The BBCC has multiple upcoming events that they would like everyone to know about, anyone can join!

The Care Behind Your Care: This is a virtual webinar that will take place on February 11th at 6pm. Physicians from The Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital will host a “mock tumor board”, exhibiting the interdisciplinary approach to patient care. $20 per person includes a sherpa lined throw and tote bag!

Online Psychic Night: Join others for a gallery style reading as Georgia Rose channels messages from the other side! This will be a virtual event on February 19th at 7pm. Registration is $20 and those who will attend have the opportunity to partake in a raffle with great prizes!

Scavenger Hunt Bingo: Play 5 rounds of Bingo from home! This virtual event is only $10 per person, which includes your first Bingo card (extra cards are $5 each).

There is lots of fun to be had in this unique experinece on February 25th at 7:15pm.

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon.

Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon.

From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers.

In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you.

The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers.

Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial

Dr. Hardoon is a graduate of Stony Brook University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts with a Minor in

Biology. He obtained his Doctor of Osteopathy from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internship and residency in the Department of Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Hardoon completed his fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, and for the past 3.5 years was a Palliative Care Attending Physician and serves as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein School of Medicine.

Public Skating Sessions for School Winter Recess Week

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson today announced that residents looking for a fun way to spend their winter recess can head to one of the Town’s ice skating facilities, where holiday hours will be in place.

“For a fun, social distanced activity, residents and their families can head out to one of the Town’s ice skating rinks – outdoors at Marjorie Post and Syosset-Woodbury Community Parks, and indoors at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “All three facilities will be offering special public sessions to provide children who are off from school with a fun-filled activity.”

Beginning Monday, February 15th, through Friday, February 19th, all three Town rinks will offer the following holiday schedule: o 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. o 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. o 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. o 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Sunday, February 14th, the indoor Town Ice

Skating Center will be open for the following public sessions: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“Even during these unprecedented times, we want to ensure our residents and their families have recreational opportunities where they can stay safe and practice social distancing,” said Supervisor Saladino.

Capacity is limited at each location, and face masks must be worn at all times.

The outdoor ice rinks are located at Marjorie Post Park, Unqua and Merrick Roads in Massapequa, and at SyossetWoodbury Community Park, 7900 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located within Bethpage Community Park at 1001 Stewart Avenue, in Bethpage.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently joined with William “Bill” Kaltsas, resident of Massapequa and WWII veteran, in celebrating his 100th birthday at The Bristal at Massapequa. Bill is a WWII veteran after being drafted into service in the early days of the war, and his service included

tours to places like New Guinea and the Pacific theater. After returning home from the service, Bill’s entrepreneurial spirit took hold and he opened a successful chain of nightclubs and restaurants, and married his beautiful wife Helen and raised three children.

Teachers Billy Ryan and Ellen Bashan said the idea to create a fictional court case out of “Frankenstein” came from the students.

The trials were held during the first week in January and they didn’t even have to look very far for the perfect setting. A

nearby room that houses Massapequa High School’s law classes and mock trial team is already setup like a courtroom.

Mr. Ryan played the judge and students portrayed the attorneys and witnesses.

Many of the characters in the trial were from the book, but they also added “outside experts” including Freud, the founding father of psychoanalysis, and a forensic criminologist.

Remote students were also able to participate, and an 11th grade English class joined via videoconference to serve as the jury.

The students became fully immersed in their roles.

Even though Frankenstein’s monster confesses to crimes in the book, some members of the jury found him not guilty. Mr. Ryan said that

is a testament to how well students understood the book and were able to use details from it to make their case. He said the case came down to two arguments – was Frankenstein’s monster naturally evil or was he shaped by the circumstances.

Tina Farrell, curriculum associate for English language arts and library media, said teaching students how to form an argument by citing evidence is a major component of English classes. She said the “Frankenstein” project was a perfect example of this.

“It was unbelievable how engaged the students were in the book, because it really did lead to debate,” she said. “They had to use text evidence to defend their positions.”

“We invite experienced and responsible lifeguards to submit applications for this summer season at one of our beautiful pools or beaches. Our lifeguards provide an invaluable service in protecting our residents and have helped

save countless lives in both pool and ocean waters,” said Councilman Imbroto.

“Having a summer lifeguard job at one of our fantastic summer facilities helps build confidence, self-esteem, and leadership skills.

Our lifeguards have a tremendous sense of dedication and understanding of the importance of teamwork.”

Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Positions are

available at all Town pools and beaches.

Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old, possess a current Nassau Lifeguard Certification and a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

Town Accepting New Applications for 9/11 Walls of Honor Memorial Honors Victims of 9/11 Illness

Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each September, the Town unveils newly inscribed names into the Walls of Honor which recognize

darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an ever-increasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.”

Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching

the family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers, residents, students and so many others with cancer certified to be 9/11-related. The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face

a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and 10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the toxic exposure at Ground Zero.

More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness.

The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired
