The Snooze Button By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway.

So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult.

(Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”

and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.)

In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again.

Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

The holiday spirit swept through Birch Lane Elementary School as fifth graders in John Coyne’s class worked as busy holiday elves to collect nearly 1,500 toys for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation.

The foundation brings toys to sick and less fortunate children in more than 185 facilities throughout Long Island.

Through the generosity of students, staff and parents, this year’s drive collected a record-breaking 1,492 toys

Prosthetic Lesson Certified Prosthetist and Certified Athletic Trainer Susan Wisla was a guest speaker for Robert Gariglio’s Biology class.

Wisla talked to students about the profession, including how they make and fit prosthetics for patients; how she got her start in the profession, what a typical day is like

for her, and what course work for both high school and college are needed for the profession.

Girls On The Run On a blustery Sunday, several girls from McKenna Elementary School and another from Unqua Elementary School participated in a 5K run in support of the “Girls On The Run” program.

“Girls On The Run” is a transformational, physical-activitybased, positive youthdevelopment program for girls in third-eighth grade.

Their coaches teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games.

The program culminates with a celebratory 5K running event.

Through this program, girls unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

Participants included

McKenna students Emily Mucci, Allie Stordeur, Kellie Brunner, Keira Lovett, Villaire Jackson, Hayley Tan, Grace LeViness and Unqua student Olivia Messina.

“We are so proud of these girls and their increased confidence!” said Dr. Lowry, principal A five-year-old boy with of McKenna Elementary leukemia was granted School. his wish for a backyard “paradise” complete with a swing set, rock-climbing wall and water slide, thanks to Lockhart Elementary School’s fundraising campaign that raised more than $4,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The yearly tradition is the biggest fundraiser for the school and, at 26 years, is the longest-running school fundraiser for the foundation.

Each fall, sixth-grade teacher Donald Bresnihan organizes a walk-a-thon where students raise GIRLS ON THE RUN - Girls from McKenna and Unqua elementary schools feel funds by asking family and friends to pledge empowered at the Girls On The Run 5K event.

After the monies are tallied, a large cardboard check is made out to the foundation and presented by the Student Council to Pat Clemency, regional CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, during a special assembly immediately following the school’s holiday concert.

In a room brimming with holiday cheer, Bresnihan spoke to the student body about how little moments of kindness and thinking of others make us who we are and who we will become.

“You’ve made these small moments a great moment,” he said.

Clemency also spoke about how “little moments” such as a smile or sliding down a slide are really big moments for children who are battling a disease. “She called them the wish behind the wish; the moments that take place because a wish is granted.

“If you could close your eyes and imagine what a wish could bring, you would not even come close to understanding how much that wish means,” she said. “Thank you for conducting the longest fundraiser for the organization and for making a difference in the lives of others.”

Sharing The Season The holidays are a wonderful time of year, a time to enjoy our family and friends.

For the children and adolescents at South Oaks Hospital, the season was much brighter through the generosity of the Massapequa Kiwanis Club.

On December 23rd, Kiwanis Club representatives Kathleen Behan, Rick Falta and Susan Febbraro arrived at South Oaks Hospital’s

Valentine Hall weighed down with toys, pajamas, slippers and games for all the kids. The gifts were selected by the members of the Kiwanis to meet the unique needs and ages of the children and adolescents.

“The excitement and smiles on our children and adolescent faces will be invaluable. Through the kindness of the Kiwanis Club and their mission of community service, our

kids will feel firsthand the magic of the season,” said Christine Moran, vice president of behavioral health services.
