In recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announce a “Put Bullying on Ice” Awareness Day. The event will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage on Saturday, October 7th from 2:45pm – 5:45pm during the public skate session. Free admission and skate rentals are offered for all students and families who reside in the Town of Oyster Bay. The concessionaire at the Ice Skating Center will offer a 25% discount for all purchases.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of

Oyster Bay is proud to raise awareness and enhance dialogue among children about the dangers associated with bullying while recognizing the need for education and commitment to prevent this type of behavior. Together, we will Put Bullying on Ice and strengthen the bonds of

our community.”

“Together as a community, we will unite for acceptance while pledging to create a kinder world without bullying,” added Councilwoman Walsh. “When we stand together, no one stands alone. That’s why the Town of Oyster Bay, Long Island Coalition Against Bullying,

Long Island Crisis Center, New York Islanders and the Take Me Out to the Ballgame Foundation are partnering to put bullying on ice.”

Volunteers Needed For Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola invite residents to participate in an Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, September 30th at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay near the gazebo. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Bay, this event offers volunteers – individuals, families, companies and organizations – an opportunity to give back to the environment by removing litter and debris from the shoreline. Certificates are available upon request for students seeking to fulfill volunteer requirements.

“This is a great opportunity to roll up your sleeves, giveback to Mother Earth, and have fun while learning

more about our local marine life and environment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “I hope to see you at the Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup.”

Volunteers are invited to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 9am to 12pm. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo off of Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay. Additional cleanup locations include Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville, however, all volunteers should check in at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park. Typically, in year’s past, harbor and beach cleanup events have resulted in 40,000lbs of debris being collected by volunteers and

town workers.

Councilman Labriola stated, “Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Allowing this litter to remain on our shorelines will only lead to increasingly worse damage for the environment. We thank you in advance for participating in this event.”

By wearing blue and writing thank-you letters, students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District honored their community’s protectors on Sept. 15. The school celebrated Thank a Police Officer Day, recognized across the county every September.

There were classroom discussions about the roles of police officers, from keeping people safe to providing life-saving care. The conversations were engaging, informative and insightful, as many students have parents and other family members in law enforcement.

The focus of the second grade social studies curriculum is community, so students listened to a reading of “The Police Are Part of Our Community” in Colleen McCree and Gabriella Fielding’s second grade class. They talked about how police officers can help in different scenarios.

The second graders have also been learning how to

write friendly letters. With students throughout the school penning letters to officers at the Nassau County Police Department’s 7th Precinct, they were able to use this new knowledge.

First graders in Vanessa Apfelbaum’s class also devoted some time to writing thankyou letters with personalized messages of gratitude. She

read “Officer Buckle and Gloria” to students about an officer who gives school safety presentations along with his police dog. Thank a Police Officer Day was also a fitting end, Ms. Apfelbaum said, to a week in which students learned about different American heroes.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined Councilman Tom Hand and Councilman Steve Labriola to celebrate the Massapequa Mustangs Football Opening Day. The Mustangs kicked off their 65th season of great sportsmanship, teamwork, and of course, football. Also in attendance was New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso and Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy.
