Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me.

This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend.

Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey

or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always.

I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress.

For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish.

My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful.

Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the

particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me.

And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. I look forward to reading your thoughts, and to taking you on my journey as I continue to contribute columns from time to time to my own personal website, SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. ’Til next time, may tomorrow’s birthday be just the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

Danielle Kennedy, an educator in the Massapequa School District for the last 18 years, has been named the executive assistant to the principal at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, which houses ninth grade. She replaces Tania Willman, who was appointed as principal of Ames.

She served as a parttime attendance officer in the 2011-2012 school year and was Berner’s social studies department assistant from 2012 to 2018. Additionally, she was the co-adviser of the National Junior Honor Society for the past two years, the summer school assistant principal in 2016 and 2017, and the summer school principal this year.

Massapequa High School teacher Richard McNeil was awarded a 2018 James Madison Memorial Fellowship. He was one of 52 teachers from across the country to receive the financial award from the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation.

Mr. McNeil has been a special education social studies teacher in Massapequa for 11 years, including four years with the Wing program, which offers small-class settings and additional guidance for students. He teaches 10thgrade global history, 11thgrade U.S. history and 12th-grade economics and

at St. John’s University with a major in American government and minor in comparative politics, and will also be required to complete the summer 2019 semester at Georgetown University.

The fellowship is funded by income from a trust fund in the Treasury of the United States and from additional private gifts, corporate contributions and foundation grants.

The award is intended to recognize promising and distinguished teachers, to strengthen their knowledge of the origins and development of American constitutional government.

“The Madison Fellowship Foundation requires that I complete five years as a U.S. history teacher, and I am more than happy to meet that requirement,” Mr. McNeil said. “My goal in acquiring the fellowship has always been so that I may pass on a better understanding of the U.S. Constitution to my students. This award has my name on it, but I could not have reached this goal without the support of my wife, my children and my colleagues in the special education department.”

Campers to Leaders learn guitar and hopefully they continue with it,” Charlie said.

Juniors Juliet Hartz and James Kelly both attended the summer musical theater classes when they were younger. Juliet came back as a student assistant for theater, while James returned to work with the beginner and advanced level orchestra classes.

“I learned so much from the camp that I thought it would be nice to teach the kids what I learned,” said Juliet, in her first year working at the camp.

She helped students learn their dance numbers for a performance for family members at the end of each session.

James, who plays the viola in the school

orchestra, was a camp assistant for the second year. After the music teachers completed their lessons, he worked with students in small groups to help them further develop their skills.

Talia Cartafalsa, an incoming junior, was the assistant to Summer Fine Arts Coordinator Jessica Wyman in her first year at the camp. When she was younger, she participated in visual arts classes such as ceramics and jewelry making.

Her responsibilities included paperwork, distributing invitations for the weekly performance and exhibits, and giving out T-shirts to the participants.

Many high school students also worked with

the five-week Summer Recreation Program.

Separate camps were held for children from each of the six elementary schools.

Unqua Elementary School graduates and Massapequa High School juniors Kylie Dragonetti and Kevin McLeer both worked their third summer as counselors.

Both of them attended the program for seven years before becoming leaders.

“I love working with kids,” said Kylie, who works with fourth-graders.

“I remember how much fun I had here, and I want to make sure they have fun, too. I get to relive memories I had when I was younger.”

Kevin, who works with incoming kindergartners, said in addition to supervising the children, he teaches them skills they will need to be successful in school like sharing and playing fair.

“We know how the kids look up to us,” he said.

“We have to be good role models.”

Student assistants play an important role in the Massapequa School District’s various summer programs by assisting the adult leaders and providing guidance to their young peers. Many of the high school-age assistants were once campers themselves.

At the Summer Fine Arts Camp at Massapequa High School, student assistants provide support in music, art and musical theater classes. Incoming 10thgrader Charlie Collins worked in the acoustic guitar class from July 30thAugust 3rd, after taking the class as a child. He helped the young musicians learn how to play the right notes and chords and practice the songs they learned.
