The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

As our nation celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, the team at America’s VetDogs will be nearing the completion of its latest two-week, in-residence training program at its Long Island campus, where another class of veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities will receive their life-changing and life-saving service dogs.
The non-profit organization trains and provides service and guide dogs for our nation’s heroes in all 50 states and beyond, all from their national headquarters in Smithtown. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the organization o ers assistance dogs for those with physical, emotional and other less apparent disabilities. The canines may serve as service dogs, guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs and military facility dog, amongst others. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months.
“The 4th of July is a time of celebration and, for us, it’s a time to remember the sacrifice so many of the people we serve made –and continue to make – to protect and defend our freedoms,” said John Miller, president and CEO, America’s VetDogs. “While our nation comes together at parades, ceremonies, and backyard parties to commemorate America’s independence, right here in Smithtown America’s VetDogs will be continuing our work to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and their own independence.”
It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one service or guide dog, yet the organization provides its services at absolutely no charge, including a lifetime of aftercare support for their graduates after they return home. However, none of America’s VetDogs’ mission can be accomplished without donors, sponsors and volunteers. Every e ort made from generous individuals is greatly appreciated and never goes unnoticed.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, members of the Town Board and Catholic Health are partnering to offer residents and nonresidents a Free Pool Safety Seminar on Friday, July 7, 2023 at SyossetWoodbury Park. Families are encouraged to attend as children under the age of 15 make up more than 78 percent of pool submersion injuries in the United States annually, with 67 percent of them including children under the age of three. Preregistration is not required for this event.
Supervisor Saladino stated, “Nothing is more important than the safety of our children, and to improve pool safety we offer this seminar to with the goal of saving lives through public education and awareness. We want you to have lots of fun in
the sun while always be prepared to respond to emergencies.”
Seminar attendees will learn from professionals about healthy swimming, basic first aid, hypothermia, cramping, drowning prevention, basic CPR (not certification), recreational water wellness and EMA ambulance education. A Fishbowl Tale
First graders had some special helpers to make fishbowl projects at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on May 24. They were joined by parents, grandparents and other guests for a spring craft.
Every grade at Birch Lane hosts a special persons day, in which students welcome
important adults for a collaborative project. First graders and their visitors got together in the cafeteria to make the large paper fishbowls. Their supplies include construction and tissue paper, glue, crayons and markers.
First grade teachers said that the purpose of the activity was about working
together. Each student and his or her special guest had a hand in crafting their fishbowl, literally. The projects contained tracings of two hands – one from the child and one from the adult. Teachers also added that the project connected to a recent science unit on animals and living things.

A New Book Club For Those Affected By Breast Cancer
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is starting a life-affirming book club called the Warriors Book Club that is open to anyone affected by breast cancer. The group will zoom on Monday, July 10, from 7 pm to 8 pm.
The first book to be read is “The Getaway Girls” by Dee MacDonald, a funny
romantic comedy about love, friends, family and self-discovery. Three very different women all agree it’s about time they had a holiday to remember…and they do as they set forth in Europe in a used recreational vehicle.
The Warriors Book Club is the brainchild of Adelphi Hotline Volunteer Lynne Borah from Plainview. Borah,
a 20-year breast cancer survivor, says “Reading is my favorite getaway,” which is why she decided to start the book club to help others escape from any difficulties they are having.

2023 Sandcastle Contest To Be Held At Hither Hills State Park
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 2023 Sandcastle Contest at Hither Hills State Park. The contest will be held each Thursday beginning June 29 through August 31, 2023 Sand sculptors may use sand, water, and any other natural materials native to the beach.
Prizes are provided by the Natural Heritage Trust, the program’s sponsor. Each week’s prizes will be awarded for the best sculptors and castles in several categories.
