Registration Now Open For Toddler Sports Program

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced that the Toddler Sports Program returns this spring on April 18th. This 6-week program offers sports classes at the Hicksville Athletic Center for children ages 3 and 4.

Classes will take place on: Tuesdays at 1pm or 2pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center; and Thursdays at 1pm or 2pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center.

Rebuilding Together

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

Security and comfort should come to mind when we think of home...but what if your home didn’t make you feel that way? Maybe there’s no heat or hot water for your family, or your doors don’t lock so you prop a chair under the doorknob each night. When you’re living on a fixed or low income, making repairs or modifications is typically just a wish, not a reality. Homeowners know that taking care of small problems today can help avert larger, more costly problems tomorrow and this is where Rebuilding Together Long Island can come into play and help out! For more than 30 years, RTLI has focused on improving the living conditions of our neighbors and fulfilling those dreams of a safe, warm and accessible home.

Primarily a volunteer organization, they are neighbors helping neighbors and there is never a charge. From minor to sometimes major repairs, they improve the safety, health and well-being of every household. From handyman type repairs to modifications for our aging population and those with physical limitations, they’re ready to lend a hand.

Recent studies have shown that for people 65 and older, falls account for approximately 60 percent of all injury-related emergency department visits and over 50 percent of injuryrelated deaths annually. Also, up to 80 percent of falls in the home occur in the bathroom. RTLI can install grab bars and ADA height toilets, widens doorways where possible and can even have bathtubs converted to walk-in showers. Wheelchair ramps are one of their most requested modifications and can be constructed in two days. So how can you help?

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

“The Town’s Toddler Sports Program is a fantastic way to teach your toddler the fundamentals of sports in a fun and social environment,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “This program is sure to be a hit with children and parents alike, as youngsters are given the opportunity to learn the basics of various different sports such as tee-ball, flag football and more along with children their own age.”

Residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child.

Online registration is now available at www. oysterbaytown.com/ parksportal. Space is limited- first come, first serve. Registration will close when the program reaches full capacity. Each class is approximately 50 minutes. The cost of the program is $75 per child who is a Town resident, and $90

per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. The child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. The child MUST be 3 years old by the start of the program. The Toddler Sports Program is run by the Town’s Parks Department, Recreation Division. Back Day on Saturday, April 29th from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Massapequa High School East Driveway - District Office Parking Lot.

MTAC is working together with our nation’s annual drug take back program along with its Sector Partners, the Massapequa Elks Lodge #2162, Massapequa Public Schools and Nassau County Police Department to

promote healthy families in the Massapequas. MTAC aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating residents about the potential for abuse of medications.

Massapequa Schools Conducting Breakfast Program Survey

The Massapequa School District will be conducting a survey of parents of students in kindergarten through fifth grade who attend the district’s elementary schools to determine if there is any interest in a school breakfast program. If insufficient

Local Massapequa Community Raises Money For Rare Cancers

Community Members in Massapequa who belong to Massapequa Fit Body Boot Camp along with Owner and Coaches came together and started a Cycle for survival team to raise awareness and money to beat rare cancers.

About Cycle for Survival:

About 50% of people with cancer have a rare cancer. Rare cancers include brain, pancreatic, ovarian, stomach, all types of pediatric cancers, sarcomas and many more. Even though they account for about half of all cancer diagnoses when combined, research on many rare cancers is drastically underfunded, often leaving patients with limited or no treatment options.

Cycle for Survival was started in 2007 by Jennifer

Goodman Linn and her husband, Dave Linn.

Jen was a Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) sarcoma patient and Equinox member.

She was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma in 2004, at age 32 and 1year after getting married.

After undergoing treatment at MSKCC, Jen founded Cycle for Survival in 2007 (then called Spin4Survival) as a way to give back to the doctors who treated her at MSKCC.

The first event was held in the cycling studio at Equinox Columbus Circle and brought together family, friends, and colleagues who rode and raised $250,000 for MSKCC.

In that moment, Jen sparked what has now become a national movement partnered by

MSKCC and Equinox.

Equinox is the founding partner of Cycle for Survival. Equinox’s unwavering support has helped the events grow exponentially, from one cycling studio in New York City to large events across the country. Its world-renowned cycling instructors lead each ride, and Equinox’s leadership and staff dedicate significant time and resources to raise awareness and funds.

Throughout her sevenyear battle with cancer, Jen was unwavering in her commitment to raise money and help people facing rare cancers like hers, making a better future possible through more research, clinical trials, and ultimately, lifesaving treatments — bringing hope to patients and families worldwide.

Together Jen and Dave ignited The Cycle for Survival fundraising movement — and Jen’s legacy lives on.

Despite losing Jen in 2011, we continue to be inspired by her fearless determination and passion to beat rare cancers and ensure better outcomes for everyone.

Cycle for Survival is now an annual fundraiser that occurs throughout the Nation from March through May. 100% of every dollar supports pioneering research and lifesaving clinical trials at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK).

People Ride together on stationary bikes in 13 cities across the United States. All rides are fourhour relay-style events. You can build your own team, join an existing one, or participate individually.

South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one

of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

For the Jay Koolpix, Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Nassau County and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

Community Blood Drive

New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso, in coordination with the New York Blood Center and the Massapequa Fire Department, will be holding a community blood drive Monday, April 24, 2023 from 3:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. at the Massapequa Fire Department located at

515 Hicksville Road, Massapequa.
