DONATIONS - The Massapequa Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary presented donations to Dean J. Gallo, Commander of American Legion Post 1066, and Leonard E. Scheiner, Past Commander of AmVets Post 88, at their November 3rd Auxiliary Meeting. The meeting took place in the George Beato room at the Massapequa Fire Department on Hicksville Road. They will also present two additional donations to the VFW Post 7277 and the VFW Post 7763. They were both unable to attend the meeting.

Residents Invited To Submit Photos For Town Publications

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for future use in Town publications.

“Our residents recently received their 2022 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Johnson.

Councilwoman Johnson noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but highquality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@oysterbayny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted to

the Town’s Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and brief description of the photo are included with their submission. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names and subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects they may appear in a Town publication.

Top Honors Reflect Years Of Hard Work

Massapequa High School seniors James Bacheller and Christina Fradella were in the same class when they were called down, one by one, to Principal Barbara Lowell’s office. In this case, being summoned to see the principal was a good thing, as they were told they are the top two graduates of the Class of 2023.

James is the valedictorian with a grade point average of 101.958 and Christina is the salutatorian with the second highest GPA at 101.146. After finding out the news, both made phone calls to their parents.

“It means a lot to me,” James said. “It’s not just the four years of high school that went into it.”

James said that at a young age, his parents taught him how to be a good student. He excelled at Birch Lane Elementary School, and kept that diligence as he moved onto Berner Middle School, ninth grade at the Ames Campus, and finally the high school’s main

campus.

Christina, who started out at Unqua Elementary School, said that with two brothers who graduated before her, it is nice to have an accomplishment to call her own. Admittedly an anxious student who always sought to do well on assignments and tests, she explained that earning salutatorian honors shows that her hard work meant something.

“I was really surprised and very excited,” she said.

James is planning to major in biomedical engineering in college. His favorite courses at Massapequa High School include pre-calculus, Advanced Placement physics and AP United States History. He has also been active in student life, serving as a student government officer, vice president of Science Olympiad and member of Mathletes and the tennis team. James even started his own club, the Allergy and Asthma

Awareness Club which primarily does fundraising for organizations that support people with those conditions. Outside of school, he tutors students in math and science, and participated in a summer science research program through Hofstra University. After high school, Christina looks to study environmental engineering. Classes she has enjoyed include precalculus, AP chemistry and AP United States History. In her science research class, she is working on creating a solar-powered rain water collector and purifier. Christina is the historian for student government, has won three medals with the Science Olympiad team, belongs to the robotics club and is a three-sport athlete as a member of the tennis, winter track and lacrosse teams. Christina works with youth lacrosse players to help train goalies and organized a food drive for St. Rose of Lima Church.

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

As home to 72,000 military veterans, Suffolk County has more veterans than any of the other 61 counties in New York State. With Veterans Day occurring in November, this month is a ﬁtting time to recognize local organizations that serve the veterans community, such as our Charity of the Month, the Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

MHAW offers a wide spectrum of assistance to Suffolk County veterans in respect to affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, peer support, and other services. This column focuses on MHAW’s permanent housing for veterans with support services.

In October of 2021, MHAW celebrated the opening of three new homes, adding to their capacity to offer permanent residences for formerly homeless veterans. The three houses became available through Suffolk County’s “Housing Our Homeless Heroes Act” where abandoned properties are transferred to non-proﬁt organizations that serve at-risk and homeless veterans. The initiative is funded through New York State’s Ofﬁce of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s “Homeless Housing and Assistance Program.”

Ashanta Murray, a Navy veteran of eight years with three young children, is now living in one of the homes. “I was so proud to serve in the Navy – and to come home and try to ﬁnd housing was such a struggle,” Ms. Murray said. “To serve your country and come home to face homelessness should never happen. This home for me and my children has been such a blessing.”

Aside from a new home, veterans receive such support services as employment and training opportunities, counseling, peer support, independent living skills training, linkage to primary healthcare, substance use disorder treatment, mental healthcare, childcare and other beneﬁts.

The goal of this kind of permanent housing and support services is to prevent

chronic illness, promote a healthy and safe environment, promote wellbeing, prevent mental health and substance use disorders and to help veterans continue to live in their communities in a manner consistent with their abilities and goals. MHAW aims to purchase and rehab additional homes in the future.

“We owe our veterans deep gratitude and must ensure that they have the opportunity to thrive,” said Colleen Merlo, CEO of MHAW. “They cannot do that without safe and consistent housing. It is an honor to be part of this program.”

For several years, MHAW focused its attention on offering temporary housing for homeless veterans at a shelter in Yaphank. Through the efforts of MHAW along with community and government partners, Long Island has made signiﬁcant strides in addressing homelessness among veterans in recent years. “We have reached a point where when a veteran is homeless, they do not remain homeless for very long,” said Ms. Merlo. “We are proud to have helped to support this trend through our affordable and permanent housing work as well as our focus on employment opportunities and support services to veterans and their families.”

It is a brand new program that our board came together and created last year to help bring the community together after Covid. We also have our tree lighting coming up which is such a great night.

The Chamber has also put in place some other Programs together to help highlight our local businesses. We are upgrading our systems to be able to better share our member’s events, bringing in guest speakers at our Lunch & Learns, creating Business After Hours events to help bring our businesses together. The most exciting thing we are working on is online promotion of our local businesses. We are working with a company to create video content so we can all get online.

This aligns with our Shop Local program that is a big part of the local Chambers of Commerce marketing going on in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. People like to shop local, but many research online rst. Video is the number one preferred source for shoppers to get information. So by providing this program, our local businesses can compete online to keep that money right here in our community.

The other highlight I want to bring up is our Veterans breakfast. This month we recognize local Veterans who help the community. This group is sometimes forgotten in the current environment, and it is important to make sure of the Veterans who go above and beyond. Please come down to the breakfast at Dave and Busters this Thursday to help us recognize these deserving people.

Stop & Shop donated 2,000 Thanksgiving turkeys to Island Harvest and Long Island Cares during the first intermission when the New York Islanders host the Calgary Flames at UBS Arena in Elmont. The Food Bank Presidents participated in the Stop & Shop Shoot-Out –attempting a center ice shot to secure their donations.

The donation of turkeys is part of Stop & Shop’s annual Turkey Express program which provides more than

25,000 turkeys to hunger relief organizations across the supermarket’s footprint.

As the official supermarket of the Islanders, Stop & Shop’s donation spotlights the increased need the Food Banks are facing going into the holiday season: Island Harvest Food Bank expects to collect and distribute 14,500 turkeys and tens of thousands of pounds of trimmings necessary to complete a holiday-style meal for Long Islanders coping

with food insecurity.

Island Harvest Food Bank serves approximately 300,000 families at various times during the year.

Last year the food bank supplemented 18 million meals for Long Islanders struggling with food insecurity.

Across Long Island, more than 148,000 students are qualified to receive free or reduced-price school meals.

Girl Scouts Of Nassau County Receives $1.8 Million Donation From MacKenzie Scott

Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently announced that it has received a $1.8 million donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Through this generous donation, Girl Scouts of Nassau County will accelerate programming designed to equip girls with the tools to become the next generation of powerful leaders, create new programmatic opportunities, encourage access for new communities, improve cultural competency and think outsidethe-box to create new ways to meet the needs of today’s girls. This generous gift is part of an $84.5 million donation awarded to GSUSA and 29 local councils selected by MacKenzie Scott, making this unprecedented investment the largest donation from a single individual in the national organization’s history.

“This humbling and empowering gift will accelerate our ability to provide girls with the tools and mentorship to make a difference in their communities and make the world a better place,” said Randell Bynum, the chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “At Girl Scouts of Nassau County, we see how our programming excites and inspires girls across every community we serve, and this generous contribution will further Girl Scouts mission to help our girls grow into future leaders in business, science, arts and everything in between, and will help us expand access through innovation and diversity. We are incredibly grateful for MacKenzie Scott’s commitment to supporting and uplifting young girls.”

The $1.8 million funding is expected to have an immediate impact on Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s programming.

Among the planned initiatives is establishment of a new, 1250-2500 square-foot girl program center and event space in a growing Girl Scout neighborhood. This facility will strategically hold daily Girl Scout programming and also serve as flexible location for council programs, activities with community partners, troop/service unit meetings and production studio to give girls media and content development experience.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County also plans to develop a threeyear strategic plan focusing on diversity to ensure all girls have access to Girl Scouts and feel like they belong. This will include comprehensive training opportunities for staff members, DEI workshops for volunteers and implementing age-appropriate programming experiences for girls at all levels. In addition, Girl Scouts of Nassau County has also created an IDEA Lab (Innovation, Diversity, Equity and Access), which is the staff team that will focus on innovative efforts, both operational and programmatic for the organization. This will include bolstering a range of pilot programs including expanding family engagement experiences, promoting advocacy for girls and fostering mental and physical wellness, art exploration and college and career readiness.

PSEG Long Island Employee-Military Veterans Shine A Light On PTSD And Veteran Suicide

A group of military veterans who are PSEG Long Island employees recently took to the water to raise awareness of mental health issues afﬂicting many veterans. The group was among 22 veterans participating in the ﬁfth “22 PTSD Awareness Challenge” (22PAC) event, an arduous, 22-mile kayaking trip from Bridgeport, Conn. to Port Jefferson to help shine a light on veteran PTSD and end veteran suicide.

In teams of two, the 22 veterans operated pedalpowered kayaks in a physically demanding, ﬁvehour cross-Sound journey. The hot sun, humidity and headwinds made the trip that much more difﬁcult.

The number 22 is signiﬁcant for this event because it is the estimated number of military veterans who take their own lives each day.

Here’s what the employees had to say about the event:

Devin McLaughlin of East Moriches, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, participated for the second time this year.

“Some people I met in the

service are no longer with us because they lost their battles with depression,” said McLaughlin. “In a small way, doing this ride helps me think of them and lets me know I’m doing my part for them and for other veterans facing challenges.”

Michael Probst and Tom Leuschner, both U.S. Army veterans, are co-workers and Holbrook residents who supported the cause this year.

“I did the 22 PAC for my brothers and sisters in the armed forces and to support a great cause,” said Probst. “I hope this event helped to bring awareness to this issue because 22 veterans a day taking their own lives is completely unacceptable and preventable.”

“I was so proud to be a part of this great cause,” said Leuschner. “This is the least I could do for our veterans who have done so much for us.”

Tom Sketch of Seaford, a U.S. Navy veteran, was one of the kayakers.

“It’s a great event to bring awareness to the challenges veterans face after their

service is completed,” said Sketch. “It was a little more difﬁcult than I thought it would be but we had beautiful weather and I am glad I was able to complete it!”

Matt Testagrose of Shoreham, a U.S. Army veteran, participated in the event.

“It was great to see my fellow veterans and coworkers come together to show support for PTSD awareness,” he said.

Leo Tolson, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Center Moriches, said, “The trip was exhausting but I wanted to do something to help raise awareness of how many veterans need help.”

SHINING A LIGHT ON PTSD AND VETERAN SUICIDE - A group of military veterans who are PSEG Long Island employees recently took to the water to raise awareness of mental health issues afﬂicting many veterans. Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score signiﬁcantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers.

The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least

one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

Largest ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys For Tots Collection Drive Coming To Long Island

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that the Town’s massive ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys for Tots Collection Drive will take place at John Burns Park in Massapequa

on Saturday, December 3rd from 9am to 2pm (rain date is Sunday, December 4th). In partnership with the United States Marine Corps and Optimum, the Town is collecting toys to help families and those

less fortunate throughout the community during the upcoming holiday season.

In addition to the ‘CruiseThru’, collection boxes are located at Town facilities through December 14th.

Supervisor Saladino said, “The Toys for Tots Drive has long been a huge success under the leadership of the U.S. Marine Corps, especially here in the Town of Oyster Bay, as just last year we collected over 20,000 toys for Long Island children. I encourage all of our residents who are able to donate to this amazing cause, as the Toys for Tots Drive helps ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness.”

The ‘Cruise Thru Holiday Toy Drive’ will provide residents an excellent way to contribute directly

to the cause and help bring a smile to a child’s face this holiday season. Additionally, the event will feature an appearance by Santa Claus, and a drop box where kids can drop their letters to Santa off at. Letters dropped off with a legible name and return address will be answered by Santa before the holiday.

“Toys for Tots sends a message of hope to less fortunate children who otherwise wouldn’t be receiving presents this holiday season. I urge residents, who can, to donate new unwrapped toys to any of our dropoff locations,” said Councilman Tom Hand. “By making a donation, you can help ease the ﬁnancial burden of families hardest hit by the effects of the coronavirus this holiday season.”
