separate workshops are held for both children and adults, the Town will once again be offering special ‘Children and Caregiver’ workshops so that they can be enjoyed together.”

Workshops for adults include origami, water coloring, oil & acrylic painting, drawing fundamentals, Zumba fitness and beyond.

Highlights for children workshops include fun activities like juggling (Grades 2 & up), filmmaking (Grades 3-6), guitar lessons (Grades 3-5), Chess (Grades 2-6), and much more.

This spring the Workshop Enrichment Program is extending workshops to middle school students (Grades 7-9). Activities for middle school workshops include learning how to direct their own short film in the Art of Filmmaking (Grades 7-8) or learning the basics

of music technology to become the life of the party in the DJ Academy (Grades 7-9).

“These workshops represent an opportunity for residents, both young and old, to hone a new skill, while simultaneously having fun,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “ These workshops are not only a chance to broaden one’s horizons, but also an avenue through which both young and old can develop a new talent or sharpen a pre-existing skill.”

“Last year, Town residents, with the assistance of the CSEA, donated more than 2,000 pounds of much-needed supplies,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “This year, with residents’ support, we hope to surpass that amount.”

Art is a powerful medium of expression. Particularly for the aging, it can present an opportunity to open up to outsiders what may be a lifetime of inspirational images never before shared. Thirteen artists who happen to be residents of New York State skilled nursing and assisted living facilities translated visions from their hearts and minds into winning entries of a juried art contest, now featured in a 2014 calendar, “Art from the Heart.”

The annual calendar is the result of an art contest launched in 2004 by the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc., the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL).

Residents of approximately 280 NYSHFA/NYSCAL member skilled nursing and assisted living facilities

around the state were invited to submit artwork.

Proceeds from the calendar will help improve the quality of life for long term care residents at facilities across New York.

Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 50 pieces submitted from across New York state. The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany.

Ranging in age from 52 to 93, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered

their talents after moving into a long term care facility where they began taking art classes.

“Our residents have shared such rich stories through their artwork,” said Richard S. Patterson, Jr., executive director of the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. “The ‘Art from the Heart’ calendar provides a forum for these talented and interesting individuals to shine.”

states of sleep, tossing and turning from one bizarre dream to the next, vaguely aware of the people and places surrounding me, but rarely discerning any viable plot from the whole scenario. After the loss of someone very close, those around us are caring and concerned, making every effort to shield us from the hurt, and try to lessen our heartbreak.

But at times, it just takes a quiet moment with a special someone or discovering something, anything, offering comfort or some relief from the grief, loneliness and unbearable ache.

The “something” could be as simple as the warmth of an old, somewhat worn and familiar cup filled with hot and inviting morning coffee.

It appears as though each sip relieves some of the pain, even sharing the anguish while stirring emotions which, not surprisingly, leave you feeling a little drained and empty.

Adding a bit of sugar is a little reminder to reflect on those sweet times you shared in your life together, understanding that right now nothing seems quite right, nor appears to make any sense.

As you stir your coffee, inhale the aroma and savor your memories, knowing the cup will soon be empty; and although there will always be an empty place in your heart, the images of the life you shared will gradually replace the sorrow.

Listen to a sort of musical reminder as the spoon circles and brushes against the sides of the cup, and you will never forget that you will always cherish and embrace your old memories, while knowing the cup may empty today, but will fill with new memories each tomorrow.

For now, just wake each morning with the thought “good morning sweetheart….let’s have a nice cup of coffee.”

( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports.

The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million

free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added.

Exam Excellence

Success adds up for 12 eighth-grade students from Alfred G. Berner Middle School. They achieved the highest marks on the 2013 American Mathematics Contest 8 exam out of 243 students tested in their grade.

Their marks ranged from 13 to 16 out of a possible 25; the national average is a score of 10. Deborah Lobaccaro received a 16, the highest score, followed

by James Kiernan, Ryann Regan, Jake Bresnihan, and Kayla Collins who all scored a 14. Seven more students scored a 13, including Victoria Bal, Kevin Voigt,

Talia Nieto, Connor Curley, Michael Venezia, Matthew Schector and Kaitlin McWilliams.

“We are extremely proud of the mathematical abilities of these students,” said Principal Jason Esposito.

“Their scores are a testament to the quality of the math program and staff we have here at Berner.”

The exam, one of many sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America, is nationally recognized as a highly respected school-based competition. It consists of 25 multiple-choice questions on middle school

mathematics.

Questions are developed through the collaboration of teachers, mathematicians and professional organizations to provide challenging math problems that align with curriculum standards.

According to the MMA, many colleges and universities request scores from these contests at the higher grade levels and use them for recruiting and admissions.

Each high-scoring student will receive a certificate as well as a pin of recognition from the MMA for their achievement.

If you ask Alfred G. Berner Middle School eighth-grader Liam Higgins where Yakutsk is, chances are he’ll know the answer: a remote corner of Siberia and one of the coldest places on Earth.

Liam was crowned the winner in the school-wide round of the National Geographic Geography Bee, allowing him the opportunity to qualify for the state level and advance to the national level.

Eighth-grader Stephen Roach was the runner up. Twelve other students competed including,

eighth-graders Kevin Voigt, James Oates, Deborah Labaccaro, Thomas Beck and Aiden Dooher; and seventhgraders Andrew O’Brien, Derek Haag, Brendan Castonguay, Tiffany Wong, Christopher Muscarnera, Samantha Carroll and Robert Hoffman.

All seventh- and eighthgrade students took a qualifying assessment to determine a winner for each team. These winners then participated in the school bee held in an oral and written format where students answered

questions in rounds.

“The bee is a great forum for students to hone their skills, build confidence and strengthen their interest in geography,” said social studies teacher Laura Siegel. “Congratulations to Liam and to all who challenged themselves by participating in this event.”

Siegel, along with social studies department assistant Danielle Kennedy, moderated the competition. Social studies teacher Josee Charvet judged the event.

There were hundreds of families in attendance and over 30 vendors, a live DJ (DJ Ron, Ultrasound Entertainment), photos with Santa Claus (provided

by Robin Joy Photography), phenomenal and entertaining presentations

by A Step Above, Kids Rock Band “Youth Be Told,” and Champions Tae Kwon Do. Maggie’s On Park was serving up delicious appetizers to holiday shoppers, Village Wines provided wine tasting and Massapequa Moms/ Pequa news provided hot chocolate and candy canes.

Park, Jeff Pravato, Town of Oyster Bay Councilman, Joseph G. Pinto and Nassau County Legislator, Michael Venditto graciously kicked off the Holiday Spectacular.

The event was a huge success and raised $1,021 for Long Island Cares.

Three boxes of food was collected. A very special check presentation held on Thursday, December 19th at Maggie’s on Park.
