The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness!

Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing.

This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes.

A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around.

While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment.

However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater

income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground.

She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years.

She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years.

Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals.

Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner!

Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.”

As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

According to the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor, adding square footage to a home can cost homeowners anywhere from $7,000 to $100,000. When adding square footage to a home, homeowners may need to knock down an interior wall or walls, the cost of which can vary widely depending on the walls being knocked down. Loadbearing walls are needed to support the home, and while such walls can be removed, homeowners may need to hire structural engineers at additional cost to orchestrate such removals. In addition, homeowners can expect to pay more when knocking down walls that contain ducts or electrical wiring.

It also can be costly for homeowners whose homes are old to knock down walls. HomeAdvisor notes that the wall-removal process in old homes that contain lead paint or lathand-plaster walls is more intricate and may cost homeowners more money.

Family is an important component of the fifth grade Spanish curriculum in the Massapequa School District and students at Unqua Elementary School recently reviewed for their final project. To wrap up the year, each student will create a family album in which they will write about family members and create

illustrations.

Third, fourth and fifth graders receive Spanish instruction twice a week through the district’s Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program. FLES teacher Luisa Marino led students in an interactive question game in which they practiced Spanish words

and phrases for different family relationships along with clothing, personality traits and physical characteristics.

Students traveled around the room and asked each other different questions, trading cards at the end, with the goal of collecting as many cards as possible by the end of the activity.

Black Hawk Pilot Visits Birch Lane Fourth graders got an exciting look into military aviation when Capt. Sal Garcia, a helicopter pilot in the National Guard, visited their classroom at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on June 11.

Summer Reading Challenge The Assembly’s 2019 Summer Reading Challenge is here and Assemblyman Mike LiPetri (R-Massapequa) is encouraging students in New York to participate.

Over 2.4 million children participated in the State Summer Reading Challenge last year and are looking for more young individuals to join for this year’s theme “A Universe of Stories.”

“Here at the New York State Assembly we’re encouraging and

challenging students to read over the summer,” said LiPetri. “Not only have studies shown that children who read over summer break retain knowledge better and come to school ready to learn, but also that they end up outperforming their peers that school year. Students can stop by my office to obtain a summer reading guide and begin the challenge.”

Free Sunscreen Available at Town Pools and Beaches

Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town will place sunscreen dispensers at local pool and beach facilities in advance of the summer season. This are being provided free-ofcharge for Town residents.

“Skin cancer is a national health issue, and prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light from the son is the leading

preventable cause of skin cancer,” Councilman Labriola said. “Through the introduction of 16 dispensers at various beach and pool locations, the Town will help residents find a convenient way to help prevent this chronic disease.”

Dispensers will be set up in cooperation with Syosset Hospital/Plainview Hospital-Northwell Health.

In addition to 16 dispensers, the Town will work with the health group to set up an awareness program for residents to help promote a mindfulness of the potential dangers of increased sun exposure.

Six Schools, One Special Concert The All Elementary Music Festival is a 63-year tradition in the Massapequa School District and 289 student musicians from all corners of the community showcased their talents on May 20.

Music teachers from the six elementary schools selected their top fourth and fifth grade musicians for the band, chorus and orchestra. They performed together during an evening concert in Berner Middle School’s gymnasium.

Each group had a set of three songs. The orchestra opened the show with

performances of “Tribal Dance,” “Canyon Sunset” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The concert then shifted to student vocalists, as choral members sang “Gonna Rise Up Singing,” “Children Will Run” and “Let Freedom Ring.”

It was then a return to instrumental music, with renditions of “All Aboard,” “Colliding Visions” and “Surfin’ USA” by the band.

All three groups then came together for the finale piece, “America the Beautiful.”

Each song was conducted by a different

member of the elementary music faculty. Kelly Ann Gelfer, the director of fine and performing arts, said that the students are very lucky to participate in a recognized music program, as Massapequa has received the Best Communities in Music Education distinction for the last 11 years. She said the children are beneficiaries of the music’s department devoted teachers who themselves are outstanding and passionate musicians.

Spread Cheer, Not Germs ARA - Stopping by the nursing home or hospital to spend time with loved ones is a ritual for thousands of Americans -- but are you sharing more than smiles and hugs when you visit?

“Your hands are the main transmitters of health careacquired infections,” says Alecia Cooper, a registered

nurse and senior vice president of clinical services for Medline Industries, Inc. “This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since your hands are constantly in contact with your surroundings -opening doors or dialing the phone, for example.”

Two simple things can go a long way toward

ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly.

Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of

germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers.

“Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one hand and dip the fingertips

of the opposite hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other hand and fingertips,” says Cooper. “It only takes a few seconds and you will be getting at where the majority of germs are.”

Proper hand hygiene is one of the cornerstones

in preventing the spread of infection in a health care setting. Even if the caregiver says they washed their hands right before coming into the room, don’t feel embarrassed to ask them to do it again in front of you.

Making A Statement Ninth grade artists put a new twist on a common practice by using technology to create their artist statements, which analyze their successes and struggles this year. In preparation for the annual art show at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, students in Tildy Becker-DeLuca’s studio in art class recorded their statements, which will be accessible to anyone with a smartphone.

Each student will have about a half-dozen pieces displayed at the art show on June 5. Typically, they would post their artist

statement with their work, but this year there will be a QR code instead. Guests can scan the code with their cell phone cameras and hear each student artist recite his or her statement.

The students worked with technology learning coach Jarrett Fifield to record their statements.

On their Chromebooks they used Vocaroo, an online voice recorder.

Students could record as many times as they wanted until they were satisfied.

Each artist received a unique QR code which linked to the recording,

and could also download it onto their computers.

“This is a good tool for a project like this because it’s simple,” Mr. Fifield said.

“Their need is pretty direct in providing a way for viewers of their art to hear their artist statements.”

Ms. Becker-DeLuca said that as students prepared their artist statements, they were asked to consider several factors including their favorite and least favorite projects of the year, how they have grown as artists and their overall experiences in the class.
