Epiphany Lessons & Carols

“Epiphany Lessons & Carols” will be held at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, 2 Bayview Ave, Massapequa, on Sunday, January 3 at 3:00 pm. This event, one in the church’s 20202021 Concert Series, will feature the Parish Choir, and Youth Bell and Teen Bell Ensembles, with brass quartet and organ. Admission is free.

All are welcome. Face masks required and social distancing protocols in effect.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay was proud to partner with Aliyah Petrone to collect donations for hospital patients throughout Long Island. Together with Councilwoman Maier, we honored cancer survivor Aliyah Petrone of Massapequa for giving back to our community.

At the age of 18, Aliyah was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and received multiple blood transfusions at Cohen

Children’s Medical Center.

Aliyah has a heart of gold and helped coordinate this drive so that blood donations are readily available for others.”

“Blood donations are extremely important to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients.

During this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest drive in our local area, was critical and helped our local hospitals meet demand and continue their lifesaving operations during these extraordinary times,” stated Councilwoman Maier.

Each class is approximately 30 to 45 minutes long. The cost of the program is $25 per child who is a Town resident, and $30 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child.

This 6-week program offers classes at the Town’s Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room and Hicksville Athletic Center, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Registration will take place on January 6, 2021, from 1 pm to 4 pm, at the Hicksville Athletic Center, 67 South Broadway, in Hicksville.

“Auld Lang Syne” “Auld Lang Syne” is a Scottish poem that was written by Robert Burns in 1788. Burns claimed when he wrote the words down and put them to music, and later sent them the poem to the Scots Musical Museum, that “Auld Lang Syne” was an ancient song, but he had been the first to record it on paper. According to Scotland. org, the phrase “auld lang syne” translates roughly to

“for old times’ sake.” Others have translated it to mean “time goes by” or even as “once upon a time.” The song is about preserving old friendships and reminiscing about events that occurred during the year. Many people sing it to evoke fellowship and nostalgia, though most cannot fully get past the first verse of the song. Its lyrics are a challenge to the unfamiliar - even among

The Origins of NYE Traditions Traditions are the glue that hold many celebrations together.

Individuals and families embrace many customs that serve as the script for commemorating year-end holidays.

Some celebrants may adhere to traditions without really knowing how they began or why they continue. Here is a closer look at some of the most popular traditions tied to New Year’s Eve, both domestically and around the world.

Drinking champagne

The use of champagne for celebrations is rooted in the Christian ritual of consuming wine during the Eucharist. In the year 496, a wine from the Champagne region of France was offered during the baptism of the Frankish warrior Clovis, according to the Champagne Committee of France. It then became customary for champagne to be used at religious events like consecrations and at coronations or soirees.

Eventually the tradition became associated with

secular rituals, such as celebrating the new year.

Food People of Japanese heritage might eat soba noodles on New Year’s Eve. The Toshikoshi Soba, which means “year crossing buckwheat noodle,” denotes the crossing from one year to the next. Nibbling the noodles represent traveling from one year to the next as well as letting go of the previous year’s regrets.

In Spain, people gobble grapes to bring good luck in the coming year. The

goal is to eat 12 green grapes during the 12 remaining seconds until the New Year. Those able to do so will have 12 months of good fortune.

Dropping the ball Revelers have long watched the giant ball drop in New York City’s Times Square in person and on television. This tradition may be rooted in the custom of sailors using “time balls” to set their own timepieces while at sea. These chronometers were employed by using a spyglass to scan the harbor looking for balls that were dropped into the water at certain times, PBS reports.

The first ball was installed in 1829 in Portsmouth,

England.

The Times Square ball was first used in 1907, according to the Times Square Alliance.

Making resolutions Historians trace the making of resolutions to the Ancient Babylonians.

Citizens made spoken resolutions during their new year festival known as “Akitu.” This ritual required making an oath to the sitting or new king.

Romans also swore oaths of loyalty to the emperor when the New Year started.

Fireworks and noisemakers Fireworks are a big part of celebrations and are not to be outdone on New Year’s Eve. Fireworks were invented in the

seventh century in China.

According to Anthony Aveni, an astronomer and anthropologist at Colgate University, the fireworks were designed to ward off evil spirits. In cultures around the world, fireworks, banging drums and other efforts were used to chase away spooky creatures, especially during the transitional period that is the passing of the new year. Today fireworks and noisemakers are employed not for scaring away spirits, but rather to add to the revelry.

New Year’s Eve traditions abound, and many of these annual customs have interesting origin stories.
