M

assapequa Boy Scouts Troop 660 and Cub Scouts Pack 696 joined together to help plant dune grass at Tobay Beach this weekend. In spite of the snow, sleet, rain and freezing temperatures, the scouts made a tremendous effort to rebuild the natural barrier that the dune grass provides. The Dune Grass project helps to maintain the dunes which provide a natural barrier against storm surges and high winds.

Buddy 2.0 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign.

Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat.

Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, flippers “wagging”

expectantly. And then there’s the chewing.

The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious.

Who knew fish had teeth!

Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course.

That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest

prospect of food ends any siesta.

Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond.

Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

The Center is one of 13 honorees to receive the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s ninth annual gala. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County.

Restoring Barriers

Massapequa Boy Scouts Troop 660 and Cub Scouts Pack 696 joined together to help plant dune grass at Tobay Beach this weekend.

In spite of the snow, sleet, rain and freezing temperatures, the scouts made a tremendous effort to rebuild the natural barrier that the dune grass provides.

They worked for several hours and then enjoyed

hot chocolate and delicious clam chowder with Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Veditto, Councilmen Joseph Muscarella and Anthony Macagnone, Town Clerk James Altadonna, and Receiver of Taxes James Stefanich.

The Dune Grass project helps to maintain the dunes which provide a natural barrier against storm surges and high

winds during severe weather. Without dunes, waterfront property is at greater risk. Wildlife, such as shore birds, can lose critical habitat, and the coastline itself can be altered. The grass helps stabilize and enlarge the dunes by catching blowing and drafting sand.

Screening Set On Saturday, May 2nd, the Long Island Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Collaborative of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York, will hold the inaugural Long Island Screening Day for Perinatal M o o d and A n x i e t y Disorders Awareness event.

The goal of the event is to raise awareness of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Free screenings will be held at various public locations where new parents frequent.

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are common health concerns for many expectant or new

mothers. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) can begin anytime up to twelve months after delivery and is the most common complication related to childbearing.

However, the majority who suffer from these medical illnesses go unrecognized and untreated. Women need to know this is treatable and they are not alone.

The month of May is officially Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder Awareness Month in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Within Nassau County there are at least 3,500 families and in Suffolk County at least 4,000 families are affected

by a PMAD each year.

whatever day they want, as many days a week as they want,” said Lori Salmon, manager of ELIH’s Silver Sneakers program. “All it takes is coming to the gym a few days a week to see your function levels increase.”

Andrea Esposito, owner of NOFO Wellness Center in Cutchogue, has offered the program for more than three years. There’s been a recent up tick in beneficiaries interested in the program and she now has 35 members taking advantage, she said, most likely because insurance companies have been notifying plan subscribers about the program.

“I’m glad that people are finally realizing that it is better to keep themselves healthy, because it is so much harder to cure an illness or fix something once it is diagnosed,” Ms. Esposito said. “The hardest part is getting there. Once they are here, we can motivate them.”

Lee Dugan, an instructor with Maximus Health and Fitness in Riverhead, has been teaching classes for the older generation for almost a decade, helping people as young as 65, and as old as 90, remain young.

Participants at the Riverhead gym have the opportunity to take classes designed with a senior’s well-being in mind, using

seated exercises and body resistance that can be adapted for all skill levels.

Sitting in her class on a snowy Thursday afternoon, 85 year-old Mel Rosenberg of Riverhead could be seen lifting weights with confidence.

“I started right after I had a stroke, about seven years ago,” Mr. Rosenberg said.

“Now, you have no idea how much I look forward to coming here. When I wake up in the morning I don’t often feel like doing much of anything, but after coming here I feel like I could do it all.”

“A lot of the exercises we do are basic functions that can help them to weather the storm,” Ms. Esposito said. “They also enjoy the companionship from other members, making it a social experience as well. We also have many couples joining together, as a team.”

Nicole Mohr, a trainer with ELIH, said that some members had never done any of the exercises before, but added that “it is never too late to start.” “We will work with them, and get them feeling confident,” Ms. Mohr said.

“Just like life, we take it one step at a time.”

Frank Barrett, Assistant Principal of the Nassau BOCES Center for Community Adjustment (CCA), was honored by more than 400 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters this month. Mr. Barrett is one of 13 honorees to receive the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala.

The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County.

A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced

by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success.

The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget.

Nassau BOCES, in partnership with Uniondale UFSD and Long Island Philharmonic, have been selected as a winner of the 2015 Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award. This year’s awards focused on partnerships between professional music organizations and public school music programs.

The Performance Partners residency program, established in 2007 and consisting of Nassau BOCES Arts in Education, Long Island Philharmonic and Nassau County school districts, is designed to help students develop a lifelong interest in music and open their minds to the opportunities available to them through music.

These partnerships for orchestra, band and chorus include intense coaching sessions, sectional rehearsals, conductor and dress rehearsals, and a side-by-side concert for the community. The success of the Uniondale partnership is due to the collaborative effort of the partnership’s lead teacher, Orchestra Director Beatrice Flipse, Long Island Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor David Stewart Wiley, Education Coordinator Jane Park and the Arts in Education program at BOCES. The 2015 winners, 38 partnerships around the country, include such prestigious organizations as The Philadelphia Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Opera and the Cleveland

Distinguished Educator Orchestra. The winners will attend the fifth annual Yale Symposium on Music in Schools which facilitates high-level discussions about the importance of music in young people’s lives and gives the winners a chance to strategize and network.

“The partnership has been a wonderful opportunity

said Ms. Flipse. “My students have developed greater musicality, motivation and self-confidence by working with the Long Island Philharmonic. This is an experience which they would not otherwise have been afforded.”

“We initially developed the partnership program with the Philharmonic and currently oversee it, manage the financial aspects of the program, and schedule and participate in planning sessions designed to address student needs,” stated Joanne Spencer, Program Specialist, Nassau BOCES Arts in Education.

During the seven years of this partnership, Uniondale students have also had the opportunity to attend Philharmonic concerts and master classes. Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Wiley has participated in Uniondale’s Grade 5-12 district summer music programs, providing opportunities for students to learn conducting technique, to play music under his baton, to hear about a musician’s life, and to meet and talk to a professional conductor. In addition to mentoring students, Philharmonic coaches provide free lessons, lend instruments, assist with college audition preparation and for Uniondale music students to rehearse side-by- applications, and have been influential in helping side professional musicians and to meet an important Uniondale students obtain auditions with prestigious curriculum goal – advanced level study and performance pre-college music programs and conservatories. of repertoire in preparation for college-level playing,”

Thirteen of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters were honored with the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s ninth annual gala this month. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals and organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County.

A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success.

The annual awards gala is held by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation as a way of celebrating those who have made significant strides in supporting and improving education on Long Island.

The Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget.

“It gives me great pleasure to express my gratitude to our Education Partner honorees,” said Nassau BOCES Board President Eric Schultz. “They are all extraordinary, sharing our commitment to creating safe and caring educational environments where all students can achieve their greatest potential. Alzheimer’s Education On March 26th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) hosted its 11th Annual Education Conference and Expo 2015 “Caring with a New Perspective” to provide attendees with important information about Alzheimer’s disease from discussion panels, breakout sessions, and a keynote discussion that featured restaurateur B. Smith and her husband, radio host Dan Gasby and moderated by Christine Geed, Communications Director, Office of New York State Senator Phil Boyle.

The annual Education Conference & Expo opened up with an

introduction by Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., and a caregiver discussion panel moderated by Ellen Tolle, RN, MPS, Instructor, ADRC. Throughout the day, more than 400 guests received research updates from Dr. Scott Noggle, Director of the New York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory and the NYSCF-Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Eileen Kane-Gemmell, MPA, RDN, CDN, Registered Dietitian/ Nutritionist, Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk, talked about

the nutritional challenges faced by those with Alzheimer’s disease or those who are cognitively impaired.

Robin Marks, Long Island Regional Director, Amber Court Assisted Living, discussed the benefits of the Medicaidfunded assisted living program. Richard Mollot, Executive Director, Long Term Care Community Coalition, explained the laws and regulations that support residentcentered care and how one can care for someone with dementia without drugs.

Members of ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee presented a special session titled “Planning for Long-Term

Care through the Various Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease - Saving the family Home.”

During the keynote discussion, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby shared with the audience the challenges they faced when Ms. Smith was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. They talked about the first time he noticed she had the disease, how it affected their marriage and how they are attempting to get elected officials to provide more federal funding for research, as well as funding for programs and services to help support the many local families who are coping with a diagnosis

of Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition, because of the high incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease in the African-American population, Mr. Gasby stressed the need for more participation in clinical trials.

After the keynote, guests enjoyed more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session featuring motivational speaker Jim Ryan.

The conference was hosted by the Lillian & Mark Lane Alzheimer’s Disease Education Center®.

Awards were presented in five categories: School Board Service, Community Service, Teacher Service, Support Staff Service

and Administrator Service. Honorees in these five categories received a personalized plaque in recognition of their outstanding achievements.

In his welcoming remarks, SCOPE Executive Director George Duffy thanked those in attendance

for serving their communities with such dignity and dedication.

He also thanked them for addressing the challenges that thousands of students face on a daily basis. Susan Schnebel, president of SCOPE’s Board of Directors and superintendent of the Islip School District,

addressed the honorees by telling those assembled: “Those being honored this evening are the cornerstones of our community. They are extremely passionate and proud.”

Mr. Duffy individually acknowledged the honorees in each of the five categories as they

were called on stage to receive their plaques.

Afterward, many honorees commented on how grateful they were to be recognized, as well as how much the recognition had inspired them to continue to strive for excellence each day in their communities.
