These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! Rain didn’t stop the annual Halloween parade at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on Oct. 31.

Students in kindergarten through third grade marched through the school as fourth and fifth graders, also in costume, lined the halls to cheer them on.

“Monster Mash” and the “Ghostbusters” theme song played over the speakers as children showed of their clever and creative costumes.

Staff members also wore themed outfits including fifth grade teachers who were the Harlem Globetrotters and special area teachers who dressed up as bumper cars.

More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless.

According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.

There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year.

That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran.

Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits.

So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Additionally, food donations are always welcome. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. Santa’s Mailboxes Have Arrived Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that children can send their ‘holiday wish list’ directly to Old St. Nick at the North Pole through a special network of Santa’s Mailboxes which arrived in Town facilities from the North Pole. Mailboxes will accept letters now through Monday, December 16th.

The Town of Oyster Bay will forward letters to Santa at the North Pole.

Letters received by Monday, December 16th with a legible name and return address will be answered

by Santa before the holiday.

No postage is necessary.

The event has become an annual tradition, with hundreds of runners participating in the 5K and Youth Fun Run. There will be bountiful refreshments, prizes and raffles at the finish line. The Youth Fun Run begins at 8:30am and the Adult 5K starts at 9:00am.

Students Bring Kindness To Seniors Students are spreading kindness beyond the walls of Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as they look to brighten the lives of others in their community.

On Oct. 25, third graders from Kimberly Kelly’s class visited the Parkview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Massapequa to present them with colorful seasonal

artwork.

Throughout October, students in Ms. Kelly’s class worked together with their peers in several others classes at Birch Lane to create falland Halloween-themed artwork. The completed pieces were affixed to large white paper, and Ms. Kelly, Assistant Principal Joyce Larkin and several students visited Parkview afterschool to

deliver the murals. Students were able to meet many of the seniors who will get to enjoy their work.

Ms. Kelly said that it was a schoolwide project as students from kindergarten through fifth grade contributed.

“Kindness is contagious,” Ms. Kelly said, “and the best way to spread it is to see the joy it brings to other people.”

Thanksgiving Cooking Safety Tips a turkey has become a go-to Thanksgiving tradition for some, due to the speed of deep-frying, the irresistible flavor, and the juiciness of the mean that results from this process,” Supervisor Saladino said. “While accidents caused by deepfryers are not common, when they do occur, they are harmful, can start a fire, and potentially can prove costly.”

To ensure safety over the Thanksgiving holiday, Supervisor Saladino and the Department of Public

Safety offer the following safety tips: *Keep outdoor fryers off decks, out of garages and a safe distance away from trees and other structures. *Make sure the turkey is thawed and dry before cooking. Ice or water that mixes into the hot oil can cause flare-ups. *Watch the weather.

Never operate a fryer outdoors in the rain or snow. *Place the fryer on a level surface, and avoid moving it once it’s in use.

*Leave at least 2 feet between the tank and the burner when using a propane-powered fryer. *Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid overfilling. Oil can ignite when it makes contact with the burner. *Choose a smaller turkey for frying. A bird that’s 8 to 10 pounds is best; pass on turkeys over 12 pounds. *Never leave fryers unattended. *Purchase a fryer with temperature controls, and watch the oil temperature

carefully. Cooking oil that is heated beyond its smoke point can catch fire. If you notice the oil is smoking, turn the fryer off. *Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the oil. Once the turkey is submerged, turn the burner on. *Wear goggles to shield your eyes, use oven mitts to protect your hands and arms and keep an “ABC” or grease-rated fire extinguisher close by. Do not to use water or a garden hose on a fire

related to turkey fryers. *Skip the stuffing when frying turkey, and avoid water-based marinades. *Keep children and pets away from the fryer at all times. *Once finished, carefully remove the pot from the burner, place it on a level surface and cover to let the oil cool overnight before disposing. *Opt for an oil-less fryer. This uses infrared heat, rather than oil, to cook the turkey.
