Fall 2022 Toddler Arts & Crafts Program
The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 6 weeks in duration, beginning October 18th, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on: Tuesdays at 10am for two-year olds and 11am for three-and-four-year olds at the Hicksville Athletic Center in Hicksville; Wednesdays at 10am for two-year olds and 11am for three-and-four-year olds at the Ice Skating Center Community Room in Bethpage; and Thursdays at 10am for two-year olds and 11am for three-and-four-year olds at the Ice Skating Center Community Room in Bethpage. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that registration will be opening soon for the Town’s Spring Youth Dek Hockey League both online and in person. The league is open to boys and girls ages 6-12, and will begin on Monday, September 12th. Dek hockey is a variation of traditional ice hockey, where the games are played without skates on the ‘dek’ of an ice rink after the ice has melted away for the season. The season will feature 10 games, weekly practices, and an end-ofseason playoff competition. Openings are also available for Dek Hockey coaches for the fall 2022 season.
“Boys and girls who are enrolled in the Town’s Youth Dek Hockey League will have a great opportunity to not only improve their hockey skills, but to also learn important life lessons such as good sportsmanship and teamwork from our talented coaching staff,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This is a great activity for youngsters, whether they have experience in hockey or are just learning and are interested in playing hockey for the first time.”

New Teachers Given Tools To Succeed Ms. Wachter and Dr. Brennan welcomed back several new Massapequa High School graduates. Photo courtesy of the Massapequa School District Massapequa’s newest educators gained the knowledge they need to succeed as teachers, to lead their students to success, during a four-day orientation program. The Massapequa faculty members a variety of grade levels and subject areas at the elementary and secondary level. Some are coming with previous teaching experience and others are right out of college with education degrees. They all came together on the morning of Aug. 23 for the first day of new teacher orientation at McKenna Elementary School’s Teacher Learning Center.Board of Education President Kerry Wachter welcomed the new faculty members and reminded them to start each day by remember the reason they became teachers. Superintendent Dr. William Brennan added that the new teachers went through a rigorous hiring process and those at orientation represent “the best of the best.” Dr. Brennan had a few pieces of advice for the teachers as they begin their Massapequa careers. He encouraged them to learn from their colleague by asking questions and seeking out mentors. They should also develop strong relationships with students, establish good communication with parents, be flexible and reflective, and never forget they are a part of a team. New teacher orientation include an overview of instructional technology resources, special education and the district’s teacher center. During breakout groups, teachers learned about the district’s curriculum and instructional practices, and met with building administrators and department leaders.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced a Free Family-Fun Waterfront Festival and Concert will take place on Saturday, September 10th at TOBAY Beach Marina. In addition to the free concert featuring Jimmy Kenny and the Pirate Beach Band, the ultimate beach party tribute band to Jimmy Buffet, Kenny Chesney, and the Zac Brown Band, the day of free family fun will feature marine and outdoor exhibits, a children’s snapper derby, police boat demonstrations and much more! The festival will run from 11:00am to 3:00pm.
“The Town is thrilled to host this free familyfun Waterfront Festival and concert at beautiful TOBAY Beach Marina. This remembrance ceremony features music, religious readings, a light tribute, and a reading of the names inscribed on the Town’s 9/11 wall,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We will also unveil new names inscribed on the Town’s ‘Walls of Honor,’ recognizing those who gave the ultimate sacrifice due to 9/11 related illness.”
The Town’s 9/11 Memorialfeaturing a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center - is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11, 2001. The Walls of Honor monument expands each year with newly inscribed names of those who lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero.
