The Long Island division of Douglas Elliman Realty, one of the largest residential brokerage companies in the nation, has partnered with The American Cancer Society to help in the fight against breast cancer.

As part of the organization’s annual, year-long initiative Real Men Wear Pink, agents from Elliman branch offices across Long Island have volunteered as Campaign Ambassadors to raise awareness and money in the fight to end breast cancer. Since its inception in 2013, Real Men Wear Pink has raised more than $40 million.

The brokerage’s involvement began in 2021, when Carlos Salinas, an agent in the Smithtown office, became the first Douglas Elliman Real Men Wear Pink Campaign Ambassador. Salinas found great joy in helping to make a difference and shared his experience with Ann Conroy, CEO of Douglas Elliman’s Long Island division. Inspired by Salinas, Conroy encouraged each Long Island branch office to establish a Campaign Ambassador for 2022. With more and more agents signing on, the Elliman team has raised more than $131,000 toward its $200,000 goal—and with plenty of fundraising

events yet to happen before year’s end.

“When I came to Douglas Elliman last year, my goal was to be one of the very best agents in the company while also giving back philanthropically,” said Salinas. “What better cause is there than to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The support of both Ann Conroy and Katy Cardinale, Branch Manager of Douglas Elliman’s Smithtown office, has been monumental in my efforts of raising awareness through Real Men Wear Pink and The American Cancer Society.”

Salinas, who has raised almost $10,000 to date, is set to participate in a large fundraising and networking event on Tuesday, October 18th at Prato 850 in Commack, with all revenue benefiting the Real Men Wear Pink Campaign.

Michael Furino, another philanthropic agent with Douglas Elliman’s Franklin Square office, has dedicated himself to serving as a Campaign Ambassador.

“I started my own charity about 10 years ago, through which I have raised over $1,000,000,” said Furino.

“When I was presented with the opportunity to become involved with Real Men Wear Pink, I was immediately excited,

since I was confident in my ability to organize great events and raise significant funds. It’s been a great experience for me to be a Campaign Ambassador for many reasons, including getting to know other agents in my office on a deeper level—some of them have even had personal experiences battling breast cancer.”

Furino, who has raised almost $20,000 to date, will host a Vegas Night fundraiser on Thursday, October 20, at Chateau Briand in Carle Place.

Douglas Elliman Realty has long been deeply committed to giving back to the local communities it serves and supporting important causes nationwide through its philanthropic initiative, Elliman Cares.

Fall Frenzy Auction

Plans are well underway for Dominican Village’s annual Fall Frenzy Auction (formerly known as the Chinese Auction Extravaganza).

There will be countless raffle baskets with separate raffles for “gold prizes” including flat-screen TVs, designer handbags/wallets, lottery trees, gift cards, and more. The event will also include a wine grab raffle.

Register early for the dinner auction to be held Friday, November 4th from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. located on the grounds of Dominican Village in the Helen Butler Hall. The general public is invited to view and submit raffle chances on Thursday, November 3rd, and on the same day of the main event, from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Helen Butler Hall. Winners need not be present.

It takes several months for a group of exceptional volunteers to coordinate, wrap, and record the many baskets for raffles, so we

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

Every summer, HKS hosts Camp Helen Keller, a program for children who are blind, have low vision are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss. The camp seeks to improve participants’ self-esteem, selfconfidence and socialization skills. It’s held at the LIU Post campus in Brookville and admits campers from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, who attend free of charge and receive door-to-door transportation, also free of charge.

“Everyone here is the same,” says Ellie Gallagher, a 10-year-old camper from Freeport, NY. “Here we all have some kind of visual disability, so no one feels different. And it’s a lot of fun.” Campers participate in traditional activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, as well as field trips and technology

classes that have been adapted for individuals with low vision.

Every year, the camp organizes a show on the last day of the one-month program to celebrate the campers’ achievements, show parents and friends what campers have been doing and to say goodbye to old and new friends. This year, show-stopping performances included dance routines to favorite songs including “Rainbow Connection” “The Theme From Cheers” and singing performances by select campers.

“It’s such a confidence boost for her,” says Ellie’s mom, Jennifer. “She looks forward to seeing the same friends every year. The activities she experiences lets her know she’s just like every other kid and can do just about anything.”

Additionally, October is month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways, including World Sight Day on October 14, White Cane Day on October 15 and the entire month designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. It’s important to accept people of all abilities, from all walks of life, and this nonprofit does just that.

NMFD To Host The Annual Rag-A-Muffin Parade

The North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) will be hosting its Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade on Sunday, October 30th. The event will start at 12 noon at United Skates of America (1276 Hicksville Road), travel north on Hicksville, and conclude at the Hagedorn Little Village School adjacent to the North Massapequa Fire Department’s Station 2 on Hicksville Road. There will be no rain date. All children who participate must be registered to be eligible for free prizes.

“The Rag-A-Muffin

Parade is always special,” explained NMFD Chief Mark J. Frascella. “For nearly five decades we have hosted this outstanding event, which has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young people. Our department is extremely proud of this event and I know our residents are looking forward to enjoying many more years of the Rag-A-Muffin Parade.”

The event is always held just prior to Halloween, which provides some extra atmosphere to an event

already charged with excitement. “It’s a great day for the children,” Chief Frascella said. “Kids can wear costumes before Halloween to make sure they’re ready for trickor-treating. After the costume parade they’re sure to be excited with the prospect of winning a bicycle or another great prize at the awards ceremony.”

RESCHEDULED To 10-22-2022 Due To Inclement Weather Beyond The Badge NY’s Outrun The Stigma Of Suicide & Mental Health 5k Run/Walk

New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso and the Village of Massapequa Park announce Beyond the Badge NY’s first annual Outrun the Stigma 5K Run/Walk in remembrance of all law enforcement officers who have died by suicide and to encourage those officers who are struggling with their mental health to come forward and seek the treatment they rightfully need and deserve. This event is dedicated in memory of NYPD Officer Richard Catapano Jr. who died by suicide in August 2020.

The race will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022, with a Kids Fun Run and the 5K Run/Walk start time of 9:00 a.m. beginning in the Village of Massapequa Park Municipal Lot 1.

All proceeds of this event will allow Beyond the Badge NY to assist numerous departments,

to help boost morale and officers’ mental health, assistance for families after a suicide, grief groups, seminars for officers, events and other costs associated with awareness and prevention.

The 3.1-mile course will start on a closed road and quickly enter the scenic Massapequa Preserve after a few hundred yards. Once in the preserve, runners will spend about half the race on dirt/gravel trails, and half on a paved trail. Runners will again exit the preserve onto the roadway for a few hundred yards to the finish line. Race medal to all participants. Awards to the top 3 male and female overall runners. “I would like to thank Beyond the Badge NY for all the great work they do in bringing awareness to the mental health struggles of our law enforcement and first responders,” said Durso. “It is of utmost

Free Family Fall & Halloween Festival

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Family Fall & Halloween Festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 22nd, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, located at 451 Unqua Road in Massapequa.

“This festival is a great opportunity for residents

to celebrate Halloween and the fall season with activities that are fun for residents of all ages,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Families are sure to enjoy all that the festival has to offer, including pumpkin picking and our popular Halloween hayride. Remember, costumes are encouraged!”

The Family Fall & Halloween Festival will

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Historic Hudson Valley recently announced the return of The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, a 28-day immersive, family friendly Halloween experience, set on Long Island’s historic 19th century village at the beloved Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Blaze: Long Island began on September 30, 2022 and runs through November 6, 2022. For tickets and event dates, visit www.pumpkinblaze.org. Advance ticket purchases are required.

Historic Hudson Valley, which develops and produces the event, is a not-for-profit education organization that owns and operates National Historic Landmarks in New York’s Sleepy Hollow region. Proceeds from ticket purchases will support the education and preservation of Old Bethpage Village Restoration and Historic Hudson Valley.

Long Island’s Largest Halloween Event, The Great Jack O’lantern Blaze Returns To Old Bethpage Village Restoration

“I want to thank Historic Hudson Valley for bringing its highly successful Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze to Nassau County again this year,” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. “This will be the third time Long Islanders will be able to enjoy this breathtaking, magical exhibit, the largest of its kind and an event that draws tens of thousands of residents from across Long Island.”

A tremendous artistic production, noted Creative Director Michael Natiello, who has appeared on The Martha Stewart Show, The Rachael Ray Show, The Today Show and HGTV, and whose carvings have been featured in the New York Times and People Magazine, leads a 25-person production team to produce Blaze: Long Island. Lead Carver, Carol Hough, who resides in Massapequa, and Artistic Carver, Rocco N. Lanzilotta of Westbury, will guide and direct Blaze:

Long Island’s 15 artisans, who hand-carve 7,000 jack o’lanterns which will be displayed in elaborate pumpkin sculptures throughout the event.

About Old Bethpage Village Restoration

Old Bethpage Village Restoration is a living history museum owned and operated by Nassau County that provides guests the opportunity to step back in time to the island’s agrarian past. The Village, which hosts the Long Island Fair in September, consists of homes, barns and other buildings dating back to 1765. Costumed interpreters describe life as it was in the 19th century and historic trade smiths demonstrate various trades.

2022 Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival At Hempstead Lake State Park

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit are pleased to announce the Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival will be held at Hempstead Lake State Park, on Saturday, October 15, from 10:00AM

– 4:00PM

The fishing license requirement for all anglers over the age of 16 is suspended for this festival and admission and parking are free. Festival activities include fishing instruction, casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish cleaning services to all participants. A “Casting for Pumpkins” event for children will be provided by the Seaford Knights of

Columbus. Activities are provided by I FISH NY and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Corporate sponsors include Renewal by Andersen of Long Island, New York Life and Veolia.

Prior to the festival, South and McDonald Ponds will be stocked with hundreds of brook and rainbow trout. The high concentration of stocked

trout should provide a great opportunity to introduce your family to the wonderful sport of freshwater fishing.

loved ones lost, while raising awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. “Thanks in large part to the decades of work and the dollars raised, a breast cancer diagnosis does not come without hope, and the breast cancer journey is not one that has to be traveled alone,” says Brittany Lawton, Associate Director, Development.

This year, female breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with more than 287,000 women diagnosed. Men are also impacted by breast cancer, with an estimated 2,710 men expected to receive a diagnosis in 2022.

Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.
