The Corporate Source (TCS) is a non-profit organization that started in 1996. They strive to change the perceptions of individuals with disabilities in the workforce by having them work in integrated settings where their value, productivity, commitment and dedication can be experienced by all. To accomplish this mission, TCS addresses the factors a ecting employment inequity and overcomes barriers to employment that keep this staggering number of people with disabilities excluded from the workforce. TCS is extremely proud of their work and today the operate in over 100 locations , many here on Long Island, NY.

Despite an increased knowledge base and laws, such as the Americans With Disabilities Act, the overwhelming number of people with disabilities are either unemployed or underemployed. In America alone, roughly 61 million adults live with a disability. Today, about 1 in 6 American children are diagnosed with a developmental disability and they then age out of most public programming when they become 21. With less to do each day and having fewer prospects for employment, these young adults often become socially isolated and depressed.

Sometimes, employers may have misconceptions which make them reluctant to hire a person with disabilities. TCS works to change perceptions to show employers the benefits of an inclusive workforce. Given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and capabilities, these employees show dependability, honesty, tenacity and dedication to doing the best job possible. Several TCS workers have received awards and recognition for their achievements and outstanding performance on the job.

TCS employs nearly 400 people with disabilities in the greater New York tristate region, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, providing outsourcing services to several federal, state and

private sector organizations. A small sample of their longterm client collaborations include Janitorial and Disinfecting Services for the US Merchant Marine Academy, Mail-room Operations at Long Island and NYC Internal Revenue Service locations, Call Center Support at the Manhattan VA Medical Center and Kennel Care for the Department of Homeland Security at JFK Airport.

Most recently, they have partnered with the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) to develop a program for professionally educating and training people with disabilities for entry level positions in the growing IT field. Corporations like Microsoft, Ernst & Young and more have had very positive experiences where people with disabilities are e ective for these positions from a number of perspectives.

This non-profit works year-round through special events, networking opportunities, social media outreach and other e orts to raise awareness and funds to support disability employment initiatives. There are many ways that you can support the mission of TCS.

Hometown Heroes Recognition Applications Now Available

Oyster Bay Town

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town is now accepting applications for the 2023 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents.

“My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program has received from residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola.

“We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and look forward to further recognizing our veterans, active duty

service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.”

Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November. Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones. A Special Family Touch

Stanley Barany Sr. was born in Hungary in 1943. At the age of thirteen he, along with his brother and parents, escaped the revolution and came to America. Stanley later began working at a bakery, which was close to a monument company where he eventually landed a new job. As he quickly picked up the trade and excelled in all his work there, to his surprise he started to realize he was an artist (at the time all monument creation was done by hand). In the 1960s, Stanley proudly opened Heart 2 Heart in Lindenhurst, where he offered inscriptions and monuments. This changed to R. Barany Monuments, Inc. when Randy took over. His company wasn’t the only success in his life, as Stanley became the father of five children over the years. At one point or another four sons worked at the business. Randy, his youngest son, first started working with his dad at the age of eight. However, as a young child he didn’t understand the significance of their work, until a single moment forever changed and guided his life. While at a cemetery as a young child

he had been running around the stones and just being a kid. His father called him over and said to him, “Listen son, all these people are someone’s family, you cannot play like this. You need to treat every stone you ever touch or work on as if it was my stone.” This stuck with Randy throughout his entire career and the company’s mottos later became, “Let our family help your family” and “Walk in as a customer but leave as family”.

Randy worked for his dad for about twenty years. Since he was the youngest, he never imagined that one day he would own and take over the business. However, as things became more digital, in reference to design work for their products, Randy became more involved in the progression of the company’s direction. He and his brother Scott stayed at the company with their father. When Randy took over, their mother Margaret and Scotts son, Scott Jr., joined the team as well.

In 2012, Randy took over the company and kept Scott on as one of the best layout and blasters in the business.

Scott had started working for his dad at the age of

eighteen and now has been in this industry well over thirty years, having called out sick only twice in his career. Scott’s son has also joined the family business. Currently, they are one of the best monument design and etching companies in the business and have been in business for over 50 years. They are also one of the top-rated Yahoo! And Google companies. - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently administered the Oath of Office to Massapequa Fire Commissioner Michael Gange, who was re-elected on Wednesday, December 13, 2022. Holding the Bible is Commissioner Gange’s wife, Linda. Commissioner Gange first was elected Commissioner in 2013. He has been a member of the Massapequa Fire Department for the past 43 years and served as Chief of the Department from 1992 to 2000. Supervisor Saladino proudly led the installation, and thanked members of the volunteer fire service for their selfless dedication to the community.

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment are generally urged to avoid vaccinations other than the flu shot, though that conventional wisdom may not be applicable in relation to the COVID-19 virus. The ACS notes that vaccines require an immune system response to work effectively, and cancer patients’ immune systems may not be able to produce an adequate response to vaccines during treatment. That can make vaccines, including those for COVID-19, less effective. However, while traditionally cancer patients have been urged to avoid vaccinations during treatment, the ACS notes that cancer patients, due to fragile immune systems resulting from both their disease and the treatments for it, are at risk for severe COVID-19 disease. As a result, doctors may still advise their patients to receive the COVID-19 vaccination even during treatment, as having some measure of protection against the virus may still be better than having none at all. No two cancer patients are the same, so those concerned about COVID-19 and the vaccinations against it are urged to discuss those concerns and their options with their cancer care team

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his partners in Nassau County government, Supervisor Jen DeSena of North Hempstead and Supervisor Don Clavin of Hempstead, to denounce an ill-conceived progressive proposal that would impact Long Island suburbs and single-family home zoning. The latest proposal by Governor Hochul –seemingly a repeat of last year’s plan to turn suburban neighborhoods into overcrowded urban centers – would result in thousands of apartments and high density housing flooding every community, as well as spot zoning in which large scale apartment buildings could pop up next to singlefamily homes.

“We must save our suburbs from this ill-conceived

plan as it would overcrowd classrooms, greatly increase traffic and cars parked on our streets, strain emergency services and threaten the environment,” said Supervisor Saladino.

Town Completes Upgrade Of T-Ball Field At John Burns Park

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the upgrade of the t-ball athletic field at John Burns Park in Massapequa, known as the ‘West’ field, is now complete and ready to welcome young athletes this spring.

“My administration is proud to have secured $50,000 in New York State grant funding toward the purchase and installation of this new turf field at John Burns Park,” said Supervisor Saladino. “These important aesthetic and safety upgrades will enhance the overall playing experience for our little leaguers and others who use these fields.”

This t-ball field is the latest improvement to be made at this facility, which saw field replacements at several other locations to enhance and increase playtime for thousands of young athletes. As a result of the State grant funds, administered through the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, the Town’s portion of the field replacement was under $4,300. Synthetic turf fields generally have an approximate useful life of 10 years and are less expensive than the longterm cost of maintaining natural grass and a dirt surface. They also provide the potential for fewer cancellations of games due to inclement weather.

This field was originally constructed more than 10 years ago.

“Synthetic fields aesthetically improve the look of our local communities and help increase play time for our young athletes, while beautifying our park,” said Councilman Labriola. “We continue to enhance our parks in a cost-conscious manner while protecting your wallet and keeping taxes down.”

Three Cheers For Massapequa’s Challenger Squad

A performance for a packed house was a shining moment for students on the Massapequa School District’s Challenger cheerleading team. The team was chosen to showcase their routine at a recent Nassau County cheerleading competition.

Ed Hoffman, the physical education chairman and athletic coordinator at Berner Middle School, said that this was a new opportunity for

the Challenger cheerleading squad, which normally cheers at Challenger basketball games. The team is comprised of students from grades 6-12, led by coaches Dr. Lauren Dean and Kathleen Wegener.

Mr. Hoffman said he reached out to the Nassau County public school cheerleading coordinator, who enthusiastically gave the green light for Massapequa’s squad to perform in between

the middle school and high school portions of the Jan. 7 competition at Wantagh High School. With middle school and high school squads in the building, as well as coaches and families, they performed for a sizable crowd.

“It was awesome,” Mr. Hoffman said. “The students had a great time. They were able to perform for a much larger audience, surrounded by people from different

towns and high schools, which made it very special.”

Students from the Best Buddies club, which has chapters at Berner, Ames and the high school, worked with cheerleaders to help practice their routine, and also attended the Jan. 7 performance to show their support.

Mr. Hoffman, the Nassau County coordinator for the Challenge sports league, said

that there is a soccer program in the fall, along with basketball and cheerleading in the winter season. This coming spring, a track and field program will be added.

“There’s something special about being part of a team within your school,” he said, “and that’s what Challenger sports provides our students.”
