Massapequa Students, Veterans Mark Memorial Day

Bravery, courage and patriotism were oftrepeated themes at the Memorial Day ceremony on May 25 at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students and staff paid tribute to the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for their country.

Students were clad in red, white and blue as they listened to speeches and patriotic tunes. They gave a long ovation to veterans in attendance, which included members of Massapequa VFW Post 7763 and AmVets Post 88. The veterans also served as the color guard for the ceremony.

“Every day, we are extremely fortunate to call America our home,”

Principal Dr. Michael Yannucci said. “But to keep America our home, we rely on the brave servicemen and women who go all over the world to protect us.”

Dr. Yannucci asked for a moment of silence for all in attendance to reflect

and think about those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Superintendent Dr. William Brennan also called on everyone to take a moment over the long holiday weekend to pause and truly lean into what Memorial Day is about.

“I am in awe of the bravery and courage that our service members

display,” Dr. Brennan said. “For the men and women who served in our military, and to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, let us never take our freedom and our rights for granted.”

Student council President Dylan Scro led the Pledge of Allegiance and student speakers Aiden Levey, Keane Rimler and

Maggie Rudolph discussed the meaning and history of Memorial Day, as well as the symbolism of poppy flowers. Second graders, under the direction of music teacher Kathleen Dyckman, sang “A Day of Honor” and “God Bless America.”

Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that all Town of Oyster Bay community pools will open for the season beginning on Saturday, June 24th. The Town of Oyster Bay operates five pool facilities, including Bethpage Community Park, Marjorie Post Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and a saltwater pool at Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing.

Town Launches Building Permit Amnesty Program To Provide Financial Relief

Property Owners Invited To Legalize Building Improvements & Avoid Late Fees And Penalties

Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces that the Town Board recently approved a Building Permit Amnesty Program to provide for a six-month period for homeowners and commercial property owners to obtain the necessary permits required on building improvements previously completed, without incurring late fees and penalties. This Building Permit Amnesty Program is open now through the end of 2023.

“This Building Permit Amnesty Program allows residents and

business owners with unpermitted and previously-completed improvement projects to legalize their property and avoid costly fines and penalties,” said Supervisor Saladino. “All Towns require building permits on home and business improvements to ensure work is completed in accordance with workmanship and safety standards.”

The Town of Oyster Bay’s Building Permit Amnesty Program applies to all permits, including fence, decking, plumbing and all aspects of construction. Residents can call the Town’s

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-proﬁt organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and ﬁrst responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and successfully reduced the waiting time to receive a service dog from 2-3 years to 9-12 months!

The journey their service dogs go on is quite fascinating and in-depth. These dogs undergo speciﬁc training to make sure they can help others to the best of their ability.

America’s VetDogs works primarily with Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers or a mix of the two breeds. They breed the dogs themselves to ensure the canines have the lineage, intelligence and temperament to excel in helping others. Each newborn pup then resides in their Puppy Nursery for about 8 weeks until the future service dog is placed in its innovative Prison Puppy Program.

Through this special program, America’s VetDogs has partnered with more than a dozen correctional facilities along the East Coast. Carefully selected incarcerated individuals are paired with a puppy and, with support from America’s VetDogs’ expert advisors, teach the puppy good house manners, basic obedience and rudimentary service dog tasks. In many facilities, incarcerated veterans are participating in the program.

On the weekends, the puppies reside with Weekend Puppy Raisers, which typically live within 30 miles of a correctional facility. These volunteers teach house

manners and socialization skills, while also attending group obedience classes.

Puppy Raisers provide loving homes and care for each furry friend until they’re old enough to move onto the next step.

After about 14 to 16 months, the puppies return to America’s VetDogs’ Smithtown location for formal service dog training. Each get assigned to a Certiﬁed Service Dog Instructor, who will work with the dog for the next 3-4 months, teaching advanced tasks and customizing its training to match the needs of its future handler. A dog can be trained to pick up dropped items, open doors, press pushplates on power-assisted doors, perform nightmare interruption, provide balance and stability and more.

When a dog is deemed “class-ready,” the chosen handler is invited to a 2 week on-campus class in America’s VetDogs’ newly renovated student residence to complete the training, where they will learn how to work with the dog to become a new team for independence.

Pool memberships can be obtained at each park location. Memberships are available at community park pools for both park district residents and non-park district residents. Daily admission rates, nanny memberships and group access are also available. In addition to the great new amenities

at our facilities, the Town is offering swimming lessons at local pools to residents age five and older. Applications to register for swimming lessons are available on line at oysterbaytown.com/portal, with four swim lesson sessions available to choose from.

The Town will also offer a swim team this summer at outdoor pools located in Syosset-Woodbury Community Park and Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa. Town of Oyster Bay residents aged 6 to 16 are eligible to register for the swim program. Practices will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, from 9:30am to 10:30am beginning Wednesday, June 29th. Swim meets will be held Saturday mornings and class meets will be held Tuesday afternoons. Schedules will be distributed the first week of practice.
