Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town officials welcomed members of the Championship 12U Massapequa International Little League Softball Team as they returned home from the Little League World Series! A celebratory community parade is being planned to celebrate the girls in this historic achievement, as they are New York’s first softball team to be named World Series champions.

Turning the Village of Massapequa Park Purple in honor of those we have lost, supporting those struggling with the disease of addiction and those in recovery.

Drug Free Long Island, Thomas’ Hope Foundation and the Incorporated Village of Massapequa Park have partnered to host events supporting advocacy for the disease of addiction. To help residents looking to obtain new passports, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announced that his office will offer a special onestop Passport Weekend on Saturday, September 9th and Sunday, September 10th from 9am to 3pm at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa.

“Residents looking to apply for a new passport are invited to visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive assistance,” said Town Clerk LaMarca. “We can help you with organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.”

Requirements for applying for a passport include:

One 2x2 color photograph with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background. Photos will also be available for $10 at both Town Halls North and South during Passport Weekend.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship – Previously issued undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, Naturalization Certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship.

Proof of Identity –Naturalization Certificate, Valid Driver’s License (cannot have been issued or renewed in the last six months), Current Government ID (city, state or federal), Current Military ID (military and dependents).

This service does NOT apply to Adult Renewals unless your Passport is expired for 5+ years.

Over A Dozen Restaurants Now Recycling Shells – More Urged To Join Environmental Efforts

Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that the Town’s shell recycling program, which is completing its inaugural year, has been a tremendous success through partnerships with local restaurants and food vendors. To date, over a dozen local restaurants participate in the program, and more are welcome to join.

“Through is innovative program, the Town seeks partnerships with local restaurants and other entities to collect oyster and clam shells from dinner plates and kitchen preparation tables,” explained Supervisor Saladino. “Town aquaculturists regularly pickup shells from local partners and deliver them to an environmental curing

facility. In just our first year, we’ve collected more than 20,000 pounds of oyster and clam shells, diverted that waste from landfills, and saved restaurants in their carting expenses. Once ready for deposit into waterways, the shells are strategically placed at the bottom of local Oyster Bay and Cold Spring harbors, helping to strengthen our local marine environment.”

Shellfish are essential mollusks in the local marine environment as they filter water through their feeding mechanisms. A single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of seawater per day, making shellfish Mother Nature’s most valuable marine cleansers. Studies indicate that by expanding shellfish populations in local harbors we can

improve water quality for generations to come. While this program helps the environment, it also helps restauranteurs toward achieving compliance requirements with the New York State Food Donation and Scraps Recycling Law while also reducing waste carting expenses.

Councilwoman Vicki Walsh added, “The Town’s Shell Recycling partner program brings the entire community together to help restore shellfish populations in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbors by providing habitat for shellfish and other marine species, improve water quality, and restoring local food supply. It’s a win-win for the community and our environment and we invite more restaurants to join

The Massapequa International Little League Softball Team Wins Big

The Massapequa International Little League Softball Team had a historic win in Greenville, North Carolina on August 13th, becoming the rst ever New York team to win at the Little League Softball World Series. This has been a long time coming and a dream that became a reality for the team who went undefeated throughout the tournament with 19 wins and 0 losses.

Their hard work and dedication are what led them to victory, along with their tight knit community amongst the team. “We trained like a professional team,” said Team Manager Rich Eaton. “We worked out ve days a week, two hours a day….they are the ones who want to practice, not the coaches forcing them to practice. That’s what makes this group so special.”

This is not only the rst time a New York team has a won in the World Series, but the rst time this team even made it to the tournament. Their 5-2 win is nothing short of historic.

It’s safe to say that the community is proud of the girls and have supported them along the way. Despite not being able to be at every game physically, community members gathered together for watch parties, supporting them from afar. They were cheered on excitedly as they arrived at a Homecoming Celebration at Brady Park on August 14th.

The celebration for these young victors is just getting started, with a local parade still to come on August 25th! Congrats, team!

Receiver Pravato Advises Late General Taxpayers Of Last Chance

To assist property owners who missed the August 10th deadline for paying their 2023 General taxes, Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes

Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that they can still pay the bill August 31st with the State mandated 2% late payment penalty while avoiding additional interest and fees from accruing on their property.

Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at (516) 624-6400 if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after August 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West

Street, Mineola, New York 11501.

In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver Pravato advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at (516) 571-2090 to determine the amount due. They may also

visit the Nassau County Treasurer’s Office at 1 West Street in Mineola.

Receiver Pravato noted, “Taxpayers in the Town of Oyster Bay are already paying some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and I want to make sure that our residents do not pay more out of pocket than they have to.”

Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park) recently hosted his 2nd Annual free veterans’ pancake breakfast and resource fair honoring area veterans and active military members for their service and sacrifice.

Along with a free breakfast, the event brought together numerous government agencies and local organizations that offer support and services to the veteran community including Nassau County Vet Center, Wounded Warrior Project, Long Island State Veterans Home, New York State Parks and Recreation, Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency, New York State Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Vets to Vollies, VetDogs, and so many more.

Jazz Greats Honored At Pinelawn

Special Tribute Celebrates Legendary Jazz Musicians Laid To Rest At Pinelawn

John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, and Guy Lombardo were honored on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum during a special musical tribute celebrating the legendary jazz greats laid to rest on the property. Guests attended the free event which was the first tribute Pinelawn has ever organized to honor the legendary jazz musicians. The noted Silver Arrow Band, which has performed around the world and with award winning musical artists including Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Herbie

Hancock & Quincy Jones will perform for guests, under the stars, in Pinelawn’s Louis Natalie Mall, home to many Pinelawn events.

“A very special evening was planned where, for the first time, we honored the extraordinary jazz musicians who are resting peacefully at Pinelawn. Each musician has significantly contributed to the history of jazz and 20th century music and we were honored and humbled to share this history with the community,” said Justin Locke, President, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum.

About the Jazz Musicians

John Coltrane was a 20th century iconic American jazz saxophonist, bandleader, composer and musical giant. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz. John Coltrane died on July 17, 1967 at Huntington Hospital, Huntington, Long Island.

Count Basie, born William James Basie, was an American jazz musician and American institution that personified the grandeur and excellence of jazz. Count Basie is considered one of the

greatest bandleaders of all time. He was the arbiter of big-band swing, establishing swing as a lasting music style. The legendary Count Basie Orchestra still performs today. In 1924, Count Basie moved to New York City. Count Basie died on April 26, 1984.

Lloyd Trotman was known as the “sideman to the stars,” an American jazz bassist who performed alongside noted jazz, R&B, Dixieland and rock artists including Duke Ellington, Ben E. King and the Platters. He resided in Huntington, Long Island between 1962 and 2007.

Lloyd Trotman died on October 3, 2007.

Guy Lombardo, born Gaetano Alberto Lombardo, was a Canadian and American Big Band leader known for his festive approach to New Year’s Eve through his famous recording of Auld Lang Syne. He performed with the Royal Canadians charting yearly hits. Guy Lombardo lived in Freeport, Long Island on South Grove Street, later renamed “Guy Lombardo Way.” Guy Lombardo died on November 5, 1977.

Compassionate women and men—both breast cancer survivors and non-breast cancer survivors—are being sought as volunteers. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is a non-profit that has been advocating and supporting the community for 43 years. I am recently retired and wanted to do something to help people coping with breast cancer. I wish when I

was diagnosed I had known about the hotline where there were others who had “been there.” Someone to tell me “take a breath, I’m here for you. I know what you are feeling.” I have done several library outreaches and am involved with our new book club.

I received so much support when I called the hotline that I want to provide that kind

of help to others. I do peer support for two women— linking one woman recently diagnosed to resources and speaking with the mother of someone diagnosed with breast cancer who was having a hard time. I’ve also lobbied in Albany for more funds for the program.

Overdose Awareness Day Candlelight Ceremony

Ceremony Planned To Honor Loved Ones Lost To Overdoses

In recognition of National Overdose Awareness Day, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board will partner with Drug Free Long Island, along with the Village of Massapequa Park and Thomas’s Hope Foundation, to host an Overdose Awareness Memorial Service on Thursday, August 31st at 6:30pm at Brady Park in Massapequa Park. Resource tables will be available for families from 6:30pm – 8pm, and a 7:15pm memorial service will be held in memory of those who have lost friends and family to overdose.

Following the memorial service, a candlelight vigil walk will take place from Brady Park to Village Square.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “It is so important that we gather to raise awareness of the deadly effects of heroin and remember our loved ones who lost their lives to the opioid epidemic. Residents are invited to bring a photo of their loved one to the ceremony.”

Drug Free Long Island will supply a large dreamcatcher in which residents can place a picture of a loved one lost and/or card in their memory. For more
