

around Massapequa and hope other people find them in an effort to spread their message. Their goal is to encourage others to perform random acts of kindness, just as they have been doing all year in school.
