Broken Lines By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Used to be, if you wanted to get in touch with someone, you picked up the phone and called.

If you couldn’t reach them immediately, you left a message – either on an answering machine or with another person associated with them – and then waited patiently for a return call. Tedious, right?

So why is it that, these days, with every gadget and method of communicating imaginable, it seems more difficult than ever to actually, you know, communicate?

Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes.

It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant influx of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications

and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on.

Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately.

Daniel Flinn, SN, of Massapequa, became commander of the United States Power Squadrons, District 3 (Long Island) at the Melville Marriott on March 15th. Dan called his watch and the 16 local squadron commanders within D3 “Dan’s Navigators.”

Daniel has achieved the grade of Senior Navigator, the highest squadron grade possible, indicating that he has successfully passed all available advanced grade and elective courses covering every aspect of navigation and seamanship.

His goal during his year as D3 Commander was to have others following his path, and also focus on increasing public service efforts and improving the diversity of squadron events.

Artwork On Display

Massapequa’s Bar Harbor Library is featuring artwork from Grace Episcopal Day School Students K-8 this month.

The February art show is located in the main display case, opposite the main front desk, for all visitors

to see. Cathy Clauss, the art teacher at Grace, chose pieces that represent the wide variety of media and artistic styles that Grace students work with throughout the year. As always, she encourages the students to add a touch of

their own creative style to their work.

The student collection of watercolor and multimedia paintings, clay and colored paper designs will be on display through the entire month of February.

PAINTING THE TOWN BLUE - Congressman Pete King commended Mark Marrazzo, owner, and Gloria Fenaroli, founder, of Bayview Florist & Montage in Massapequa Park on their “Let’s Paint This Town Blue” campaign, which was organized to mobilize community support for the brave men and women of our Police Departments. The florist is offering blue ribbons to its customers to display in front of their homes to demonstrate that they stand with the police against the charges made against them. Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn To Skate” this spring by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage.

Throughout the year, the ice skating center offers skating class for residents interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their skating abilities.

Registration for Series 4 (March 7th through May 1st) will begin on February 21st. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone 516.797.4126.

The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels.

I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting.

Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers.

On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension.

There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture.

This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it.

We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

High school seniors looking to pursue an education in the performing, visual, or literary arts will be pleased to learn that the Annual Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Scholarship Competition is approaching. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that registration for the Annual Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Scholarship Competition is currently underway.

The Arts Council Scholarship Competition encourages high school seniors to submit work in categories such as music, dance, visual arts and literary arts for the chance to be awarded a scholarship.

The Arts Council’s Annual Scholarship Competition is open solely to all high school seniors who reside in or attend school in the Town of Oyster Bay. The event represents an opportunity to celebrate inspiring works in vocal

music, instrumental music, dance, film, and literature. The Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council will present scholarships to the winning 2015 Artists for creating such beautiful and stunning works of performing, visual and literary arts.

Applicants for the Scholarship Competition must submit two reference letters from a teacher or professional in the student’s preferred category in addition to a typed letter (four copies) detailing the participant’s career goals. There is a $25 processing fee for each category. Payment will be accepted as a check or money order only, no cash will be accepted.

PAJAMA PROGRAM - McKenna Junior Girl Scout Troop 2161 organized a Pajama Program Organization, www.pajamaprogram.org, PJ and Book drive for the month of January. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) announced the 28th Anniversary Angel Ball Honoree Humanitarian Award is Tara E. Conner, former Miss USA. Tara Conner is a Television Personality and Recovery Advocate.

Through her work, she shares her experience, strength and hope with audiences throughout the United States. Conner was crowned Miss USA in 2006. During December of that year, she entered the Caron Treatment Center and completed 30 days of treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. She has since celebrated 8 years of sobriety.

Tara hopes to raise awareness that addiction is a disease and that many people go on to lead a healthy, productive life in recovery. She especially wants educators, families and professionals to know that sobriety at an early age is achievable and that it greatly enhances life’s possibilities. Miss Conner states, “It’s so important to understand that addiction is a family disease,” said Conner. “I experienced this firsthand within my own family.

But I’ve also learned that through treatment and recovery you can break the cycle.”

LICADD is working feverishly to put a stop to

the increase in addiction and the tragedies that result from it. Children and families are being devastated and LICADD offers a solution with preventive education and support services to help break the cycle.

LICADD’s Co-Chair of the Angel Ball is Jay Matuk, Board Member and Principal at Cold Spring Harbor Junior/ Senior High School.

Jay has spent over three decades working in our public schools as both a teacher and building leader. For the last nine years he has served as the Principal of the nationally ranked Cold Spring Harbor Junior/ Senior High School in Suffolk County. Mr. Matuk has presented at several statewide and national educational annual conventions and has facilitated workshops for Hofstra University and Queens College. Mr. Matuk is also an adjunct professor at the C.W. Post Graduate School of Education.

LICADD will mark 59 years of service to the Long Island community with another spectacular gala at the Garden City Hotel featuring the sensational sound of the Joel Sikowitz Swing Orchestra. The event preparations begin on March 3rd, 2015 at the Angel Ball Kick-

by Rev. Philip Eichner, S.M. For twenty-eight years, this annual event has brought together parents, educators and leaders in government, law enforcement, and the treatment field in support of LICADD’s programs.

LICADD’s Angel Ball is one of the nonprofit organization’s key fundraising events and organizers hope to raise more than $260,000 through sponsorships, ticket sales and onsite auctions/raffles. Tickets to this year’s Angel Ball are $500 and are available online or via phone at 516.747.2606.

With offices in Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents and advocates public policy.

This summer, Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), Long Island’s top-ranked arts school invites students to learn from the masters in a variety of disciplines.

The LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers young artists (entering grades 6-12 in the fall) a hands-on learning experience with professional artists who will help them to develop their skills.

Beginnerthrough advanced-level classes and workshops are conducted in a custom-designed, airconditioned arts complex that boasts professional

dance studios, state-ofthe-art digital media and music/audio production labs, art studios, practice rooms and a fully-equipped professional theatre.

Daily courses are available in drama, musical theatre, creative writing, dance, music and visual arts. Attendees work with ensembles, enjoy performances from guest artists and take cultural field trips to museums and Broadway shows.

The academy concludes with performances by all students in each arts discipline.

This four-week academy

runs June 29th-July 24th, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Enrollment into the academy requires an individual school district recommendation. Accepted students are placed in classes based on age and level of achievement.

In 2011, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) unveiled a historic educational initiative called the FASNY Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York.

FASNY announced a deadline extension - to February 20th - for firefighters to apply for the new 2015 semester.

“FASNY HELP has been a tremendous success and a vital initiative for fire departments to boost their recruiting of the next generation of firefighters,” said FASNY President Robert McConville.

“HELP funding comes from our federal SAFER grant, which has driven recruitment initiatives throughout the state.

Under FASNY HELP, an individual who hasn’t already achieved a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP studentvolunteer firefighter can pursue either on a fulltime or part-time basis.

Starting with the Fall 2013 semester, FASNY HELP was expanded to cover online courses taken through Empire State College.

FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the fall and spring semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they

complete their course of study. They must attend the closest community college or one within a 50-mile radius of their residence. Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ options.

Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community.

The deadline to apply for tuition reimbursement for the new semester has been extended to February 20th.
