MTAC & YES CCC Deliver Naloxone Training Across The Massapequa Fire Departments

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) is partnering with YES Community Counseling Center (YESCCC) and The Massapequa Fire Departments to provide Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention Education for members of the Massapequa and North Massapequa Fire Departments, their families, and concerned community members. Expanding the awareness and availability of naloxone

is a key part of YESCCC and MTAC’s public health response to the opioid overdose crisis. YESCCC continues to deliver FREE opioid prevention education and naloxone training with kits across the Massapequas. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that is used to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, namely slowed or stopped breathing. Naloxone is a safe antidote to a suspected overdose

and, when given in time, can save a life (Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service).

and honored his distinguished service to our Nation and Community.

The Commissioners, Chiefs, officers, and members of the North Massapequa Fire Department mourn the passing of 67-Year member Jackson B. Pokress of Friendship Engine Company 3, who passed away on Saturday, May 13th at the age of 102.

“Jackson had an amazing legacy of military and community service,” said Chief of Department Mark J. Frascella. “He was a proud World War II Veteran; having enlisted in the United States Army after the Nation was attacked at Pearl Harbor and served with the famed Merrill’s Marauders in Burma during World War II. He ascended to the prestigious rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He later went to display the same dedication and bravery over the last 67 years as a highly active

and respected member of the North Massapequa Fire Department.”

During his illustrious tenure in the fire service, Jackson was elected as a Fire District Commissioner and went on to become President of the Association of Fire Districts of Nassau County. He was a member of the North Massapequa Fire Department’s Friendship Engine Company 3 and had served for many years as the Chaplain on the North Massapequa Fire Department, where his kindness, wisdom and affability were greatly appreciated by every member of the department.

Jackson worked in public relations, was a renowned photographer and journalist, and owned local newspapers. He was widely respected by all who worked with him, including many famous people in sports

and entertainment, as well as government leaders. “He truly led an exemplary life,” Chief Frascella said. “We will always be proud of his incredible legacy.”

Chief Frascella said the members were honored to serve with Jackson, but also were proud of his distinguished service to the United States of America and his community. “He represented the gold standard of selfless service and he was a role model for all of us in this Department,” Chief Frascella said. “A service honoring Jackson will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Chapey’s Funeral Home, located at 20 Hicksville Road in Bethpage. The North Massapequa Fire Department will be holding a firematic service at 8:00 p.m.”

Registration Open For Massapequa High School’s Preschool Lottery

Massapequa’s High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents. The program is led by students from the Child Study course and college-level Children in Families course, under the direction of teacher Anna Gregg.

The high school students enrolled in the courses have successfully completed the Parenting and Child Development Course and are now ready for a hands-on approach to learning. The

students will plan, prepare and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students.

The preschool will begin around Nov. 28 and continue to approximately June 4, 2024. It will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays only, with a morning session and an afternoon session. Enrolled children must attend both days. The morning session will run from approximately 9:10 to 11:10 a.m., and the afternoon session will be held from approximately 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.

Applications are due by June 16. The deadline may be extended if there is still space available.

Children also must be toilet trained. Enrollment is limited to 18 children per session and selection will be by lottery drawing with Massapequa residents and previous students receiving priority.

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year, America’s VetDogs is celebrating their 20th anniversary!

In the early 2000s, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, founded in 1946, recognized not only the growing need for specialized service dogs that could help wounded service-members, but also that aging veterans could also benefit from a specially trained service dog. America’s VetDogs was then founded as a program of the Guide Dog Foundation and later became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit. In 2015, first responders with work-related disabilities were added to the individuals served.

Today, the organization supports those they serve with an uncompromised commitment to excellence, from highly empathetic and certified trainers to meticulously constructed curriculum delivered during a two-week, inresidence training program, followed by a lifetime of aftercare support. It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one assistance dog, but services are always provided free to the individuals served.

The dogs they train are taught specialized tasks and skills such as retrieval of dropped items, positional cues to extend their handler’s personal space when in a crowded setting, counterbalance, nightmare interruption, pressing buttons

A hallmark of America’s VetDogs is the meticulous matching process to ensure that each program participant is matched with a dog that best suits their mobility, personality and lifestyle.

The organization has many high-profile partnerships, which include NBC’s The Today Show, New York Islanders, New York Mets, Washington Capitals, Houston Texans, Contour Mortgage, Deloitte, and Voya. Their best known client was former President George H.W. Bush, who was matched with his service dog, Sully H.W. Bush, who is now a facility dog at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

No organization in the nation provides the depth of personalized services that America’s VetDogs o ers. They truly deliver the highest quality experience to those who served and continue to serve our nation with honor.

Students Support Peer With A Sweet Gesture

During lunch periods, students could donate $1 for a heart-shaped lollipop. The fundraiser was organized by the

student council in honor of Santino, a sixth grader, who had a transplant over the February break. The proceeds, which exceeded $600, were donated

to Sisters by Heart, a foundation that supports patients and families affected by single ventricle heart defects.

Eighth grader Riley

Donohue, treasurer of the student council, came up with the idea. She is a neighbor of Santino and has known him for many years. In addition to the buying lollipops, students could write get-well messages to Santino, which Riley delivered to his family.

“I wanted to cheer him up,” she said. “He’s going to love these cards. I wish he was here because everyone is missing him so much. Hopefully, he’ll be back soon.”

Student council advisers Teresa Ferreira and Denise Robertson said that Riley came up with the idea and presented it to them, Principal Jason Esposito and her fellow officers by making a Google Slide presentation.

“She took the initiative,” Ms. Ferreira said. “We all pitched in and made it happen.”

Student council officers spread the word about the lollipop sale, then worked

the booth during lunch periods, selling their entire supply of sweets.

“We’re so happy for Santino that he is getting better and we can’t wait to have him back,” Principal Jason Esposito said. “Berner’s heart is always with him and we’re so glad our students have had this opportunity to support him.”
