January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation

The PBS Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was established to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. They particularly focus on selfdetermination and full inclusion in the local community.

Their mission is to help these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, as well as encourage long-term planning and to support efforts towards establishing social connections and friendships in the community.

For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and pursue their personal goals, while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality.

In New York State, anyone who is eligible for OPWDD Services (NYS Office For People With Developmental Disabilities) and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver, can choose to selfdirect their services. As of September 30, 2018, there were 2,926 individuals enrolled in ‘Self Direction’ on Long Island. (Source: NYS OPWDD) Self-Direction is a person-centered approach that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to create a life plan with supports that they chose, based on their unique strengths, needs and goals.

It also gives the individual more control over

how funding is used to purchase needed support and services.

While the number of individuals choosing to self direct their services is quickly growing, the PBS Community Foundation aims to provide support through grass roots, community based networks.

The PBS Community Foundation initiatives started with Big Time Glee, a singing group that now meets twice a month in Smithtown.

This group performs at various events such as Long Island Ducks games!

In response to numerous requests from the Self-Directed community, the Foundation created a similar group in Nassau, which meets monthly in Bellmore. This is called the Nassau Voice.

Aditionally, another initative, The Crafting Connection, meets every other week to work on different crafty projects or just to socialize and play games.

More recently, Self-Directed individuals are focusing on the health of their mind and body. The PBS Community Foundation offers Yoga Without Boundaries twice a month at the Yoga Darshana Center in West Babylon.

This center generously donates the space and Dan Elfawal, a certified special educator and yoga instructor, leads a free yoga class open to individuals with all abilities. Dan says the students walk away focused, calm and self confident. Through the practice of yoga, students build strength and develop coping skills, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle.

Dozens of active and retired police officers visited Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on January 9th for the third annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Guests included officers from the Nassau County, Suffolk County, New York City, Port Authority and village police departments, as well as corrections officers and emergency medical technicians.

Many of the officers were a relative of a student or staff member, while others responded to invitational fliers that were sent out to local precincts and through PTA email blasts.

Officers visited classrooms throughout the morning to talk about their job responsibilities, training and tools.

Children met officers and dogs from canine units, and got to see members of the Nassau County Police Department’s Mounted

Unit out front on their horses. The New York City Police Department Marching Band performed for the entire school, and the bomb squad visited fourth-grade classes with its robot and bomb-sniffing dog.

Students showed their appreciation in many ways including by wearing blue to school. The children decorated welcoming posters that were hung throughout the school and wrote thank-you cards and letters. Each officers received a gift bag filled with symbolic goodies such as a piece of caramel

Let’s Take In Some Culture This Weekend “Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life.” - Unknown When was the last time you took in a nice play, or a concert in an intimate venue? Perhaps an art gallery showing, featuring some local up and coming artists, or a museum exhibit?

I don’t know about you, but culture really feeds my soul. A weekend spent entrenched in the arts or science or history can feel akin to a mini-vacation, and makes me feel connected to my humanity and the world around me. Come to think of it, a nourishing hobby can do the same; whether it is volunteering at your local animal shelter, jewelry making, horseback riding (my personal favorite) or rockclimbing. It could be just about anything.

I can’t speak for everyone, but for those of us who are often entrenched in the routine of grocery shopping, play dates, errands and preparing for the

week ahead, we can sometimes lose sight of the opportunity that each weekend holds for us.

As I edit the Coming Events Around Town calendar each week for the newspaper, I see so many interesting and culturally enriching events taking place throughout Long Island. I will admit, I have been guilty of thinking, “Note to self. You have to go check this out,” and then I’ll get sidetracked and forget to go. I’ll let myself get so swept up in life that the days will get away from me. It happens to the best of us. But the twenty-four hours that we are granted each day are filled with endless promise, and we owe it to ourselves to make the most of them whenever possible.

When it comes to squeezing every ounce of opportunity out of each weekday in terms of career, I’m batting a thousand. But I’ve been slacking a bit on squeezing every ounce of life and enjoyment out of the 48 hours between Friday night and Sunday night.

Let’s make this a collective challenge! Each weekend, let’s

comb through What’s Happening Around Town in South Bay’s Neighbor as well as other local Long Island newspapers. Look at everything the area has to offer, from movie screenings and crafting, to classes, lectures and music events. Next time something catches your eye, stop in your tracks, make plans and get tickets, or simply make a reservation. Incidentally, you would be surprised at the amount of free activities around town.

Feeling like a homebody this winter? Invite a bunch of friends over for a Saturday night potluck dinner and classic movie screening. Share laughs, memories and great food. Then take in some classic films in your living room. Maybe even break out a board game or two.

Do something that will have you skipping back to work or school, or the Monday routine, with newfound vigor. I’m holding myself to this one too.

Transformative Art at McKenna Every year, students can count on the self-portrait project at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Art teacher Ellen Cervone said that the project not only documents how students grow and change physically from

kindergarten through fifth-grade, but also captures the development of their artistic abilities.

The self-portraits are made with pencil and crayon, and finished with a watercolor wash. The students are aided by mirrors and “This is me”

Ms. Cervone keeps all of the completed selfportraits and gives them to the children upon their graduation from elementary school.

Kindergartners learned about weather during a hands-on STEAM lesson at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. They explored severe storms including blizzards, hurricanes, thunderstorms

and tornadoes.

Led by Magnet and STEAM teacher Joanne Markowski and with support from the kindergarten teachers, students conducted their own science experiments.

They put water, glitter and

plastic beads into small jars, then shook them in a counterclockwise manner. Children observed the funnels created in the water, as well as the disruptions to the glitter and beads, simulating the lift caused by wind.

Couples have often said that choosing whomever they desire to stand beside them during their wedding is more authentic than separating people simply because of gender.

In a recent story on TheKnot, written by Carrie Anton, wedding planner Alex Chalk stated that with abandoning traditional gender roles in wedding parties, brides or grooms “get to be surrounded by the ones you want by your side,” regardless of gender. Supposing the brides closest friend and confidante happens to be male, or the groom’s closest pal just happens to be female? It’s becoming more and more accepted to bestow bridal party designations as the bride and groom so desire.

The article goes on to state that these modern bridal party roles obviously require new name designations, hence bridesman or groomsmaid. But let’s not forget the anticipated special designations of bride’s best man or groom of honor.

Braised Lentil and Chard with Sausage

Kristen Link grew up in a German home where Sunday dinners often meant a feast of sausage or bratwurst. Now, an Integrative Holistic Health Coach and Founder of Wellness By Kristen (www.wellnessbykristen.com), she’s created an updated and more nutritionally dense version of her childhood favorite.

“This dish is comfort, homestyle cooking for the winter,” says Link.

“It’s a one pot dish, so you can make it during the week and have plenty of leftovers the next day.”

What You Will Need:

1 1/4 lb. sweet Italian Sausage 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 up diced yellow onions 1 large garlic clove minced 1/2 cup diced carrots 1/2 cup diced celery 1 cup diced fennel bulb (stems removed) 2 cups packed, roughly chopped Swiss Chard - stems removed and diced 1 cup green or brown lentils washed 1 bay leaf 1/2 dry red wine 2 1/2 cups beef stock 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes salt and pepper to taste

Add in lentils and stir. Pour in wine to de-glaze the pan, scrapping any bits up off the bottom if necessary. Pour in the remaining stock (or water) making sure the lentils are almost entirely submerged. Add the bay leaf.

Let the pot come to a low boil before setting the burner to low heat and simmering with the lid off.

After 15 minutes, add in chard leaves and stir. If at this point the lentils still seem al dente or are no longer covered in liquid, add a little more stock or water until they are submerged. Season as needed with your red chili flakes, salt and pepper.

Place sausage links into the lentil mixture so that they are halfway covered. Let cook for another 10 minutes or until the lentils absorbed.

Serve with crusty bread if desired!

Preparation: In a large Dutch oven or saucepan with a lid, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add sausages in a single layer. Cook on each side until they are brown. Remove sausages from pan and set aside.

Add the remaining oil to the pan and add in onion. Cook onions for 5 minutes until they are tender.

Add garlic and cook 1 minute before adding in carrots, celery, fennel and chard stems. Stir well and cook for 5 more minutes.

Massapequa High School student-artist Steven Rogers was recognized with a Juror’s Award in the Advanced Visions 15: High School Artist of Excellence exhibition.

Steven, a senior, was among 63 students from Long Island whose work was selected for the show, which ran from Dec. 11 through Jan. 9 at the B. David Schwartz Memorial Library at LIU Post. He additionally was one of only three students to earn a Juror’s Award.

The exhibit recognizes the superior artistic work done by high school students in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Portfolio Preparation art programs across Long Island. Steven’s AP studio

art teacher, Gale Domingo, art will remain a part of his nominated his oil painting life. titled “Under Overcast” for The inspiration for his painting, which was completed as a summer assignment for his AP art class, is a scene from a park near his home. He said it was his first time using a palette knife as an artistic tool. Ms. Domingo said she selected his piece for the exhibition because of the sophisticated technique.

My Journey With Anxiety Many of you read my Living Well column each week where I shared what I have learned about living your best life. Like you, my wisdom was hard earned through years of ups and downs, and evolution.

One of my major downs was years of suffering with anxiety and panic attacks.

Since having my book, Journaling Fame: A memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, come out in the spring of 2017, I have come to learn just how common this is. Forty million Americans suffer with, or have suffered from, various forms of anxiety, depression, OCD and panic attacks. If you are currently struggling with this, know that you are not alone.

Below is a small excerpt from my book to give you an introduction to what I went through at my worst: At 3 AM on a July 2012 morning, I lay helpless on an emergency room cot, unable to experience any emotion other than fear and the physical sensations that racked my body. My extreme levels of anxiety did not cease; my body showed me no mercy, perhaps because my racing mind did not extend that courtesy to my body. I was wrapped in a backless hospital gown and meagerly strewn blanket that had been nuked in a microwave to keep me warm. I was uncontrollably shaking and shivering

from the inside out. I felt aches and pains and my eyes bulged with fright and confusion. “What is happening to me?” I thought.

As a chronic baseline anxiety sufferer my entire life, I was in the throes of the worst and most extended episode of acute anxiety I’d ever known.

I was experiencing five or six full blown panic attacks per day, generalized anxiety, agoraphobia and unbearable physical sensations. I feared I was dying, or worse, losing my mind and “going crazy,” a common fear among those with anxiety and panic disorder.

It all started when I was seven or eight years old (the age my son is now) and I began to experience intense feelings of worry connected to my physical health. As I reached my preteen years my anxiety grew more ambitious and branched out to what we now commonly refer to as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). But at twelve years old it just kind of felt like this: “Lock the door and check it three times or something bad might happen.”

“Touch the wall as you walk by if you want to stay safe.”

You might recognize the above as obsessivecompulsive thoughts and behaviors or “magical thinking,” and you may have even experienced

something resembling it.

By the time I was a teenager I had graduated to the trifecta: anxiety/ panic, OCD and depression.

It was also around this time that I discovered that my well of creativity, intuition and compassion ran deep.

The spoken and written word became my solace, and the gift I felt I had to offer the world. My highly sensitized being may have created anxiety, but it also blossomed into an ability to connect with others in a rarefied way, and to express myself as a successful journalist and writer.

This excerpt from my book was also published by the ADAA - Anxiety and Depression Association of America, with the purpose of lending my voice and support to this community.

After years of asking, “Why me?” I never again have to ask that question.

Through sharing my story in the media, and through speaking engagements, I have turned it around from a challenge to a gift.
