Promoting Substance-Free Sporting Events
Massapequa Takes Action Coalition and Levittown Community Action Coalition worked together with Massapequa Police Athletic League (PAL) and Dek Superstars to develop signage on maintaining a substance-free sports arena. The signs read “Our athletes learn from you. Stay sober in the stands. This is an alcohol, marijuana, and vape-free space.”
The message was developed to better address substance use at public, community sporting events and encourage parents to model behavior for local youth. Both MTAC and LCAC operate with a mission to create healthy communities
through the prevention of youth substance use.
The community coalitions engage local organizations and residents to raise awareness of factors that protect our youth from substance use and minimize risk factors.
The message, “Our athletes learn from you. Stay sober in the stands,” is meant to remind parents that they are their children’s role models. According to MTAC Coordinator, Brooke Langella, “Consuming alcohol, marijuana, or tobacco while attending a children’s sport event removes the focus from the game and may normalize or even sensationalize
substance use in community settings.” Hannah Moore, LCAC Project Coordinator, adds “I think it’s important to ensure youth are the focus of sporting events and keep these areas as safe spaces in the community.”
PAL and Dek Superstars acknowledge that sports communities have the power to connect with parents and influence healthy decisions. “Our ideals are in line with the support of youth and our future,” says Sebastian Giarrantano, Dek Superstars Director.
LCAC and MTAC hope to spread this message to other sports fields and community spaces later this year.

PSEG Long Island’s Summer Food Collection Initiative
PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest Food Bank are kicking off PSEG Long Island’s third annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive initiative.
Continuing through Sept. 22 – the last full day of summer – collection drives will be set up at six supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate nonperishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Islanders facing food insecurity.
Online donations are being accepted throughout the campaign at psegliny.com/feedli. Island Harvest estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals.
“We created PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island as a way to provide a venue for people
to help people. In the past two years, hundreds of Long Islanders have donated online and brought bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food to our collection sites to support the initiative,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Our goal this summer is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals because there is still hunger in every ZIP code. PSEG Long Island is committed to playing an active role in improving the communities we serve. We are proud to partner with Island Harvest and our supermarket partners for the third year to help put food on the tables of families in our communities who need it.”
Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year.
During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and other programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate continue to strain local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.
“Island Harvest Food Bank is grateful to our valued partners, PSEG Long Island, for hosting the third annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection event to help address the critical shortage of food through the summer months for people facing food insecurity,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “With
school feeding programs halted for the summer break, families already struggling to make ends meet are faced with additional challenges, and the support of PSEG Long Island, Stop & Shop, and the generosity of their customers will help ease that burden.”
Members of the public are encouraged to come to the collection sites and donate nonperishable food items. Collection bins and a drive-thru, drop-off option will be available at each location.

Nonperishable food: Healthy varieties of canned foods, such as lowsodium beans, vegetables, soups, pasta sauces and tomato varieties, tuna and chicken, rice, pasta, nut butters, olive and canola oil, spices and pet food (no glass containers please).
Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.
Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, feminine care products and shaving products,
antibacterial wipes and washcloths.
Baby care items: Diapers, wipes, formula, creams, ointments and baby wash.
Additionally, information will be available from PSEG Long Island on electric service payment plans and programs, and ways to save money through energy efficiency options.

childhood cancer. The friends, Vinny and Jordan of Massapequa, approached the New York Blood Center to coordinate this drive as a way of supporting of other children battling the disease. The children are schoolmates at Schwarting
Elementary School in Plainedge. Vinny (front row, center left, shown with his family and Schwarting Principal Jennifer Thearle) is 11-years-old and was diagnosed with a rare tumor in his kidney. He completed 31 weeks of radiation and
chemotherapy, and has needed close to 30 blood and platelet transfusions. Jordan (front row, center right, shown with his family) is 10-years-old and was diagnosed with Leukemia. He will receive 2 ½ years of intensive chemotherapy
treatment.
“Jordan and Vinny are brave young men that despite their own health concerns, are putting others first by hosting this blood drive and collecting 175 pints of blood for cancer patients like themselves,” said Supervisor

Summer ‘Movies By Moonlight’ In Town Of Oyster Bay Parks
Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board announce that free ‘Movies by Moonlight’ will be offered in local parks on Thursday evenings this summer, through August 10th. Residents are welcome to bring blankets and chairs when attending these family-friendly movies.
“Residents and families looking for a fun night need look no further than their backyards this summer as the Town is ready with a summer to remember,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We’re thrilled to once again show family-friendly films at our local parks, along with character meet and greets, inflatables, free popcorn, food trucks, games, and more. Join us at these pop-up movie nights and sit back, relax and enjoy the show.”

Town To Host Blood Drive In Memory Of Massapequa Cancer Victim
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announce a partnership with New York Blood Center to host a Blood Drive in honor of Bridget McElroy, who lost her battle to cancer at just 35-years old. A regular blood donor herself, it was Bridget’s wish for her family and friends to donate blood in celebration of her birthday. The drive will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 from 10AM – 4PM at Marjorie Post Park Community Center, located at 451 Unqua Road in Massapequa.
“Bridget McElroy was an amazing young woman who lost her life to a rare form of cancer far too soon. Even during her darkest days, Bridget was
focused on helping others and requested that her family and friends give the gift of life by donating blood. Now that she’s sadly passed away, we’re continuing her legacy by hosting “Bridget’s Birthday Blood Bank,” a blood drive in her honor. Please join us in donating blood on August 19th,” Supervisor Saladino said.
In July of 2020, amid the growing COVID-19 pandemic, Bridget was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of soft tissue cancer. She was just 33 years old. Athletes Now And Later Connect At Massapequa Sports Camps
Massapequa’s next generation of studentathletes are getting an early start, and they are learning from the best. The district’s Summer Sports Camps,
which run from late June to the end of July, feature Massapequa High School coaches and athletes as instructors.
Youngsters can learn
skills for more than a dozen sports at the weeklong camps, which are mostly held at the high school campuses and Berner Middle School. Current varsity and
junior varsity athletes, as well as recent graduates, share their experiences. They teach rules of the game and strategies, while emphasizing sportsmanship and teamwork.
A girls volleyball camp for students entering grades 2-5 was held the first week of summer vacation, followed by camp for incoming sixth, seventh and eighth graders the week of July 10. Varsity head coach Amanda DelGiacco said that students rotated through different stations to learn blocking, hitting, passing, serving and setting, then put their skills into practice in games.
Rising senior Allison Petrullo, who will soon play her fourth year on the varsity volleyball team, attended the camp when she was younger and now is an
instructor.
“I love being able to help the little kids learn the sport,” she said, “and hopefully they find a passion for it.”
While the girls were bumping and setting in the high school gymnasium, a boys volleyball camp was taking place in the Berner gym. Varsity coach Elissa DiSalvo and assistant coach Nick Breslin, along with student instructors and volunteers, were teaching the same skills to boys entering grades 5-8.
“We pride our program on teaching them to be good teammates,” coach DiSalvo said.
Varsity player and rising senior Tristan Rezza hopes to pass on his knowledge of the sport to the middle school-age players. This is
his second year working at the camp.
“I love teaching the kids how to play volleyball,” he said. “I want them to develop a love for the game and continue to play it into their high school careers. Hopefully, one day, they can be in our shoes.”
The week of July 10 also featured a girls lacrosse camp at Berner and a boys lacrosse camp at the high school.
Varsity coach Erin Kollar and her student instructors taught the basics of the sport to girls as young as first grade. The skills included catching, cradling, defense, passing and shooting.
“The girls really enjoy working with the varsity players,” coach Kollar said.

“They seem them on the field during the season, and now they get to be with them on the field to learn from them. The young girls look up to the varsity players.”
Frankie Antonelli, who is entering fifth grade, plays lacrosse with local youth leagues and aspires to be a Massapequa varsity player. She said the instructors are very helpful and encouraging.
“I like to work on lacrosse because I’m passionate about it and I want to get better at it,” she said. “The instructors are really good lacrosse players. They’re really nice and good coaches.”
A speed and agility camp, open to high school-age boys and girls, meets three times a week for five weeks. It includes conditioning exercises on the field and weight training in the high school fitness center. Kevin
Shippos, varsity football coach, said it is open to all varsity and junior varsity athletes to prepare for the upcoming year, and focuses on exercises that they can do at home to stay in shape.
The baseball camp also meets for the duration of the five-week program due to its popularity. Varsity baseball players lead centers where the youngsters learn all the different aspects of the sports including hitting, pitching, fielding and baserunning.
Recent graduate Michael Vilardi, who was on the varsity team for three years and will play baseball for Queens College, said he enjoys working with the students who will someday be wearing Massapequa jerseys. As a former camper himself, being an instructor makes it feel like his baseball career has come full circle.
“I just want the kids to have fun,” he said. “If they walk out of here learning
just one thing, my job as a counselor is complete.”
Other sports camps this summer include basketball,
cheerleading, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics,
soccer, softball, track and field, and wrestling.
