The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

to those who need a helping hand.”

The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.

Here are ways you can get involved:

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

Town To Host Special Olympics Spring Games In

Over 500 Athletes To Compete In An Olympic-Style Contest On May 6th

Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will once again host the prestigious Special Olympics Spring Games in partnership with Special Olympics New York. Held at the Farmingdale Athletic Complex on Saturday, May 6th, the games will include a fullday of competitive track and field events for over 500 athletes supported by more than 300 coaches. These athletes - children and adults with intellectual disabilities - have dedicated months to training for an Olympic-style competition that will culminate with the contest during these Spring Games.

“Special Olympics are an opportunity to showcase the hard work,

dedication, talents, and tremendous athletic achievements of athletes, while also paving the way to eliminate social barriers and stereotypes differentlyabled individuals face,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is very proud to be a partner with Special Olympics New York and the Farmingdale School District in making this important event a reality. I hope you’ll join us in witnessing the joy, courage, and determination of these inspirational athletes.”

“Special Olympics New York provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing them a

continuing opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, make friends, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families,” Diane Colonna, Vice President, Downstate Operations Special Olympics, New York said. “We are honored that the Farmingdale School District will host our Spring Games and make a difference in the lives of these athletes.”

Massapequa Schools Conducting Breakfast Program Survey

The Massapequa School District will be conducting a survey of parents of students in kindergarten through fifth grade who attend the district’s elementary schools to determine if there is any interest in a school breakfast program.

If insufficient interest is determined, an exemption to participate in this program will be requested by the board of education to the New York State Education Department.

Parents and taxpayers are asked to share their concerns regarding the

Massapequa Artist To Be Featured In Selective Show

Art has long been a passion for Massapequa High School senior Lily DiBenedetto. Her hard work recently paid off, as one of her pieces was selected for an upcoming show, Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum.

The annual juried exhibition runs from April 29 to June 4. It will feature artwork from 91 students in Nassau and Suffolk counties

that was completed during the 2022-23 school year.

Lily is Massapequa’s first student-artist ever selected to this show, which had more than 500 applicants this year.

Her featured piece is a self-portrait that was created digitally using Krita. It was a project for her Advanced Placement art class, and was also featured in this year’s All-County art

show, hosted by the Nassau County Art Supervisors Association.

Earlier this year, students from the AP art class visited the Heckscher Museum, where they saw the work of Long Island artists. Teacher Paul Leone tasked each student with creating an original piece that was inspired by artwork they saw in the museum. Lily said an unfinished self-

portrait was the inspiration for her piece that will soon hang at Heckscher.

“I wasn’t expecting to be selected, so it was definitely surprising,” she said. “It’s very encouraging, because I plan on continuing with art in college.”

In the fall, Lily will attend SUNY New Paltz to pursue her dream of becoming an art teacher. At Massapequa High School, she has

enrolled in numerous art courses including Computer Art and Drawing and Painting levels 1 and 2, as well as an Introduction to Photoshop technology class.

Lily said Massapequa’s art program has helped her hone her skills and broaden her horizons. Her teachers have also turned her on to other art exploration opportunities, such as

courses through Adelphi University’s pre-college program.

“Lily is phenomenally talented,” Mr. Leone said. “Everything she does, she excels at. She’s so dedicated and hard-working, and I’m so proud of her.”

She will be invited to an opening reception for the artists on April 29, which will be followed by an awards presentation.
