Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience And Long Island Cares Join Forces To Combat Summertime Food Insecurity

Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience at Samanea New York (located at 1500 Old Country Road, Westbury, NY) is partnering with Long Island Cares (www.LICares.org) to help fight food insecurity during the summer through August 6.

Long Islanders who purchase a ticket and donate one bag of groceries (containing more than one item) will receive one complimentary ticket per ticket holder to the immersive event as a thankyou for their contribution.

“Long Island has warmly welcomed Beyond Van Gogh into their community since we opened in March, and we are proud to team up with Long Island Cares to give back,” said Justin Paquin, President, Paquin Exhibitions & Theatrical, Division of Paquin Entertainment Group. “Beautiful art can change

how we see the world, and through our partnership with Long Island Cares, hopefully, we can help make sure fewer children go hungry this summer.”

Long Islanders can drop the food donations into the exhibit’s Long Island Cares collection bins during the event. This food drive aims to alleviate food insecurity, specifically for children who may not have access to school meals during the summer break. experiences the sights and sounds of this incredible Van Gogh experience, they will come away feeling very good that they were able to help their neighbors in need.”

Acceptable donations include canned soups, tuna, vegetables, fruit, pasta packages, crackers, juice boxes, canned proteins, juice bottles, cereals, and granola bars. We welcome the generosity of our visitors and ask that they consider a donation of at least two or more items.

Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, produced by Paquin Entertainment Group, is on Long Island for a limited engagement. This immersive experience features more than 300 of Vincent Van Gogh’s

iconic artworks and takes the art lover into a threedimensional world that exhilarates the senses.

To help get the food drive started, King Kullen, ShopRite of Bay Shore and ShopRite of Massapequa

are each donating 250 pounds of food to help fill the collection bins that will be on site for four weeks.

Town To Host Empire State Ride Long Island To End Cancer

Jeff Pravato to announce the Town’s partnership with Empire State Ride Long Island to host Long Island’s largest charitable bike ride to benefit cancer research, scheduled for Saturday, July 22nd. Town officials were joined by Empire State Ride Founder Terry Bourgeois, Director of Thoracic Oncology and Clinical Research at the Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital Dr. Ashish Sangal, and Michael Seecharan, an inspiring lung cancer survivor who has participated in a clinical trial funded by events like the Empire State Ride.

“We are thrilled to once again partner with Catholic Health on Long Island and

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, to raise this important funding to support cancer research and clinical trials,” said Supervisor Saladino. “All course routes begin in downtown Oyster Bay and feature a ride through beautiful beaches, woodlands, and historic destinations – including Teddy Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill – in and around the Town of Oyster Bay’s exquisite north shore. With two wheels, our residents can change the world!”

The event features three course lengths for riders of all ages and ability. All routes will begin on Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay, by the historic Oyster Bay Post Office. For those who can’t cycle but wish to attend and support the event, downtown Oyster Bay will also host a street fair, hosted in partnership with the Oyster Bay Main

Street Association and Oyster Bay-East Norwich Chamber of Commerce –as local businesses will line the streets with food, live music and fun activities for families.

“By putting two feet forward and bicycling in this event, our community plays an important role in raising charitable funds to advance cancer research and treatment,” said Councilman Labriola. “I look forward to participating in the event myself and hope to see all our residents there on July 22nd!”

Registration is now open for this fundraising event with a $25 fee for each participant. Riders will commit to a fundraising minimum which is $200 for adults and $75 for riders under 18 for all routes. Strong Start Foreshadows A Bright Future For Massapequa Graduates

A large gymnasium at Hofstra University served as the gathering place for Massapequa High School’s Class of 2023, where they helped each other affix their hats and tassels, and snapped a few selfies. Soon, they were on the move, entering the neighboring Mack Arena as “Pomp and Circumstance” played.

It was the crowning moment for the graduates, a culmination of 13 years of school that gave them a few twists and turns along the way.

“They showed me how to make the best out of their experience at Massapequa High School,” said Principal Barbara Lowell, who started with them at the sprawling Merrick Road campus in 2020, and watched them overcome pandemic restrictions to succeed academically and get actively involved in student life.

She explained that one of her first decisions as principal was selecting the color of their ID badge lanyards, which identifies students by grade. Ms. Lowell picked purple, and she soon realized that the color symbolized many attributes that define the Class of 2023 – bravery, creativity, imagination, loyalty and trust.

Superintendent Dr. William Brennan, addressing his first graduating class, noted that the Class of 2023 embodies the transformative power of a Massapequa education.

“I see that this class as the future leaders, innovators and change makers that this world is craving,” he said, adding that they need to “keep that fire to learn burning” because their will have careers that last until 2060 or later when jobs could look vastly different.

This year’s class of 482 seniors is graduating with a collective total of 5,600 college credits. They

also earned about $14 million in scholarships from the 127 colleges and universities they are attending next year. Ms.

Lowell also recognized a half-dozen students who will be entering the military, enrolling in a military institution or joining an ROTC program after high school.

Graduates heard from several of their peers including valedictorian James Bacheller, salutatorian Christina Fradella, general organization President Scott Palmer and Class of 2023 President Griffin Hunt.

James, speaking at the very university he will attend in the fall for an eight-year bachelor’s and doctorate program, said he was once told by his second grade teacher and elementary assistant principal that he might be the valedictorian someday. Not knowing what the word meant at the time, it still became a goal for him.

“Achieving this goal was not the work of one,” he said. “There is an adage, ‘it takes a village to raise

a child.’ I was supported by my family, teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, coaches and friends, all who shaped me. When we set out to conquer our dreams, we must realize they cannot be accomplished alone.”

Christina, who is headed to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also recounted some profound advice she received in her earlier years. Berner Middle School social studies teacher Maria Casale, who picked up on Christina’s anxiety about always wanting to get a good

grade, reminded her to enjoy life when signing her yearbook.

“It took me five years to fully understand her message,” Christina said. “She was trying to teach me about balance, and that constantly stressing about success and perfection was not a life. A life is having a balance of everything that you deem important.”

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that they are hosting the 45th Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament comprised of 6-player co-ed teams. This event will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2023 and will be held rain or shine. The tournament will begin at 9:00AM on the volleyball courts at Central Mall Field 4 at Jones Beach State Park. The first round of matches will be played as a round robin. All teams are guaranteed to play seven games. The top two teams from each round robin bracket will advance on to the quarterfinals which will decide the two final teams. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place teams. The 3rd and 4th place teams will receive merchandise prizes. Registration is FREE and is open until the roster is full. Players must be 14 years old or older to participate. Players of all skill levels are welcome to play and
