Whether they were watching a canine demonstration or trying on helmets and other tactical gear, students at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District were delighted to meet and learn from police officers during Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on March 11.

Originally scheduled for January but delayed because of a snow day, the annual tradition at Unqua is highly anticipated by both students and the special guests. Police officers from Nassau County, New York City and local village departments came to talk to students and show off their equipment.

Many of the speakers were parents and relatives of Unqua students. They represented a variety of police professions including patrol officers, commanders and specialty areas like the bomb squad,

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985.

“We assist more than 2,500 children and their families

The opioid epidemic has highlighted that all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and all communities can be profoundly vulnerable to addiction. YES Community Counseling Center has been providing both addiction treatment and prevention services for the past three decades with the understanding that the needs of each individual is uniquely different and therefore, treatment must also be individualized and utilize a variety of approaches.

YES Community Counseling Center’s addiction treatment services are comprehensive and approaches are based upon the developmental stage and readiness of each individual. Under the supervision of the agency’s Medical Director, specializes in evidence based services which are available for adolescents, young adults, adults and family members, including: •Adolescent Family Program (AFP) •Young Adult groups •Impaired driver evaluations and treatment •Moral Reconation Therapy for those who are legally involved (MRT) •Recovery groups •Trauma focused therapies •Parent and significant other support groups •Educational groups

It is also understood that most often, family members are deeply affected by addiction and require support and well as an understanding the complexities of the disease and how to support a loved one through their recovery.

Early education about addiction is critical along with early interventions that build individual, family and community protective factors to reduce the likelihood of young people resorting to substances to cope with life’s challenges.

In light of marijuana legalization, it is so important that parents learn the detrimental effects of all substances on the developing brain. In addition to prevention services within the local schools and community, YES CCC offers early intervention

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) is partnering with YES Community Counseling Center (YESCCC) and St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church to provide Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention Education for families and concerned community members on Thursday, March 31tst at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom.

Expanding the awareness and availability of naloxone is a key part of YESCCC and MTAC’s public health response to the opioid epidemic. YESCCC continues to deliver FREE opioid prevention education and naloxone training across the Massapequas including local governments, first responders, schools, organizations, parents, and residents. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that is used to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, namely slowed or stopped breathing. Naloxone is a safe antidote to a suspected overdose and, when given in time, can save a life (Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service).

Residents Invited To Submit Photos For Town Publications Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for future use in Town publications.

“Our residents recently received their 2022 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman

Johnson. “We accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website, social media pages and brochures.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announce that the Town is seeking individuals who are interested in working as lifeguards for local pools and beaches. The Town is accepting applications from qualified, certified individuals interested in lifeguarding positions at Tappen Beach and Pool in Glenwood Landing, as well

as beach facilities in Bayville and Oyster Bay (Centre Island, Ransom, Stehli, and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park), as well as Philip B. Healey Beach in Massapequa, for the upcoming summer season.

“Our lifeguards provide an invaluable service in protecting residents and have helped save countless lives in both pool and ocean waters,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“The Town lifeguarding staff has a tremendous sense of dedication and understanding of integrity, accountability, and the importance of teamwork.”

Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Positions are available at all Town pools and beaches. Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old, possess a current

Lifeguard Certification and a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

Qualified applicants may apply in person at the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Human Resources Office, located in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa.

The South Shore Audubon Society is beginning now to accept applications for a $1000 award, the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship 2022.

College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or

environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy are eligible for the $1,000 scholarship.

Town Of Oyster Bay Seeks Nominations For Women Of Distinction Program Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson, together with Councilwomen Laura Maier and Vicki Walsh, announced that nominations are now being accepted for the Town’s 2022 Women of Distinction Program. At the start of Women’s History Month,

residents are invited to nominate extraordinary women who have made a difference in their communities.

“Each year, the Town has the honor of recognizing women who go above and beyond to improve the lives of those around them through our Women of Distinction Program,” said

Councilwoman Johnson, who serves as Chairwoman of the Women of Distinction Committee. “If you know a special woman who helps make your community a better place to live, we invite you to nominate her to be a 2022 Town of Oyster Bay Woman of Distinction.”

Supervisor Saladino added, “We are proud to

recognize women in our Town and invite residents to submit nominations of those who make a difference and enrich the lives of others. We look forward to sharing their stories and recognizing their efforts to make our community, families and Town a better place to live, work and raise a family.”
