The American Cancer Society Kicked Off the 46th Year of Babes Against Cancer this week uniting more than 30 Golf and Country Clubs across Long Island to raise funds and awareness to support breast and prostate cancer.

The event raises more than $1M annually and the collective support has surpassed $30 million dollars, making it the largest American Cancer Society fundraiser of its kind, thanks to the joint efforts of over 600 volunteers and 5,000 participants at 30 country clubs in the New York Metro area.

Sharing is Caring I recently listened in on a rather interesting Press Club of Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest.

I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls).

I don’t often have the

opportunity to cover events; but recently, I was privileged to take my journalistic tools into the field and exercise some of those reporting and photography skills honed in the lecture halls of college, even as far back as the grade school classroom.

As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled.

Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes.

Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing.

Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

eventually park for follow-up pilot interviews. All around, you heard the murmurings of Did you get the shot? and I thought they would be approaching from the other way… Can we get a do-over?

And in that mix of elation and disappointment as many realized they had not, in fact, captured much of anything in their respective frames, there emerged that collaboration I speak of – that natural instinct to cooperate for a common goal.

Phone numbers were exchanged, business cards swapped and contacts were instantly made, with promises to share footage and photos. After all, we were here for the same reason. No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses.

We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

As a result, Linda made the decision to expand the pre-school and add two additional classrooms, as well as a kitchen area so that she can offer a lunch program going forward. Teeing Off Against Cancer Continued From 6 Westbury.

Dollars raised through Babes Against Cancer supports the American Cancer Society’s work to save lives and provide support to everyone impacted by cancer -- from research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery.

Awards in many categories support growth,

innovative fundraising and dollars raised. This past year, the Top Award was presented to the Glen Oaks Club committee for raising a total of $236,326 in the past season. The runner-up was Fresh Meadow Country Club, who have collectively raised more than $2.8 M since the inception of the Babes campaign.

Highlight of the day

was the presentation of the Sandy Award, named in memory of Sandy Zuckerman Rothstein, a breast cancer survivor who started the first tournament at The Muttontown Club in 1972. This year’s award was presented to Sandy Seltzer of Roslyn for her outstanding contribution to the Babes Against Cancer fundraising efforts

at Fresh Meadow Country Club.

About Babes Against Cancer: In its 46th year, BABES AGAINST CANCER tournaments are organized and run by volunteer committees guided by an event Chairperson.

Events are primarily golf tournaments, but tennis, bridge, Mah Jongg and bridge are all played to

raise funds. Club events and income outcomes vary widely, ranging from $1,500 to over $200,000 per club, for a total of over 1.3 million in 2017.

The Society provides a tournament guide with instructions and fundraising tips, gifts for all participants, course signage, prizes, club-wide contests plus any support the volunteer Chairs

require.

Our dear childhood friend Joan Greenspan (Seaford Class of ‘79) needs our help! Her MS has progressed to the point that she can no longer get around by herself and she has no one to depend on for help. Except for the rare visit from someone strong enough to help lift her in and out of their car, along with her wheelchair, Joan is trapped in her apartment, with one day running into the next and no hope for things to change. Joan can no longer use her legs for driving, but a handicapped van, equipped with a lift and hand controls, would literally give Joan her life back!

We, her lifelong Seaford friends from near and far, thought we’d put together a beautiful day filled with lots of music, delicious food, raffles and of course, love, laughter and friendship!

All the proceeds will go to help Joan regain her freedom.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit.

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today!

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.

Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

specifically designed for military members.

Fifth-graders in the Massapequa School District prepared for their upcoming move to Berner Middle School by getting advice from the people who experienced that transition just a year or two ago.

During their library periods, the soon-tobe elementary school graduates participated in

videoconferences with Berner students. The face-to-face interaction is just one way they get an introduction to middle school. The fifth-graders were also invited to a club and intramural fair in April.

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas Hand today announced that residents can get a jumpstart on summer by pre-registering for Town pool passes beginning on Saturday, May 26th. All Town pools will open for the season beginning on Saturday, June 23rd.

“The warm, sunny days of summer are just around the corner and residents may start pre-registering for our pools Memorial Day weekend,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This year we have many new amenities for our residents, including new pool deck furniture, picnic benches, sunshades, and improved restroom facilities.”

The Town of Oyster Bay operates five pool facilities, including Bethpage Community Park, Marjorie Post Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and a saltwater pool at Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing. Beginning on May 26th, pre-registration will take place daily and will be held from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays at the community park pools and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Tappen Pool. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, pre-registration will take place from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at all facilities.

Registration will take place during regular hours of operation once pools open daily.

Connecting with Zoo Third-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently participated in a videoconference with the Buffalo Zoo. The “Rainforest Experience” program introduced students to animals such as the howler monkey, tenrec, poison dart frog,

yellow-spotted Amazon river turtle and three-toed sloth.

A representative from the zoo talked to the students about the types of plants and animals in a rainforest, and which can be found in the different rainforest layers. She shared videos of those animals in their

habitats at the zoo and even held a few for the students to see. Prior to the videoconference, which was arranged by library media specialist Melinda Alford, each thirdgrade student researched and wrote a report on an animal found in the Amazon rainforest.

Music Student Wins Scholarship won the Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Talent Competition. The teen vocalist wowed judges with her rendition of Mozart’s classical aria, “Voi Che Sapete.”

Ms. Mener was honored for her achievement at the council’s Scholarship Winners Awards Presentation last month, where she was presented with the Platinum Award and a $1,000 scholarship. A New Beginning With almost a year of experience under their belts, young musicians at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District showcased their talents at the Beginner Spring Concert.

Thirdand fourthgraders performed for their peers during a morning show at school followed by an evening performance for families at the high school.

featured instrumental and vocal ensembles.

Music teacher Tom Tucker conducted the third-grade recorder band which performed songs included the “Peanuts” theme and “Rockin’ Robin,” as well as the fourth-grade chorus which sang a folk song from the Torres Strait Islands, “Sesere Eeye,” and “Fifty Nifty United States” which required the young vocalists to memorize the

states in alphabetical order.

The fourth-grade orchestra, under the direction of Clarence Kelly, had a three-song set including “French Folk Song,” “Song of Brother Hood” and “Twinkle Twinkle.” Conductor Gary Loock led the fourthgrade band in “Beethoven’s Ninth,” “Let’s Go Band II” HANDS ON APPROACH - Fourth-graders Jayden Schaefer and Kailey Lanning and “Power Rock.” measured the mass of a seashell by noting change in water volume as they prepared for the New York State science practical assessment at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. PLANTING SEEDS - Grace Early Childhood scientists are learning about germination. The students are observing the process over time. The seed’s progress is being tracked in each child’s “We Plant a Bean” book. So much fun to see them grow!

Massapequa High School’s mock trial club recently won a pair of tournaments, with firstplace finishes for each of its teams.

The team coached by social studies teacher Daniel Bachman captured its first Nassau County championship since 2012 as they went undefeated in the Nassau County Bar Association’s Mock Trial Tournament.

Beginning in February, Mr. Bachman’s squad competed twice a month at the Supreme Court building in Mineola, and won all seven rounds including the culminating match against Syosset High School on April 30. The team alternated between arguing as the prosecution and the defense throughout the season. It now advances to

the state competition.

“We put in so much work and everyone was so dedicated,” said co-captain Kayla Collins. “We went in feeling pretty confident.”

Kayla and co-captain Samantha Cupolo, who served as the lead attorneys for their team, said that preparing for the mock trials required a lot of time and practice, including several days a week after school and even on weekends. The students worked with mentor attorneys who are graduates of Massapequa High School and former members of the mock trial team, and incorporated their advice and critiques into the competitions.

Many members of the squad are students who are considering careers in law or politics, such as seniors Kayla and Samantha who

plan to study political science at Northeastern University and Binghamton University, respectively.

The team coached by social studies teacher John Pardue won the 32nd annual Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School Marv Hazan Moot Court Tournament in April.

The team earned first place after successfully arguing every case they were assigned in front of a panel of judges. They were only given 15 minutes to prepare for each case.

The team competed against high schools from across Long Island, the United States and the world. Senior co-captain Jessica Lorenzo said she and her teammates enjoyed the experience and were able to improve their public speaking and argumentative skills.

The national Teacher of the Year award recognizes law-related educators who further the understanding of the role of courts, law enforcement agencies and the legal profession; help students recognize their responsibilities as well as their rights; encourage effective law-related education programs in their schools and communities; and increase communication among students, educators and those involved professionally in the legal system.

Mr. Bachman has recruited several Massapequa High School graduates who now work as attorneys and judges to mentor mock trial students. Last year, he attended the Supreme Court Summer Institute for Teachers, a weeklong program in Washington, D.C. with workshops led

by Supreme Court experts,

journalists, authors and attorneys to provide insight on arguing in front of the court. He then hosted training in Massapequa High School’s law room for other teachers on Long Island.

“There’s a genuine enthusiasm that goes along with this program,” Mr. Bachman said. “We do everything. If there’s a competition out there, we’re in it. I have my dream job.”

Mr. Bachman invites the district’s fifth-graders into the law room every year to see a case performed by high school students. He also organizes the high school’s Law Day in which is attended by more than 100 students who serve as lawyers and witnesses in mock cases. In 2016, took five students to witness the presidential debate at Hofstra University.

“Mr. Bachman’s tireless work ethic is the main reason why the Massapequa High School law program is so successful,” said Dr. Brian Trapani, the curriculum associate for social studies. “He enthusiastically devotes his time on nights and weekends to ensure that students are prepared for upcoming tournaments.

He has played an integral part in designing the law curriculum, and all of this work helped create the foundation that led to the mock trial team winning the Nassau County championship.”

Daniel Bachman, a social studies teacher at Massapequa High School, has been named the American Lawyers Alliance Teacher of the Year. He was recognized for his work with the law program and mock trial team.

Mr. Bachman, a 1990 graduate of Massapequa High School, has taught for 23 years including the past 18 at his alma mater.

He has helped grow the law program, which is part of the social studies department, and is one of six faculty members teaching at least one law class. More than 200 hundred students are enrolled in 13 total sections of Introduction to Law levels 1, 2 and 3, which meet in the law classroom that resembles a courtroom. He also teaches Advanced Placement government.

He serves as an adviser to the mock trial team and coaches the “A” squad, which recently won the 2018 Nassau County Bar Association tournament.

Peep Peep “Peep peep peep” has been the background noise in first-grade classrooms at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as students have been raising baby chicks.

After three weeks, students watched the baby chicks start pecking, and shortly after they had new friends in the classrooms.

Each class had between three and nine baby chicks, which were moved into brooders. The students made sure the young animals had proper food and water.

The activity helped the first-graders learn about animal life cycles. Students recorded their daily observations in journals, and some classes even named their baby chicks.
