Celebrating 50 Years On March 12th, Troop 776 held its annual Green & White Dinner/Court of Honor. This year’s event was extra special as the Troop celebrated its 50th anniversary. Many former Scouts and Scoutmasters shared their memories of a Troop with a rich history that exemplifies the Scout motto oath and law.

Troop 776 is proud of its 81 Eagle Scouts; recently

collected over 500 pounds of food for the Food Pantry at the St. Rose of Lima Outreach Center.

Eerie - the only word to describe that morning.

The morning sun was slowly inching toward the gray sky, revealing a light fog. The mist seemed to grow thicker as the sun crept through its tendrils.

Glancing up and down the block, I crossed the street to wait for my bus to come and whisk me off to the hellhole known as high school. The screen of my phone illuminated the vapor that twirled around me, coiling itself around me like a snake squashing its prey. A twig snapped on the lawn behind me, causing me to spin around, getting whipped by my own cherry hair. Squinting my eyes, I scanned the dying lawn, but saw nothing.

Unable to shake the thought of someone standing in the darkness, watching me, I stepped further into the protection of the towering street lamp. The dusty yellow glow swallowed me willingly as I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. Antsy, I leaned forward, allowing myself to see past all the parked cars to see the yellow lights of the bus working its way toward me. A sense of relief flooded me. Dropping my guard, a loud banging noise sounded behind me, causing me

DUNE STABILIZATION - The Town of Oyster Bay’s Dune Stabilization Day was recently held at Tobay Beach. Since 1989, the Dune Stabilization Project has been an initiative to protect and enhance TOBAY Beach’s environment. It has been an immensely popular volunteer activity for residents of all ages. The dunes in Tobay Beach continue to require ongoing support as environmentally damaging storms, particularly Hurricane Sandy, have had a significant impact upon the dunes. Planting dune grass goes a long way in stabilizing the construction of dunes as it provides a natural buffer against storm surge and high winds.

The eyelids of the being opened, revealing glowing yellow eyes that latched onto mine the second they were scanning the world around them. A faint memory of piercing gold eyes studying me ran through my head at the speed of light so I could not even visualize what the owner of the one-of-a-kind orbs was.

The bus began to roll away, but my eyes were glued to the golden ones hidden in the fog. When we rounded the corner, my contact was broken without my consent. The memory began to play again as I leaned back into my seat. A square jaw.

Heck, I’d eat once an hour if she served me.

But I digress.

Back to the magazine. There are features on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day, tips on eating healthy and

getting in shape for bathing suit season and… well, you’ll have to read it yourself – I only made it past the Table of Contents. Tiny brain = short attention span. All I know is dinner has been exceptionally late these last several weeks as my Human worked tirelessly to finish putting together the editorial content. It had better be good!

And so, once again, I swim in to save the day. Buddy to the rescue! Because, really, who wouldn’t love an endorsement from everyone’s favorite Betta?

Spring has sprung, so why haven’t I? The earth is revitalized.

Everywhere I look, there are buds bursting to show off their finery.

Where is my photosynthesis?

If I get too much sun, I get more wrinkles, burnt skin, cancer.

No raking or thatching will help me...oh no!

The gardeners come and look about.

DESERVING RECIPIENT - In commemoration of Women’s History Month, the Nassau County Legislature held their 18th annual “Women of Distinction” Awards Ceremony on March 21st. Legislator James D. Kennedy chose Robin Hepworth of Massapequa as the recipient of this award for her life-long commitment to her community and county. Ms. Hepworth has volunteered on numerous committees and has raised thousands of dollars for organizations such as Long Island Cares, Island Harvest, and Adopt a Battalion. In addition, Ms. Hepworth is the president and founder of the Massapequa Business Network, promoting local small businesses in the community.

the competition back in September when the club started meeting on Mondays after school.

On Tuesday, March 8th, fourteen students boarded a bus for an eight-hour ride up to Rochester for the state competition in which they competed, in their respective categories against students from all over New York.

Seniors Miranda McLeer, Jennie Toutoulis and Jackie Angelo competed in the sports and entertainment marketing

category and, though they didn’t make it on to nationals in Nashville, still came in 7th place quite the accomplishment considering it was a rather large category that consisted of over 20 other groups.

Back in early March, the Massapequa High School DECA Club attended the state competition.

DECA, which stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America, is an international association of high school students and teachers who have taken interest in or chosen to pursue careers in a wide array of business fields.

For a third straight year, Massapequa dominated the International Business plan category as a group of seniors, Mark Fedoronko, A.J. Mastrobuoni and John Merz, came in 1st place in the category. Their project

consisted of expanding a nutritional supplement product overseas to Finland. They had to write a 30-page paper and do a presentation to a panel of judges at the state competition.

Buckenberger, Fedoronko, Mastrobuoni and Merz will all be moving on to Nashville.

Also going with them will be Justin McGowan,

Kris Kaczorowski and Lincoln Clark. These three students received a direct entry to Nationals, as they wrote a 50 page paper about the Massapequa High School School Store, commonly referred to as the Trading Post. With the help of the advisors and business teachers, Mrs. Denise

“The fact that seven students are attending the National competition this year shows how much hard work and dedication the students have put in and how

much progress the club has made this year,” said one of the club’s advisors, Mr. Edward Aromando.

The International Career Development Conference, commonly referred to as “Nashionals” by the students, (a play on words due to the fact that

it will be held in Nashville TN), will take place from Saturday, April 23rd through Tuesday, April 26th.

For Mark Fedoronko and Justin McGowan, it will be their third consecutive year competing in the National

Competition. For the other five, it will be their first year. Students will leave for Nashville on Friday, April 22nd.

In Nashville, the students will be competing against 18,000 other students from across the country, as well

as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, Canada and China. With this being the first time at Nationals for five out of the seven students, they are definitely looking forward to it.
