Town Of Oyster Bay Seeks Nominations For Women Of Distinction Program

Residents Invited To Identify Extraordinary Women In Our Community During Women’s History Month

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson, together with Councilwomen Laura Maier

and Vicki Walsh, announced that nominations are now being accepted for the Town’s 2024 Women of Distinction Program.

During Women’s History Month, throughout the month of March, residents are invited to nominate extraordinary women who have made a difference in their communities.

“Each year, the Town has the honor of recognizing women who go above and beyond to improve the lives of those around them through our Women of Distinction Program,” said Councilwoman Johnson,

who serves as Chairwoman of the Women of Distinction Committee. “If you know a special woman who helps make your community a better place to live, we invite you to nominate her to be a 2024 Town of Oyster Bay Woman of Distinction.”

Supervisor Saladino added, “We are proud to recognize women in our Town and invite residents to submit nominations of those who make a difference and

enrich the lives of others. We look forward to sharing their stories and recognizing their efforts to make our community, families and Town a better place to live, work and raise a family.”

Women of Distinction will be recognized at a special awards ceremony hosted by the Town Board in May. Nominations may be submitted for any achievement or honorable cause performed by the

nominee. The Town seeks to recognize individuals for their contributions to the arts, education, environment, athletics, community or civic service, volunteerism or business. Honorees must live or work in the Town of Oyster Bay.

Volunteers Wanted For Dune Grass Planting Day

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announce a great environmental volunteer initiative for those who love visiting the beach and helping to protect the shoreline. The Town of Oyster Bay will host its annual ‘Dune Day’

grass planting program to help stabilize the beach dunes, on Saturday, March 23rd at TOBAY Beach. The event begins at 10 a.m.

“The Town’s Dune Stabilization Project brings together residents of all ages in an effort to protect and preserve our beautiful shoreline and

environment by planting stalks of dune grass,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Year after year, this event is a great opportunity for school groups, Boy and Girl Scout troops, and other environmentally-conscious organizations to help protect Mother Earth while having fun!”

Dunes along the south shore continue to face environmentally damaging storms that have a significant impact on the beach. Statistics indicate that the planting of dune grass provides a natural shield that is perfect for

Town Seeks Counselors For Summer Recreation Program

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town is seeking counselors ages 16 and older for the 2024 Summer Recreation Program. The six-week program provides a rewarding employment experience for counselors as they work with children and make a difference.

“This great summer job is ideal for residents age 16 or older who are looking to build their resume,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our summer recreation counselors get real-world experience while having fun, making memories, and making a difference in the lives of others.”

Applicants must be available for the duration of the program, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning July 1st through August 9th. Orientation will

take place the week of June 24th. Summer Recreation Program participants take part in trips, tournaments, shows and athletic events, including the TOBAY Games, making being a counselor a great first job for many residents.

Employment opportunities are offered at Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), PlainviewOld Bethpage and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, Ellsworth W. Allen Town Park in Farmingdale, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, and Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing.

“The Town has positions available for counselors, coordinators, leaders and assistant leaders at all locations, especially at our north shore facilities at Theodore Roosevelt Park and Tappen Beach,” said Councilman Labriola. “Spots fill quickly and we

encourage all interested residents to fill out an application today.”

Black Tea Drinkers

A small study from researchers at University College London found that black tea drinkers had significantly lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol than non-tea drinkers within 50 minutes of experiencing a stress-inducing event. The study also found that black tea drinkers expressed themselves in a more relaxed way than non-tea drinkers within 50 minutes of a stressful experience.

seniors who will be pursuing a degree related to the water utility field. The deadline to apply is April 15, 2024. The scholarships reflect Liberty’s commitment to the community and helping

A trained specialist from the Nassau County Office of Mental Health, Chemical Dependency & Developmental Disabilities Services will discuss signs of an opiate overdose, overdose risk factors, recognizing and responding to an overdose, administration of Naloxone (Narcan), and new treatment approaches. Each registered participant will receive a free Narcan kit at the after the training.

Woman’s Club Of Massapequa Hosts Members Of The Women’s Club Of Farmingdale

Invited guests of honor were President Barbara Horner, along with eleven members of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale. First V.P., Patricia Fernando, distributed beautiful red sequenced heart key chains, which added to the festivities!

Membership Chair, Monica Rea conducted an installation of a new member, Rose Falco, along with her Sponsor Patricia Fernando.

Both clubs exchanged ideas about ways that greatly impact the needs of communities, both near and far.

President Barbara Hoerner described their

participation in projects such as “Operation Smile”, making “beads of courage” for hospitalized children after surgery, and donating to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, to name a few.

Especially notable is the creative way they went about helping the hospitalized children with “cleft palate/cleft lip” (Operation Smile), by devising an arm restraint which helped to benefit children during the healing process!

JoAnn Hundertmark spoke about the Woman’s Club of Massapequa, and how the Child Welfare Department assists those in need. Notable was a major fundraiser held this past December. The proceeds went to help families in need on a temporary basis. The

Child Welfare Department also organizes food drives whereby donations, and monetary gifts, go to help local churches replenish their food pantries!

Sharing our ideas helps us to embrace new ways to serve our communities better.

At the conclusion of the meeting, time was spent mingling and talking.

All enjoyed dessert coffee and tea, served on a festive Valentine-themed table, coordinated by hospitality Chairs Laurie Walegir and JoAnn Bedard.

New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park), in coordination with Long Island Cares, is inviting the community to participate in his annual Pet Food Drive to help families keep their pets out of shelters and remain at home where they belong.

Assemblyman Durso is asking residents, community organizations and pet lovers to kindly donate unopened bags of dog and cat food, canned pet food and pet supplies. All items collected will be donated to Baxter’s

Pet Pantry, operated by Long Island Cares, which provides free pet food and pet supplies to petowning families in need throughout Long Island.
