According to the Center for Disease Control, since COVID, there has been an increase in opioid overdose deaths with the number

of deaths reaching over 100,000 in the United States.

Nassau County Police report an increase in the number of opioid overdose death from 140 in 2019 to 223 in 2020.

The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised.

This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible.

The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® New York Metro www. rmhcnym.org Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) New York Metro is a 501c3 non-profit organization that keeps families seeking medical treatment for their sick children near the care they need and the families they love.

Ruth Signorelli of Sayville, NY has volunteered with RMHC at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for the last two-plus years, pushing the colorful “Hospitality à la Carte” cart, delivering much-needed toiletries, snacks, games, books and toys to parents and children in their hospital room. Always arriving at “just the right time”, the volunteers and treats on the cart give an added boost of joy to the day!

Currently, RMHC is looking to fill 100 volunteer positions, in New Hyde Park at Cohen’s Children Hospital and in Stony Brook at the Children’s Hospital there. Do you think you’d be a great volunteer?

Durso Announces Summer Reading Challenge The New York State Assembly’s 2022 Summer Reading Challenge is here, and Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park) is encouraging students in New York and across Long Island to participate.

Assemblyman Durso, in coordination with New York State libraries, is sponsoring this Summer

Reading Challenge to inspire kids to explore far-off worlds, discover new interests or learn new skills. Over one million children and teens participated in the Summer Reading Challenge last year and we are looking for more young individuals to join for this year’s theme “Oceans of Possibilities,”

celebrating all things water and oceanrelated.

“Summer break is a great time for kids to visit their local library and check out the exciting activities and books they have to offer,” said Durso. “I am encouraging and challenging my own kids and students in my district to continue

learning over the summer by picking up a book. Studies have shown that children who read over summer break retain information better, come to school ready to learn, and avoid the loss of learning known as the ‘summer slide’.”

After completing 40 or more days of reading and marking

each day on the given calendar provided by Assemblyman Durso, you return the completed form to the Assemblyman’s office and he will award your child with a New York State Assembly Excellence in Reading Certificate.

Seasonal Boat Slips Now Available At Robert Moses State Park East Marina The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that seasonal boat slips at the Robert Moses State Park East Marina are available for rent.

Interested boaters can obtain an application to reserve a slip by visiting the Robert Moses State Park Office.

The Robert Moses State Park East Marina has forty (40) boat slips, which are available from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. East Marina Seasonal slips will be available on a first come, first serve basis, and will be assigned by Robert Moses State Park. In the event the marina has reached capacity, you will be placed on the wait list.

A seasonal boat slip costs $50 per foot. Slips can accommodate vessels up to 40 feet long with a maximum beam of 14 feet. Each slip has potable water, two cleats, and electric hook-up. The power source is 50 amps (50/125). Boaters must supply their own ropes, adapters, and extension cords. Each slip includes

one vehicle parking permit. No overnight visitor parking will be permitted. Boaters who rent a slip during the 2022 season will automatically be renewed for the 2023 season.

Robert Moses State Park is located at the south end of the Robert Moses Causeway and can be reached by the

Ocean Parkway.
