Registration Now Underway for Town Summer Recreation Program Full Day Camps Available at North & South Shore Parks - July 6thAugust 13th.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announces that registration for the Town’s Summer Recreation Program, open to children ages 4-12, is now underway. This year’s program once again includes a full-day option at two locations: Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa and Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, where campers can stay on site through the lunch hour.

Those not interested in the new full-day option can still attend one of the Town’s traditional Summer Recreation Programs, located at Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale, Harry Tappen Beach in Glen Head, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster

Bay and Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park.

“The Town’s Summer Recreation Program features great activities for children, including arts and craft, various games, themed days, water fun, scavenger hunts and so much more,” said Councilwoman Johnson.

“With a variety of options available at six locations throughout the Town, this program offers parents a fun and affordable option for their children this summer.”

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child.

They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders.

CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done.

Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids.

Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help.

Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses.

Contractors For Kids is local to the core. They know our Island well and they love to help locals. Their office is located in Holbrook and they have no plans of going anywhere. The

pandemic took its toll on CFK, as it did on many, but they stayed afloat and are thankful for the opportunity to continue to make a difference.

Recently, CFK helped a 12 year old boy who suffered from a traumatic brain injury. He is now blind and he has a history of Wilm’s tumor and craniotomy, among many other complications. This little boy was put into the foster system and was adopted by the nurse that fostered him. CFK was able to provide them with a special chair to hold him, car payments and rent!

Additionally, they assisted a 6 year old girl with Fibromatosis soft tissue sarcoma who lives in Holbrook. Due to intensive Chemo treatments, her mom had to stay home with her. CFK helped with several month’s mortgage payments, water and electric bills, as well as car payments to help keep this family afloat during difficult times!

So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help!

Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings.

• Complete as-needed or at a minimum, an annual inspection, on the vehicle. Keep in mind

that different seasons of the year require different inspections and repairs.

• Use quality parts.

• When buying a vehicle, stick to retail dealers that put cars through a detailed inspection process to help ensure a given vehicle’s safety and reliability. At the same time, consider dealers with an attached service department to help streamline maintenance and repairs.

SPECIAL AUTOMOBILE ISSUE How To Lower The Cost Of Auto Insurance are they would love to lower their auto insurance costs. While there’s no onesize-fits-all solution to cut auto insurance premiums, drivers can try various strategies to save money on their policies.

• Raise your policy’s deductibles. Higher deductibles may sound scary to drivers, but raising the deductibles is a great way to lower the cost of auto insurance. The

Auto insurance is a must-have for drivers. While it might seem hard to believe, as of 2019 there are still some places in the United States where auto insurance is not mandatory. Auto insurance is mandatory in Canada, though each province has its own requirements in terms of the minimum amount of coverage allowable by law.

Many people, even those in places where auto insurance is not mandatory, recognize the importance of being insured before they get behind the wheel. However, that doesn’t mean those same drivers would not like to cut the cost of their auto insurance policies. A 2019 analysis from the online financial resource NerdWallet found that the average cost of car insurance in the United States is $1,621 per year. Why Is Tire Rotation So Important?

Vehicle Maintenance Tasks Drivers Don’t Want To Overlook

Vehicle owners need to keep maintenance on the mind to ensure their cars and trucks are operating at peak capacity. Various components should be checked and serviced at key intervals. Oil changes and fluid topoffs are part of routine maintenance, but it can be easy to forget about other important parts of the vehicle, including tires.

Rotating tires is vital to their upkeep.

Bridgestone Tires advises that tire rotation involves routinely repositioning a vehicle’s tires in specific patterns from front to back and side to side.

According to Big O Tires, the front tires tend to wear on the outside edges because the tire leans over when a driver turns a corner. The rear tires just follow the front ones, so they usually wear more evenly. By leaving tires in place, the outside edges on the front tires will wear

down much faster than the rest and those tires will need to be replaced sooner. Rotation may be required by tire warranties. Rotation also keeps the tires working properly.

Experts generally advise tire rotation every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, even if they do not show any signs of wear. It is challenging to determine if weather treads are uneven or how much wear has been sustained just by looking at them. Rotating tires can prolong the life of tires and decrease how frequently they need to be replaced.

Rotating tires keeps the tread depth uniform and helps maintain traction and consistent handling across all four tires.

Bridgestone says the tire rotation pattern that is best for a particular vehicle depends on the type of tire being used. Patterns are recommended by the standardizing body of the tire industry, called The Tire and Rim Association,

Inc. Individuals can consult with professional mechanics about the proper way to rotate tires.

Many tire manufacturers or automotive stores that have sold customers tires also will do tire rotations — some free of charge.

In addition to proper traction, minimizing uneven tire treads causes the vehicle to be more balanced, advises Wrench, a mobile auto repair and maintenance company.

This enables the driver to have more control even when roads are slippery.

Many auto service centers will then align and balance tires after they have been rotated. At this time the mechanic will likely check brakes as well, since it is easy to see and reach them when the tires are off.

Tire rotation is an important component of vehicle maintenance.

Check with a qualified automotive professional to see if it’s time to have your vehicle’s tires rotated.

Savvy drivers recognize that maintenance is essential to keeping their vehicles running strong for years on end.

Such maintenance ensures vehicles are safe to take out on the road, and basic upkeep also protects drivers’ financial investments in their cars and trucks.

Drivers who are not mechanically inclined tend to put their vehicles in the hands of a trusted mechanic to perform routine maintenance like oil changes, but there’s a host of simpler vehicle maintenance tasks that drivers don’t want to overlook, some of which can be performed without visiting the auto body shop.

• Brake inspections: Brake inspections are best left to the professionals, who can check the thickness of brake pads and look for other indicators of excessive wear. The automotive resource Cars. com recommends having brakes inspected during

routine tire rotations, which many automotive professionals suggest should be done every six months.

• Car wash: Car washes might not be the first task drivers associate with vehicle maintenance, but they can prevent longterm damage to cars and trucks. Damage from bird droppings and road salt and ice melt products in the winter can damage a vehicle’s paint job and its undercarriage. Wash the car on your own at home or visit a professional car wash to perform this simple yet vital maintenance at regular intervals and whenever you notice significant buildup of dirt and grime on the car’s exterior.

• Air filter: The air filter on a car or truck prevents debris, dirt and other contaminants from getting into the engine.

The auto insurance experts at Allstate® advise drivers to inspect their vehicle air filters once a year. Air filters

in need of replacement may appear dirty, and reduced fuel economy, unusual engine sounds and reduced horsepower are some other potential indicators that an air filters needs to be replaced.

• Windshield wipers: Windshield wiper blades are easily overlooked, but various automotive experts recommend replacing wiper blades every six to 12 months.

Old wiper blades won’t perform at peak capacity, dramatically reducing visibility during heavy rain and snowstorms. Anyone can replace their own windshield wiper blades in a matter of minutes, and new blades won’t break the bank.

We held our April Board Meeting recently, and the report from the Nominating Committee was made by Carol Leff. We will have our elections in May at the General Meeting. We look forward to all of the new and returning Board Members working together as a cohesive group.

Our next General Meeting will be held on Thursday, April 22nd at Sal’s Place. We ask all to support this luncheon, as it will be our first one back in-person since about three months ago. We have planned some great upcoming fundraisers like a Wine Tasting, Trade Show, and Craft Fair. We also still have Restaurant Week on the table – which will help our restaurant businesses to prosper and encourage our community to enjoy and participate in as well.

We have a new concept for our member businesses through the OPTIMALLY firm. This company assists businesses with a certain threshold of revenue look at their costs and help them save money where applicable. The Chamber will also benefit, as Gary Levy (our member and President of Biltmore Savings Consultants) will rebate to the Chamber when a business uses this concept. We look forward to a great relationship with OPTIMALLY, and we ask all to promote this program for the benefit of all to use. More information will be on the website shortly as a Membership Benefit. My final piece of this message is dedicated to two great Board Members.

Past President Robert R. Barrett has had the honor of being President twice, and he led the Chamber with skill and determination. Robert is a retired NYPD Police Officer and a current Realtor with Nappa Realty. He is well-known within the Massapequa community for being active in the Kiwanis as well. I value his advice and direct approach, and thoroughly enjoy his writings with his million-dollar words.

The other Board Member is Past President Patty Orzano. I will give her the name “Madame Chamber,” as she is involved in so much with our programs, and she does a great job with her dedication and determination for the Chamber in these sometimes trying times. I value her advice and friendship and look for more great things to come from Patty. She is a former business owner of 7-Eleven on Merrick Road in E. Massapequa, and she now consults for other local merchants and does a great job for them.

data and phone battery life. Cars that are not equipped with Wi-Fi can have it as an add-on with an installed wireless vehicle router. These routers range from $200 to $600 and are professionally installed.

Having Wi-Fi in a vehicle is handy when taking road trips or when work requires internet connectivity. Dedicated vehicle internet can help save on mobile phone data plans and battery life. Plus, people increasingly staying at home can rely on a vehicle’s Wi-Fi system as a back-up should their home internet go down.

The Benefits Of Wearing Seat Belts The importance of wearing seat belts in vehicles has resonated with drivers and passengers across the globe. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the national seat belt use rate in passenger vehicles in 2019 was 90.7 percent. And despite their simplicity, particularly when compared to

the various other technologies available in modern vehicles, seat belts remain an incredibly effective device against injury and even death, though only when drivers and their passengers remember to engage them. For example, the NHTSA notes that seat belts saved an estimated 14,955 lives in 2017 alone.

Studies have indicated that front seat riders in cars who wear their seat belts can reduce their risk of fatal injury by 45 percent, while front seat riders in trucks can reduce their risk for fatal injury by 60 percent.

Wi-Fi-enabled vehicles are becoming hot commodities for drivers.

There are various ways to access the internet in a car. Drivers can buy an add-on device.

Even mobile gadgets that aren’t specifically designed for vehicle applications can be easily connected. The devices plug into the 12-volt accessory outlet. OBD II devices connect to a car’s OBD II port. This is most often located below the steering wheel.

How To Protect Your Car From Sun Damage People know to protect their skin and eyes from the sun. Sun exposure can be dangerous for the body, but the sun’s rays also can damage automobiles.

Leaving a vehicle exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time increases the risk of damage to its interior and exterior. It’s important that car and truck owners recognize this so they can mitigate the potential problems sun and heat may cause.

Testing conducted at the State Farm® Vehicle Research Facility found interior vehicle air temperatures have been recorded well in excess of 145 F. Interior surfaces exposed to direct sunlight have been recorded at temperatures in excess of 195 F.

The automotive repair service Fix Auto says the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause the vehicle’s paint to peel and fade over time.

UV rays break down the molecules in the paint and make it appear dull. The company says red paint is particularly susceptible because red paint molecules deteriorate faster in the sun than other paint colors.

To prevent potential sun-related damage, take these precautions.

• Avoid direct sunlight.

Park in the shade as much as possible.

• Crack a window. If it is safe to do so, lower interior air temperature and equalize air pressure by opening up car windows a little.

• Use a windshield

protector. Reflect sunlight away and keep the vehicle cool with a windshield sun protector that unfolds and slides into place.

• Use a protectant wax. A layer of wax can

Raynham Hall Hosting Online Book Launch Event Detailing George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that historic Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay will host a virtual book launch and lecture by author Bill Bleyer on Monday, May 3, at 7:00pm, detailing his new book George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring: A History and Tour Guide, ahead of its May 10th publication.

Raynham Hall Museum was the home of Robert Townsend, a central member of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring. The home was occupied by British officer Col. John Graves Simcoe during the Revolutionary War. Transformed into a Victorian villa in the 1850s, the house offers two eras of interpretation, with the front of the house showcasing the period of the Revolution, and the back of the house preserving a late 19th century aesthetic. While still closed due to the pandemic, the garden is open to the public, and virtual school tours are available by appointment.
