--New Alliance Will Expand Patient Access to Cancer Care and Clinical Integration--

Obituary Janice Rice Holdridge, a resident of West Babylon, LI., died March 28, 2021. She was 80 years old. Janice was born in Merrick, LI. To Frank and Ada (Bartow) Rice.

After graduation from high school she attended Ithica College receiving a BS in music education; Queens college where she received her MS and New York University receiving a PHD. She was the District Director of Fine and Performing Arts at Massapequa schools where she taught

for 38 years. She was the leader of a fund raising project aimed at refurbishing the high school auditorium. An accomplished musician Janice was the bassoonist for the Massapequa Symphony Orchestra in addition to the organist and choir director at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Amityville, LI. She also had a brief but successful career in print and commercial work.

Janice leaves behind to mourn her husband Lawrence; her daughter

Laurette Ullian (Tom); her grandson Nicholas, her sister JoAnn Pitelli, and seven nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted at the funeral home

by Deacon Pat Labella.

Interment followed in Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Donations in memory of Janice may be made to the Charity of your choice.

Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, LI.

WWII Veteran Arthur Filete received the Legion of Honor from France on March 30th, 2021

Arthur Filete was born on August 28th, 1926 to an Italian immigrant family in Brooklyn, New York, where he spent the first 7 years of his life before moving to Massapequa on Long Island.

In 1944, he graduated from high school and promptly enlisted in the US Navy before being called to active duty in August of that year.

Mr. Filete had various jobs in the service of his community before being called by the navy: he would help neighbors and drive a taxi, among other tasks.

After military boot camp, he was sent to school to be a diesel mechanic.

Upon graduation, he was assigned to the USS Jacob Jones (DE-130). The USS Jacob Jones, named after a naval hero of the War of 1812, was a destroyer escort

and provided its services against submarine and air attack for Navy vessels and convoys. In the last year of the war, the carrier crossed the Atlantic 20 times, providing protection for merchant and troop convoys in the North Atlantic. Mr. Filete served on two of these crossings that carried troops and war supplies to Europe. On his second Atlantic crossing, Mr. Filete departed from New York to the port of Southampton, England.

By serving on this convoy, he contributed to the Allied buildup effort and the defense of the Allied military, becoming part of the last transatlantic convoy before Germany’s unconditional surrender on May 7th, 1945.

On the return trip to the United States, Germany surrendered, thereby

ending WWII. Aboard the USS Jacob, the crew received orders to join the invasion of mainland Japan, but one day away from Pearl Harbor, President Truman ordered the atomic bombing of mainland Japan. A second atomic bomb resulting in the surrender of Japan, the USS Jones’ task of releasing personnel from the units no longer required a warlevel staff.

However, Mr. Filete did not immediately qualify to be discharged and was sent to the naval supply depot in Guam. There, he spent his last eight months in the US Navy before returning home in time to celebrate USA Memorial Day. We will never forget the bravery of American heroes such as Arthur Filete who is receiving this decoration.

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) is hosting a walk through/ cleanup event of the Massapequa Preserve on Saturday, April 17 at 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

MTAC and its partners including the New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force and the Nassau County Police Department have been walking through the Massapequa Preserve conducting environmental

scans of the area. As a result, the National Guard has found drug paraphernalia located in specific areas of the Preserve known as “hot spots”. MTAC along with its partners will be hosting an event on Saturday, April 17th where we will be walking through these “hot spots” areas to clean up litter and drug paraphernalia. MTAC invites residents to attend the cleanup event to “Keep the Preserve Pristine”

and work together to ensure the Massapequa Preserve continues to be a safe environment for community residents and their families.

Eight Massapequa Athletes Are College Bound

In the third celebration of the school year, eight more student-athletes from Massapequa High School were recognized for their commitment to college teams on March 16. They will play a variety of sports at schools throughout the Northeast.

From the swimming team, Michael Falcone and Noah Hernandez will both attend SUNY Cortland, while Emily Greene will head to California

University of Pennsylvania.

Committing to SUNY New Paltz are Hannah Pugliese for soccer and John Reece for baseball.

Ashley Efstathiou will play soccer at McDaniel College in Maryland, Kayla Hassett will play field hockey and lacrosse at Skidmore College in Saratoga, and Brenna Signorelli will stay on Long Island to play lacrosse for Molloy College.

The students were

joined at the ceremony by their parents, as well as Principal Barbara Lowell and Director of Physical Education, Health, Athletics and Recreation John Piropato, who both offered congratulatory remarks.

“You have a lot to look forward to,” Ms. Lowell told the athletes. “These schools are lucky to have you.”

“Our residents recently received their 2021 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Maier.

“We accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website and brochures.”

Councilwoman Maier noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions

Noelle Stanuch is a Smithtown resident who is fundraising for clean, safe and reliable water in sub-Saharan Africa for the second time through The Water Project, a non-profit organization.

This organization provides reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. For each gift you make to The Water Project, you will eventually receive a report that details the technology used, the location of the effort, the number of people it serves and photographs of the process and completed water project.

“Can you imagine not having access to safe drinking water?

Not having clean water to shower with? Not knowing if the water you cook with will make you ill? I can’t, but I

don’t take what I have for granted,” Noelle said. “There is a real issue in today’s society.

We tend to not think about what we don’t live around or what we don’t see often. There are so many people suffering around the world and we need to help them.”

There is a water crisis affecting women, children, families and farmers. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

“This tax bill reflects the new Nassau County reassessment,” Receiver Pravato explained. “If your School Tax bill increased more than the budgeted increase set, it is due to the effects of the County reassessment. Any questions regarding your property assessment should be directed to the Assessor’s office at 516-571-1500.”

Pravato Reminds Residents Second Half School Taxes Due Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds Town residents that the Second Half of the 2020-2021 School Tax Levy was due on April 1st, but can be paid without penalty through May 10th.

“New York State Law allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40 day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Receiver Pravato explained. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to November 1st for the first half payment and April 1st for the second half payment.

Don’t delay, make your payment before May 10th to ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.”

Receiver Pravato continued, “During this public health crisis, the Tax Office has been fully operational but
