Massapequa Students Show Their Generosity In Food, Book Drives

Students throughout the Massapequa School District have been involved in numerous acts of kindness recently. While the holidays are typically known as the “season of giving,” the charitable acts have continued at a strong pace into the new year.

Berner Middle School’s Chiefs Challenge club held its annual Souper Bowl fundraiser in the two weeks leading up to the big game. There were two large boxes in the lobby representing the Kansas City Chiefs and

the Philadelphia Eagles, and students and staff could place nonperishable food donations in the box of the team they expected to win. Not surprisingly in a community that’s also home to the Chiefs, the box for Kansas City had the most food. Donations were given to Island Harvest.

Members of Chiefs Challenge, advised by Caroline Glynn and Juliette Happe, decorated the two boxes and made posters to hang around the school to promote the drive. They

also provided facts about hunger on Long Island for the daily announcements.

Seventh grader Ty Miranda said that large amount of donations shows how caring everyone is at Berner. He enjoys helping out the community by working on charitable drives throughout the year.

“We just need to give back and make sure everyone has something to eat,” he said.

Added seventh grader Meaghan O’Brien, “We’re a town that comes together

to help people out.”

McKenna Elementary School also had a successful Souper Bowl fundraiser. The drive was spearheaded by the Ambassadors Club, led by teacher Lauren Annarumma. Students and staff donated 1,017 cans of food, exceeding last year’s total by nearly 100. Donations were given to the parish outreach center at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa Park.

“I’m very proud, because everyone contributed and

people who don’t have enough money can have food now,” fifth grade Sabrina DeVito said.

At Lockhart Elementary School, the student council’s breakfast food drive, ran through Feb. 17. It coincided with Valentine’s Day so students and staff could “share the love” by donating cereal, fruit cups, oatmeal and more for the food pantry at St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa. The student council is advised by Diane Bacheller.

Birch Lane Elementary School’s student council, under the direction of Kelsey Downey and Casey Russell, hosted its second annual drive for the Book Fairies. Students could donate new and gently used books for the nonprofit organization, which distributes the books to under-resourced communities on Long Island and in New York City. Ms. Downey said the goal is to exceed last year’s total of 1,974 books.

The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source

Do you know who cleans and maintains many Long Island Courts?

A major vocation for people with disabilities is cleaning, maintenance, janitorial, landscaping and snow removal work. The Corporate Source (TCS) is a Garden City-based non profit organization, which has vendor contract relationships to provide cleaning and maintenance for many of Long Island’s courthouse facilities.

As one example, the Su olk County Court Complex in Central Islip averages visits from more than 1000 people a day, whether it is judges, employees, lawyers, plainti s or defendants. Many of these visitors would not know that this 28 acre campus is cleaned and maintained in large measure by people with disabilities from The Corporate Source. In recognized annual surveys these workers are ranked “well into the ninety percentile”, performing above industry standard.

As a logical progression, in 2000 as construction and development of the D’Amato Federal Court House was completed, the Federal government awarded a janitorial contract to The Corporate Source. By 2003, they were so confident in the work of The Corporate Source that the contract evolved into Total Facilities Management including maintenance, landscaping and snow removal. More than 30 TCS employees work alongside a variety of federal employees, including 16 federal judges. Judges have been so impressed by their work that they held a lunch for these employees to express their appreciation for their commitment and outstanding performance. Michael Kramer, CEO of The Corporate Source, said “Our workers earned credibility for this enlarged opportunity. They proved that they could deliver when given a chance to do a job.”

Mr. Kramer mentioned that often cleaning, maintenance and janitorial tasks are perceived as “jobs of last resort” marked by high turnover and

a casual attitude. In contrast he said, “The workers provided by The Corporate Source are motivated when they are given these jobs. Sometimes this is their first position so they have a desire to prove what they can do. Among the 60+ TCS employees at the court complexes in Su olk, some have been employed since TCS first got the contract more than 20 years ago. The retention rate is well above the industry average and many employees are working there multiple years.”

TCS employees appreciate the stability that comes from work. Matt is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at the D’Amato Federal Courthouse and over the past 23 years has worked his way up through the ranks of Janitor, to Project Worker and after taking additional training at BOCES, moved into his current role as a Mechanic. Matt is thankful for the support of his managers and supervisors who motivated and encouraged him to learn new skills and expand his role. He is grateful that work has given him the ability to provide for his wife and young children.

Richard, a TCS employee since 2017, reentered the workforce as a Janitor in the Su olk County Courthouse. Work not only helps him pay his bills and save for a new car, but also gives him a sense of pride and community. Richard is glad to complete his routine tasks and jump in when additional help is needed. “The people here are the best part of my job” said Richard. “Everyone is nice and I was really glad I got this opportunity to work for TCS.” His manager regularly hears compliments about his work and positive attitude.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Commissioner of Public Safety Justin McCaffrey honored Public Safety Officer Tyler Kelly, of Massapequa, as the Town’s “Employee of the Month” for February. Tyler has a great attitude and his extraordinary efforts ensure that operations in the Department of Public Safety are professionally handled, which was

perhaps best illustrated by his recent swift action while on patrol in North Massapequa.

Officer Kelly noticed a girl walking along North Broadway with no shoes and who appeared lost. He instinctively sensed something was wrong and contacted the Nassau County Police Department while remaining in sight of the girl until police responded. After

being checked by police department medics, the girl was determined to be developmentally disabled and was returned safely to her home. Public Safety Officer Kelly’s observance and attention to detail helped mitigate a potentially dangerous situation, and Supervisor Saladino thanked him for always going above and beyond his duties to help keep our community safe.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE RESOURCE CENTER 2023 Memory Walk And Spring Festival

The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center (ADRC) will host its Annual Memory Walk and Spring Festival at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, 451 Unqua Road, Massapequa, NY on Saturday, April 22, 2023. The walk will begin with registration at 8:30 am, a light breakfast, and opening ceremony. The Memory Walk and Spring Festival is being held on Earth Day and will have activities celebrating the planet as well as a Memory Tree to honor loved ones, archery activities, music, photos, food, beverages and more! In addition, many other community organizations are joining us and will be sharing resources with participants. This is an event you do not want to miss.

Each year, the Memory Walk serves to raise awareness about

Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia, honor and remember those impacted by the disease, and raise funds for ADRC to continue to provide support and services to families on Long Island. All funds raised stay on Long Island and are put right back into serving local families impacted by the disease.

It is $25 per person to participate and Children 12 and under are FREE. Consider creating a Team and having friends and colleagues join you in raising funds and awareness. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has kicked off its virtual fundraising hay drive. The threemonth campaign is intended to help Pal-OMine raise funds to pay for the hay needed to feed its herd and help offset the rising costs of hay.

To grow hay, hundred of acres of land is required in addition to extensive physical labor and expensive equipment to deliver hay from the farmer to PalO-Mine’s herd. Here are some details associated with the cost factors:

-One bale of hay weighs 50-70 lbs.

-One bale of excellent quality hay costs approximately $14; an increase of 40% from last year.

-Pal-O-Mines herd eats 18 bales (1,000 lbs.) of hay daily

-Pal-O-Mine receives a delivery of 810 bales of hay every six weeks at a

cost of $6,600 at a cost of approximately $57,200 annually.

Through the virtual fundraising hay drive, Pal-O-Mine’s goal is to raise $12,000.

Massapequa Vocalists Named To Regional Ensemble

The Massapequa School District is proud to announce that two music students will perform at the 2023 Eastern Division Honors Festival in Rochester, N.Y. from April 13-16. Massapequa

High School senior

Arianna Surrow and junior Cooper Arbisi, both chorus students, were selected for this prestigious honor.

The event is sponsored by the National Association for Music Education and hosted by the New York State School Music Association. Arianna and Cooper will be among the more than 200 students selected from school music programs across the state. Approximately 700 students will participate from schools across the east coast.

Students will rehearse and perform with renowned conductors.

Arianna and Cooper were selected for the All-Eastern Mixed Chorus, which will be led by Jason Max Ferdinand. They will also get to take part in a variety

of music workshops.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Arianna and Cooper, two incredibly talented singers,’’ said Vincent Greene, Massapequa’s director of fine and performing

arts. “They will work collaboratively with other young musicians from schools outside of New York and gain valuable experience by working with notable master conductors.”

- Massapequa High School chorus students Cooper Arbisi and Arianna Surrow were selected for the All-Eastern Mixed Chorus and will travel to Rochester, N.Y. in April.

Co-Ed Fitness Classes 2023 Registration Begins March 7th For April Programs

Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that residents who are interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness will be able to register for the Town’s popular Co-Ed Fitness Classes at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Classes run for 10 weeks and are offered to individuals 18 years of age

or older.

“The Town’s spring co-ed recreational programs have consistently proven to be one of the most popular programs the Town offers each year, as they provide a terrific outlet for our residents to exercise and stay in shape,” said Councilwoman Maier. “The Town’s Parks Department has done an amazing job offering

Free Musical Performances At Local Libraries Enjoy The Sounds Of The Beatles, Music Of The 50’S & 60’S And

Oyster Bay Town

Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced that the Distinguished Artists Concert Series will continue through May 2023 with free performances at local libraries throughout the Town.

“The Distinguished Artists Concert Series provides free musical and dance programs for the enjoyment of our residents,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “I

encourage residents to take advantage of these wonderful performances offered by the Town for free at local libraries.”

Scheduled performances for February and March include:

Art Lillard’s Heavenly Big Band on Sunday, February 26, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Bethpage Public Library – A program of danceable swing, Latin and American standards with a big band sound, including

vocalists.

Penny Lane on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Jericho Public Library – Performing the music of The Beatles. All welcome/free tickets required, tickets available at library on February 1st. For more information call Jericho Public Library (516) 935-6790.
