Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible. The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water, so no flooding can occur. The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. This organization has five service areas: Children & Youth, Family & Community, Senior & Nutrition Services, Vocational Services & Behavioral Health and Criminal Justice Services. Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they assist over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County.

EAC Network runs the New Path Treatment Center, which is an outpatient clinic located in Hempstead. The center offers a recovery process in a safe and full-service treatment program for individuals with substance abuse disorders.

Approximately 22.7 million Americans need treatment for drug or alcohol-related problems, and many will not seek treatment due to the stigma and shame associated with substance use disorders. The New Path Treatment Center is a place where trained and compassionate counselors work tirelessly to assist people in need. They address not only substance use itself, but all of its contributing factors, including mental health, physical health, family systems, socialization, smoking cessation, legal issues and employment. A personal treatment plan is developed for each individual to address their speciﬁc needs.

is possible and is a life-long journey, we can help to reduce the stigma of substance use and mental health disorders. Our role at New Path is to assist individuals to achieve and maintain their recovery goals. ‘Give The Gift Of Life’ This Holiday Season By Donating Blood

With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage this holiday season, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invite residents to give the gift of life by donating blood on Thursday, December 15th, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life this holiday season through a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are

preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink ﬂuids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.

Councilwoman Walsh added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood at the Hicksville Athletic Center, is an incredible way for all of us to pitch in and give back during the holidays.”
