LONG ISLAND PET EXPO MARCH 3 & 4, 2018

Thinking Like Olympians To gear up for the winter Olympics, students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District imagined themselves as athletes.

Children made their own Olympic selfies in a project that combined literacy and technology skills.

After using their Chromebooks to learn more about the games,

such as reading about why Pyongyang, South Korea was chosen as the host city, they selected an Olympic sport to further research. Each student envisioned him or herself as an athlete in that sport and wrote a passage about it. Information included a history of the sport, noted athletes and fun facts.

Students used their

Chromebook webcams to snap headshots and add their faces to caricatures of winter-sport athletes.

With the help of computer teacher assistant Donna Meyer, they completed their projects using Google Slides in the computer lab. The stories were printed out and displayed throughout the school.

Wind Study Kindergartners in the Massapequa School District learn about the weather as part of the science curriculum, and youngsters at East Lake Elementary School recently explored wind.

Magnet and STEAM teacher Lisa Gennardo led students in an activity in which they could discover the effects of the wind on

different objects. She set up a fan in her classroom and had children place different items in front including a ball, a plastic cup, feathers, a balloon, a rubber duck and a book. The children made predictions for each object on whether they thought the fan would blow it away.

They watched as a book that was standing up was

blown over, but didn’t move at all when laid down flat.

As a follow-up activity, the students had to make a shield to protect a plastic cup from the wind, using a plate, Popsicle sticks, tape and pipe cleaners, while following the engineering design process.

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem.

In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic.

This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. On Febraury 18th, Hope Children’s Fund will host its first Gala at East Wind in Wading River! All are welcome to attend and enjoy a night out to support this charity and its cause. The Gala will include dinner, a unique art auction, music by the band X-Sessions and a possible Skype call with the children at their orphanage in Meru. Centro Cultural Hispano ~ Oyster Bay www.cchoben.org This non-profit works towards the educational, social and economic development of the Hispanic community of Oyster Bay, East Norwich and surrounding areas. They are seeking volunteers to help students at their after-school program from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Oyster Bay. For most of these students, English is not the first language spoken at home and, as a result, their parents do not understand English sufficiently enough to help them with their schoolwork. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will participate in Long Island Cares’ 7th annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge. The drive will take place during the months of February and March and focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable

to hunger, residents’ pets.

Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry Pets in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members.

The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet

Cracking the Classics “Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself; or, like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.” ~ Gustave Flaubert Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department.

This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus.

Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into.

Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple.

Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized.

This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched.

Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along.

Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem.

Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done.

Priorities, indeed.

As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise.

One book per week or so.

Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening.

Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

Registration Upcoming Residents looking for a fun activity to keep themselves fit and active during the colder months are invited to register for the Town of Oyster Bay’s Pilates class, a 10-week program beginning on Saturday March 3rd. The weekly sessions will be held Saturdays thereafter from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., according to Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. The Town’s Pilates program is for individuals 18 years of age or older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room located at Bethpage Community Park.

“Pilates is a mind-body intervention that focuses on strength, core stability, flexibility, muscle control, posture and breathing,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “It is also a low impact workout that is easy on your joints. If you haven’t tried this unique

form of exercise, this Town program may just be the perfect opportunity to experience its many benefits.”

Registration for the Pilates class will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage) on Saturday, February 3rd from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Monday, February 5th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, February 7th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The fee for the program is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Town of Oyster Bay. Proof of residency is required and availability is limited. Town residents will be given first preference. If a session is cancelled due to inclement weather, make up days will be attempted.

gives them an outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “It is always recommended that participants check with a physician before participating in any physical fitness program.”

The class is designed for beginners and intermediates. Participants are asked to bring their own ½ inch to 1 inch thick mats, as Pilates equipment will not be provided.

On January 25th, 2018, both the Office of the New York State Comptroller and Moody’s Investors Service reported a strong financial outlook for Massapequa Public Schools.

The OSC released its annual Fiscal Stress Monitoring report, and for the three years measured, the district received a perfect score on all indicators. The system has two main components: financial and environmental. According to the comptroller’s office, fiscal indicators measure key drivers of fiscal stress such as year-end fund balances, operating deficits/surpluses, cash position and reliance on short-term cash flow debt.

Environmental indicators within the district’s control include budget vote approval rate, teacher turnover rate, and class size.

Massapequa Public Schools is one of only three districts on Long Island to receive a perfect score in all areas.
