T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck.

Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true.

Below is a story about Patricia, who recently had her wish granted. You could be next!

Patricia Bachmore is a 75 year old resident of Amityville. She wished for new furniture and thanks to the Long Island chapter of this national nonprofit, her wish was granted!

Patricia has fostered and socialized rescue kittens and cats for years. Understandably, that took a toll on her furniture. Although the furniture was old and falling apart, she could not afford to replace it on her own because of her limited income. In December of 2020, The Twilight Wish Foundation granted her with a new sofa and kitchen chairs, which she wished for.

In addition to her work with rescue organizations, Patricia is part of the Amityville neighborhood watch program and also works with the Town

of Babylon’s 311 citizens complaint unit.

She also assists other senior citizens in her mobile home park with grocery shopping and other errands. THANK YOU PATRICIA FOR ALL OF YOUR SELFLESS EFFORTS! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions.

If you are interested in volunteering with their Long Island Chapter, you can fill out the Chapter Volunteer Application at www.twilightwish.org/volunteeropportunities/ and someone will get in contact with you regarding how you can do so. The Long Island chapter operates under the direction of James Ciervo.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently participated in the Special Olympics New York Polar Plunge, held annually at TOBAY Beach to benefit this

great cause. Participants were also supported by Councilman Tom Hand and Councilwoman Laura Maier, who cheered on plungers as they ran into the icy waters at

TOBAY while following an extensive list of COVID safety protocols.

The Supervisor was joined in the effort by Assemblyman Michael Durso.

Labriola Cautions Residents To Be On Lookout For Cold Stun Turtles

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola reminds residents, there is an increased number of sea turtles stranded on north shore beaches due to a condition called cold stunning.

“When water temperatures drop below approximately 50 degrees, sea turtles become lethargic and are unable to swim, as they are basically experiencing hypothermia,” said Councilman Labriola.

“When this occurs, they can float up to the surface

and become vulnerable to boat strikes or wash ashore and become stranded, which can be fatal. If you see a turtle on the shoreline, please do not put it back into the water.

Instead, cover the turtle with seaweed or call the New York Marine Rescue Center.”

The Town of Oyster Bay, in partnership with the New York Marine Rescue Center, recently installed signage at north shore beaches to help educate the public about this condition. The signage

also provides guidelines on what to do and what not to do if you come upon a stranded turtle.

Tips include: • Move the turtle above the high tide line • DO NOT put the turtle back in the water • Cover the turtle with seaweed or dry wrack • Mark the spot with a piece of beach debris or draw an arrow in the sand • Call the NY Marine Rescue Center Hotline at (631) 369-9829.

Neighbor Pets’ Place

Obituary Frank A. Heinrich, a longtime resident of Massapequa, LI., died March 12, 2021 at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. He was 93 years old. Frank was born on July 11, 1927 in Astoria, Queens to Frank J. and Gertrude (Koeppler) Heinrich. He was a proud World War II veteran serving his country with distinction. Frank was employed by G Miltope Corporation in Melville, LI. As an Electronic Engineer.

He was an active member of First

United Methodist Church, Amityville where he served as a reader during worship services. He was energetic and was always willing to assist in any project requiring his expertise.

Frank was predeceased by two spouses, Joan (Brede) Heinrich in January 1987 and Alvina (Gritmon) Heinrich in March 1992.

Survivors include his daughters Bonnie J. Heinrich-Goess (the late John Goess) and Betsy J. Healey (Philip); nine (9) grandchildren and two (2) great grandchildren.

Cremation was private and a private memorial service was conducted at the funeral home by the Reverend Cecile Koppmann of First United Methodist Church.

Interment of Mr. Heinrich’s cremated remains was in LI National Cemetery.

Donations in Frank’s memory may be made to First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 25 Broadway, Amityville, New York 11701. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

Massapequa Coast Little League Donates New Batting Cages for John Burns Park

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently accepted a generous donation of equipment from the Massapequa Coast Little League to help enhance the baseball/softball experience for little leaguers as well as for anyone that ventures into John Burns Park in Massapequa. Massapequa Coast Little League donated two brand new 70 foot batting cages, as well as net replacements for the two existing batting cages within the park.

“John Burns Park is such a beautiful venue and has become a hub for youth sports in the Town, with the ballfields and surrounding equipment getting boundless use by the community. That being said, with significant use by local teams and

park patrons, some of the equipment, specifically the netting for the existing batting cages, has gotten old and worn down over time,” said Supervisor Saladino. “These equipment donations, made possible by the Town’s fantastic working relationship with the Massapequa Coast Little League and its president, Craig Garland, will bring improvements and a much needed facelift to the existing batting cages, as well as the addition of two brand new batting cages, at no cost at all to the Town. On behalf of the Town Board, I thank the Massapequa Coast Little League for their generous donation.”

The new batting cages and nets will be operational for the 2021 season and will be installed near the baseball field at Burns

Park.

The equipment upgrades being made by the Massapequa Cost Little League are as follows: • new 70 foot batting cage to be erected adjacent to the Rookies Field ; • new 70 foot batting cage to be erected adjacent to the west t-ball field; and • purchase and replacing of the batting cage netting on the front turf field and 90 foot baseball field, which will replace the current netting that has deteriorated.

The total cost of the equipment donations to John Burns Park amounts to $10,665, the entirety of which will be covered by the Massapequa Coast Little League.

A Peer-To-Peer Mental Health Lesson Massapequa High School senior Isabella Ritieni recognizes the stress that comes with being a teenager, so recently she connected with students at Berner Middle School to emphasize the importance of mental health and wellness.

For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Isabella created a mental health awareness video for Berner’s seventh graders.

The video was shown during health education classes and focused on strategies to cope with everyday stress and anxiety.

It also emphasized to students that they are not alone in dealing with these issues and provided contact information for local mental health resources.

“I think it came out really great and I think the kids learned a lot,” she said.

Isabella, an aspiring teacher, could not present

to health classes in person due to the pandemic, so she decided to make the six-minute video. She also provided a survey to get feedback from students after they viewed the presentation.

Her project advisor was Adrienne LoPresti, the associate director of the Massapequa-based YES Community Counseling Center. She also worked with high school social worker Joann Waters, district health education coordinator Denise Baldinger and Berner health education teachers Luana Dunn, Kathleen Meehan and Denise Robertson.

Ms. Robertson said all students benefit from peer-to-peer education and Isabella’s video was short but impactful. She noted that after watching the video, many of her seventh graders implemented

some of the stress-release suggestions such as journaling and creating a worry box.

Additionally, Ms. Robertson commended Isabella for recognizing the need to have discussions in school about mental health and finding a way to do a meaningful community service project at a time when opportunities are limited. She said the video will become another resource in the mental health curriculum.

Isabella has been a member of the Girl Scouts since kindergarten. The Gold Award, the highest honor in the scouts, is earned upon successful completion of a community service project.
