Emotional Resilience “Don’t promise when you’re happy, don’t reply when you’re angry, and don’t decide when you’re sad.” - Ziad K. Abdelnour What does it mean to be resilient? For some, it’s the idea of bouncing back quickly after adversity. For others, it is the ability to remain stoic. Some see it as simply ones’ ability to face another day.

My own definition may be counter-intuitive to some, but it is the courage to feel negative emotions, allowing the discomfort to effect you, grabbing the kernels of wisdom a negative experience brings, and then embarking upon the healing process and honoring whatever form it takes.

I think it is a gross human misconception that to cry, to punch a pillow, to feel hopeless, to declare that the world is coming to an end, or any other things you need to do in the midst of grief or profound disappointment, somehow makes you not emotionally resilient.

People have always observed me to be great at “bouncing back.”

What they don’t see is that I took the time I needed to be a complete mess! Yes, I said it. I take the time I need to honor the negative emotions, to give them their chance to have a field day. Then I dust myself off and move forward, feeling cleansed and renewed.

It’s all part of the process. It’s a myth that strong people don’t cry. Can we put that one to bed right now, please? Those heavier, denser emotions are part of the learning experience, and they are necessary. With that being said, so is stacking the deck in your favor toward healing.

Below is my cheat sheet for making it through tough, upsetting or scary times: Take a moment to STOP, look around and assess your immediate surroundings. Ask yourself if you are in any danger right in that moment. Chances are, the answer is no. Next, focus on 5 things you see around you.

Then focus on 3 things you can feel around you (tactile). Third, focus on one thing you can smell.

Fourth, focus on one thing you can hear.

Play classical or jazz music. I find that both of these genres of music have a soothing effect on the emotional part of the brain.

Picture yourself as a character in a movie. The people around you are the supporting players.

Think of the crisis before you as the script (the plot), and you as delivering the ultimate Oscarworthy performance. After all, life is a grand illusion anyway, and it is a safe bet to assume that you have starred in many other dramas, as well as some great comedies, in your lifetime.

Go do something you enjoy.

No matter how despondent you may feel, tell yourself you are going to take a short break from being “you,” and simply go do something enjoyable. Take a run, ride a bike, eat an ice cream cone, watch a funny movie, bake cookies, call an old friend, do something romantic with a significant other. I promise you, your problems can wait an hour.

Lastly, when you do bounce back, pay it forward and use that newfound wisdom to help someone else.

The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction.

Since their founding in 1995, they have reached almost 350,000 high school and college students, parents, coworkers and neighbors with lifesaving information on breast health, expanded their reach internationally, training their first breast health educator from outside the United States, annually educated over 200,000 people across the world on their website and trained breast health educators in local nursing programs, exponentially increasing their impact on Long Island.

This October, The Maurer Foundation has schedueld 132 breast health programs, reaching 3,300 people with life-saving information on breast selfexams, breast cancer risk factors, risk reduction, myths, facts, mammogram guidelines and more!

The purpose of the Development and Social Media internship is to assist the Development Department in creating a strategy to increase community awareness of the Foundation’s mission through an enhanced social media presence. The Massapequa High School girls varsity swim team hosted its annual Swim for a Cure meet on September 28th, at Syosset, for Pediatric Cancer Month. The Lady Chiefs collected items such as coloring books, crayons and small toys to be donated to the pediatric cancer unit at Cohens Children’s Medical Center.

They also held a 50/50

raffle for breast cancer awareness, which will be go toward the Massapequa School District’s Dig Pink initiative.

The swimmers raised more than $400 and a table full of items during their Swim for a Cure endeavor with the help of their opponent and friends from Garden City Swim and Dive team.

The outdoors served as the classroom as young meteorologists at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus conducted a surface observation. On Oct. 16 and 17, students in meteorology classes went outside to observe weather conditions and take measurements.

Led by science teacher Nicholas Donohue, students had to record information about the temperature, dew point, wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure, precipitation, visibility and cloud cover.

They used instruments

such as mercury-based thermometers and barometric altimeters to take measurements, along with their own observations.

Students learned that they had to include data about their location such as the elevation, latitude and longitude before beginning. They also figured out how to overcome some obstacles, such as determining visibility in a place surrounded by homes and trees.

After taking some measurements on the back field, students traveled to

the flag pole to observe wind conditions. They used the flag to determine wind direction and figured out estimated wind speed by looking at objects that were moving from the wind and comparing it to a Beaufort Scale. Students were able to look up live weather data from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, just a few miles away, to verify their own readings.

Meteorology is a science elective offered for ninthgraders. Students followed up on their surface observations by returning to the classroom to analyze their data.

Dear Friends, As I am preparing this month’s newsletter, I am eagerly awaiting the change of the seasons, which has apparently just begun. With the Fall upon us, that means the beginning of holiday planning and more special events. That being said, it’s very exciting to be able to update you on what’s new at our Chamber.

Our first Multi-Chamber Networking Event was held at the Bristal with great attendance and enthusiasm.

Susan Martin, who chairs the Networking Committee, promises to bring us more opportunities to meet and mingle with our business colleagues and develop new relationships to help us grow our businesses. A special thank you to the Bristal at Massapequa for making their beautiful facility available to our membership, and especially Executive Director Jennifer Amarante for all of her assistance in organizing this great event.

In addition, our Businessperson of the Year, Karen Gawrych, was recognized this Friday at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Our Board of

Directors proudly joined with the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce to celebrate Karen’s many accomplishments - both in her work with Mary Kay and as a volunteer on our Executive Board.

Congratulations again to Karen on this welldeserved honor.

Our next General Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 25th at 12:00 Noon at the Corner Galley Restaurant. The Corner Galley is a regular lunchtime spot for many of our local residents, so we do hope that you will be able to take a break during the day to join us.

At the meeting, we will be discussing our upcoming Food and Toy Drives. As you may know, each year our friends and neighbors support the Chamber’s efforts to provide food and toys for the children and families of our community. Your support of this effort helps us to brighten their holiday season in a way that has such lasting impact. If you are interested in displaying a food or a toy box in your business, please call Shelley in the Chamber office at 516.541.1443 and she will arrange to have the donations picked up and dropped off at our local pantries. Our hope is to brighten the holidays for those in need.

Parenting, like any other skill, is something we learn, and learning “on the job” can be frustrating.

As parents, we become confused when, after constant repetition of the same theme, children still do not respond.

YES Community Counseling Center and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition will host the Active Parenting NOW program, for parents of children in grades K-6, at the Massapequa Public Library, Bar Harbour Building, from 7:15pm – 8:45pm, for six consecutive

Tuesdays beginning November 13th through December 18th. The cost of the program is $40 per family for the entire series, including a workbook.

The reduced fee is made possible thanks to the support of Senator John Brooks.

Active Parenting NOW is designed to equip parents with new skills and enhance the ones they already have, in order to face the challenges of parenting. The video-based parent education series will address how parents can improve communication

with their children; teach responsibility and other important values; handle problems as they arise; defuse power struggles; and cope with difficult topics such as drugs, bullying and sex. The program also advises parents on how to stimulate independence as children grow older and encourage kids to be their best.
