Bringing Lit to Life Technology enhanced a literature lesson for eighthgraders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, as they recreated scenes from the courtroom drama “12 Angry Men.” The project was coordinated by English teacher Robert Joyce and technology learning coach Danielle Mammolito.

Classroom desks were put together to create a long table in front of a green wall and beside a green curtain.

Students sat around the table playing different members of the jury and acted out scenes from the story that serve as the major plot points.

After recording on iPhones, students were able to edit the video

on their Chromebooks and use green-screen technology to superimpose the background of the jury room. Each finished video was about 10 minutes long.

Mr. Joyce explained that the assignment provided students with an engaging way to better understand the book and learn about the characters.

Story Telling Team Images from the Chris Van Allsburg book, “The Mysteries of Harris Burdick,” inspired a collaborative writing project at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

Fourth-graders, under the direction of library media specialist Jacqueline Lee, worked in pairs on their writing assignments.

Each pair had to select one of 14 images, which only contained a title and a single-line caption. They had to create a story based upon the image that would be one to two minutes long when read aloud.

James Badagliacca and Anthony Pedalino selected the photo, “The Seven Chairs,” which only included a caption about one chair ending up in

France. They decided to write a story about the whereabouts of the other six chairs.

Students worked on their Chromebooks and used Google Docs to collaborate. After their stories are written, each pair will film it with the use of a teleprompter and green screen, and edit using WeVideo.

During the program, which runs from January 22nd through February 11th, students will be asked to read each day and log their participation by recording the book title,

John Piropato, the director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation for the Massapequa School District, has been selected to receive the Athletic Administrator of the Year Award for Chapter 8. The honor will be bestowed upon him from the New York State Athletic Administrators Association.

Mr. Piropato will be presented with the award at the annual NYSAAA Roy O’Neil Conference Awards Banquet in Saratoga on

March 16th. It is presented to a member in good standing of NYSAAA who has made an outstanding contribution to athletics over the years and has worked tirelessly on behalf of student athletes.

This is Mr. Piropato’s 11th year in the Massapequa School District and his 31st year in education.

He began his career as a physical education teacher and coach. The SUNY Cortland graduate holds certifications in school district and athletic administration.

There are 11 sections of athletics in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and Massapequa is part of Section 8. Mr. Piropato serves as president of modified athletics and is a member of the Executive Committee and Athletic Council, as well as the Championship Philosophy, Boys Basketball, Baseball, Girls Basketball Seeding and Nominations committees.

“It is quite an honor to be selected by my peers in the Section as there are many great athletic administrators to choose from,” Mr. Piropato said.

“I am proud to represent Section 8 and of course Massapequa with the award.”

He will also be recognized locally by the Athletic Administrators of Nassau County at its Todd Heimer luncheon in June.

Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time.

Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between.

We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we

see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited.

We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration.

But that was where the academic connection ceased.

Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned.

Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed.

Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken

them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection.

But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago.

Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. As they like to say in Lindy… once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog…

February Charity of the Month:

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage.

Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem.

In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills.

They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage!

Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days.

Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor.

Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information.

Tickets are $200, and all are welcome to attend to support this charity and learn more about what they do! Since 1997, the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) has been working to ensure Massapequa’s children, teens and young adults grow up healthy and make safe choices during adolescence. Its Lock Your Meds. Be Aware. Don’t Share Social Marketing Campaign seeks to combat the issues of heroin, opiates and prescription drug misuse among 12-25 yearolds in the Massapequas by collaborating with parents, residents, teens, and MTAC sector members and partners.

Minogue and Jaclyn Micillo, student volunteers from Ames High School, as well as students from Massapequa High School’s Chiefs Challenge, Active Minds and S.A.D.D. clubs, many Massapequa and Massapequa Park businesses are now displaying MTAC’s Lock Your Med’s posters to increase awareness.

The Lock Your Meds campaign reminds parents and residents to secure their medications as 71% of young people in Massapequa who misuse prescription drugs get them from their homes, friends’ homes or relatives’ homes.

Safeguarding medications is also an essential step to preventing accidental overdose by younger children and teens.

MTAC parents, sector members, partners and Massapequa residents are currently visiting their healthcare providers (doctors, dentists, etc.) to distribute MTAC’s Opioid Prescribing Toolkit and Questions to Ask When Prescribed Medication or Opioids wallet card for patients and caregivers. Improving communication between providers and patients about safe medicine practices will also reduce drug misuse.

Through mystery and intrigue, students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District improved their reading comprehension skills. Third- and fifthgraders took part in a weeklong Submerge Storytelling program, in which a classroom was transformed into the setting of a story.

The fictional story of Trevor Cool, a middleschool student who breaks codes for the CIA, came to life during this

interactive experience.

Facilitator Cory Levine filled the rooms with maps, messages, illustrations, toys and other props that served as clues, and students went around with clipboards to gather evidence and record their findings. They also had to search for hidden keys and crack secret codes.

As the story unfolded and students continued their search for the missing Trevor, Mr. Levine posed questions to get them thinking about

Learning Literacy Skills how the developments connected to the items in the room. The experience taught them about the different elements of a story such as character development, plot and conflict. It also showed them the importance of using evidence to back up their arguments.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Joseph Muscarella announced today the Department of Community and Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division (CAPA) are offering exciting enrichment workshops for the spring 2018 season, and registration for all applications is open from now until Friday, February 23rd.

“Whether you are an emerging artist looking to sharpen your skills, a homeowner looking to add a finishing touch to a room, or a resident looking for a new hobby, consider registering for these wonderful Workshop Enrichment Programs,” Supervisor Saladino said.

“These workshops offer residents the opportunity to develop a new skill while having fun in the process.”

All of the courses will be held at the SyossetWoodbury Community Center, 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury.

Workshops include such topics as interior decorating classes,

home improvements like bathroom makeovers or window treatments and aspiring artists can learn about drawing and painting.

These workshops are a wonderful opportunity to broaden your horizons.”
