Saladino Seeks Nominations

To Honor Local Veterans

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Oyster Bay Town Board are now accepting nominations in order to honor veterans at the Town’s ‘Salute to America’ Celebration scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 7:30 pm at TOBAY Beach. Residents are invited to nominate extraordinary individuals who have made a positive difference in our veteran communities.

“The Town of Oyster Bay’s ‘Salute to America’ Celebration provides the ideal backdrop to recognize veterans and individuals who continue to actively serve in the community and advocate for issues and concerns relative to veterans. The Town is proud to recognize and honor amazing individuals who have helped to shape our communities for the better through their

continuing advocacy and exemplary community service each year,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I hope residents will consider submitting a nomination of an individual who deserves special recognition for their continued efforts on behalf of the veteran’s community. I look forward to recognizing the efforts of outstanding individuals who have impacted the lives of our veterans in an extraordinary way yet again this year.”

Nominations are being accepted in three different categories of recognition:

Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a veteran), Friend of Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a nonveteran), and Lifetime Achievement Award (awarded to a veteran or a non-veteran). All entries

must include a supporting narrative describing the nominee’s on-going veterans related activities, and all nominees must be Town residents. All nominations must be postmarked no later than Monday, June 3, 2024.

Winners will be recognized as part of a special program during the ‘Salute to America’ Celebration, a patriotic evening of top-flight musical talent and fireworks, which serves as a thank you to all of our veterans and active military for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every day as Americans.

Massapequa Schools Conducting Breakfast Program Survey

The Massapequa School District will be conducting a survey of parents of students in kindergarten through fifth grade who attend the district’s elementary schools to determine if there is any interest in a school breakfast program. If insufficient

interest is determined, an exemption to participate in this program will be requested by the Massapequa Board of Education to the New York State Education Department.

Students Take A Safe Driving Journey

Massapequa High School juniors and seniors learned the consequences of distracted and impaired driving from the safety of the gymnasium. The Save a Life Tour came to the school on March 27, which featured simulation machines on which students could explore the consequences of bad driving decisions.

At one machine, students put on a pair of goggles that simulated being impaired by drugs or alcohol. To demonstrate the effects of distracted driving, they had to navigate the streets at the other machine while holding a cell phone and responding to text messages.

“Just as the students are starting to drive and are excited to drive, it’s important for them to remember there are a lot of distractions on the road,” said PTSA President Sheila Grauling. “Their safety, and everybody else’s safety,

After completing the simulations, students signed a safe driving pledge. They also completed surveys about the program.

Students said that it definitely made an impact. Senior Colleen Emanuele explained that it was a safe way for students to experience actual risks.

“It’s a safer, proactive way to teach us about distracted driving without having to learn the hard way,” added senior Bianca Della Porta. “We’re really lucky that they provide us with this opportunity because this program can save lives.

Saladino & LaMarca Launch Collection Drive To Support Veterans At VA Hospital

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Clerk Richard LaMarca call on residents to ‘Spring into Action’ to support veterans by donating to a collection drive in support of the Northport VA. Residents are invited to donate toiletries and new clothing

through May 15th.

“From hosting veteran appreciation events to recognizing their service with Hometown Heroes Banners in our parks, the Town of Oyster Bay is committed to honoring veterans for their service to our nation,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Please join

this mission to help bring the comforts of home to veterans living at the Northport VA Hospital by making a donation to our collection drive.”

Most needed items include toiletries (toothbrushes/toothpaste, denture adhesive, hairbrushes/combs, unscented deodorant, body

wash, unscented lotion, nail clippers/files, and shampoo/ conditioner), men’s/ women’s clothing (assorted sizes of underwear/briefs, sweatshirts, sweatpants with no drawstring, longsleeve t-shirts, slippers and flip flops sized L, XL).

“When I learned that the Northport VA has a ‘Wish List’ of items their veterans

desperately need, I knew residents would generously spring into action to help ensure these needs are met,” said Clerk LaMarca. “I thank the residents of our wonderful Town in advance for their generosity and support of our veterans.”

The Town’s Collection Drive will run for 30 days beginning April 15th.

Collection Bins will be available on weekdays from 9:00am to 4:45pm at Town Hall North (54 Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay) and Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa).

Environmental Scholarships Offered

The South Shore Audubon Society is offering two $1,000 scholarships for College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in the areas of biological or environmental science. This includes wildlife management, forestry, animal behavior, ecology, marine biology, oceanography, mammalogy, ornithology or the field of sustainable and renewable energy. Previous winners have used their scholarships to help purchase books, to pay for travel expenses to field sites, for specialized equipment or other educational needs.

To be eligible for the Scholarships, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a

college in Nassau or Suffolk County. One scholarship is funded by Evelyn Bishop and her family, and one is funded by Jay Koolpix

Drug Take Back Day

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Massapequa Village Mayor Danny Pearl announced a partnership with Drug Free Long Island and the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) to host a ‘Shed the Meds’ Drug Take Back Day at Massapequa Park Village Hall on Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 10:00am – 1:00pm.

“This Drug Take Back Day is a great opportunity to rid your medicine cabinet of old and unwanted prescription drugs,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Through proper disposal of old medications, we can prevent them from contaminating the environment through improper disposal and also keep them out of the wrong hands and away from young people.”

Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Support Group On Zoom

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is forming a new online support group for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 18-months. The group, which is free, will provide the opportunity for people to meet with others, and receive support.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola invites local artists and artisans to display and sell their hand-crafted goods at a special day of “Art in the Park.” Applications are now available for the event which will be held on Saturday, May 18th at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park & Beach in Oyster Bay.

“Art in the Park offers local artists and artisans an amazing opportunity to showcase their best work for the public and gain local notoriety,” said

“Art in the Park is certain to attract hundreds of families and seniors as the event also features live music, food trucks and activities for kids.”

Participants must be 18 or older, and display and sell only their original pieces. No commercial or mass-produced items are permitted.
