Town Seeks Counselors For Summer Recreation Program

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town is seeking counselors ages 16 and older for the 2024 Summer Recreation Program. The six-week program provides a rewarding employment experience for counselors as they work with children and make a difference.

“This great summer job is ideal for residents age 16 or older who are looking to build their resume,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our summer recreation

counselors get real-world experience while having fun, making memories, and making a difference in the lives of others.”

Applicants must be available for the duration of the program, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning July 1st through August 9th. Orientation will take place the week of June 24th. Summer Recreation Program participants take part in trips, tournaments, shows and athletic events, including the TOBAY Games, making being a counselor

a great first job for many residents.

Employment opportunities are offered at Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), PlainviewOld Bethpage and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, Ellsworth W. Allen Town Park in Farmingdale, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, and Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing.

“The Town has positions available for counselors, coordinators, leaders and assistant leaders at all locations, especially at our north shore facilities at Theodore Roosevelt Park and Tappen Beach,” said Councilman Labriola. “Spots fill quickly and we encourage all interested residents to fill out an application today.”

Maintaining A Lawn Routinely Roamed By Pets HOME & GARDEN

Vibrant, green lawns can draw attention to any landscape. Many homeowners toil for hours each week to ensure their lawns are pristine or invest in lawn care services to help maintain a yard if they do not have the time to do so themselves. While many treatments can be applied to lawns to help them thrive, animal waste is not among them. Pet owners who aspire to have beautiful lawns have to take a few extra steps to ensure lawns can persevere despite the presence of furry companions.

Reseed with a damage-resistant grass

There are many different types of grass, and some are more resilient than others. Tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and Bermuda grass are just

some of the grass varieties that can capably handle pet traffic. If replacing the entire lawn is not possible, consider reseeding or addressing the areas that pets frequent.

Strengthen the root system

It may be tempting to cut the lawn short, particularly if dogs or cats like to nibble on long blades of grass, but that approach could be doing the lawn a disservice. According to The Home Depot, letting the lawn grow to at least three inches will keep moisture in the soil and prevent evaporation. That moisture will strengthen the roots, creating a healthier lawn.

Create pet paths

Various materials can be used in these high-

traffic areas to minimize the sights and signs of pet traffic. Mulch or crushed stone can establish these pet highways and look like intended features.

Set boundaries

Pet urine contains high levels of nitrogen, which can burn grass and turn it brown. It’s not possible to water down urine or pick up solid waste immediately every time a pet goes outdoors, so designate a pet-friendly spot for potty time. Use fencing or a dog run to separate this area and help mitigate “land mines” all over the lawn. Fencing also can keep pets out of vegetable gardens and away from potentially toxic plants.

Avoid chemical lawn treatments

When pets use the yard

and rest on the lawn, you’ll need to eliminate products that can be harmful to them. Choose all-natural fertilizers and weed and pest preventatives.

Look for alternatives

If maintaining a lawn with pets seems like an

uphill battle, consider swapping out your landscape with a variety of materials. Scale back on grass, and incorporate groundcover, hardscape materials like pea gravel, or extend the patio.

Artificial turf also is an option, as it won’t brown

and wither. Some turf products can even be quickly and thoroughly cleaned with water.

It takes trial and error for pet parents to protect their lawns from the effects of having furry friends playing in the yard.

• Prybars are your friend. These tools, sometimes called crowbars, can be used to remove nails or pull materials apart.

Saladino Announces Paid Internship Opportunities For College Students

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced the return of internship opportunities for college students who are looking to gain meaningful work experience. The Town will offer an internship program for the 2024 summer season.

“Internships give students an advantage over other job seekers when it comes to work readiness, and I am proud that the Town will once again provide that opportunity for our residents,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This internship program provides an invaluable opportunity for students to receive mentorship

and supervision from experienced government professionals.”

This program compensates students at a competitive rate of $18 an hour, and students will work 19.5 hours per week. The program will operate May 30th through August 7th. Internships are available in the following Town Departments: Comptroller, General Services, Environmental Resources, InterGovernmental Affairs, Planning & Development, Public Information, Public Safety, Public Works/ Engineering, Town Attorney, Town Board, and Town Clerk. Interns will gain worksite

specific knowledge, learn departmental procedures, assist with general office duties and reports, develop an understanding of worksite specific projects and apply the knowledge gained to benefit the Town of Oyster Bay.

College students interested in internship opportunities must apply by April 12th.

Pravato Reminds Residents Second Half School Taxes Due

“New York State Law

allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Receiver Pravato explained. “After the 40 days, State Law requires

a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid. So, make your payment before May 10th and don’t delay, and you will ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.”

The Tax Office is open in both Town Hall North, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm to assist residents and accept payments with a check, cash or credit card*. On May 9th and 10th both offices will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill. There are also outdoor walkup windows, and drop boxes have been installed at both

locations for residents to make payments when the Tax Office is closed.

Saladino Seeks Nominations To Honor Local Veterans

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Oyster Bay Town Board are now accepting nominations in order to honor veterans at the Town’s ‘Salute to America’ Celebration scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 7:30 pm at TOBAY Beach. Residents are invited to nominate extraordinary individuals who have made a positive difference in our veteran communities.

“The Town of Oyster Bay’s ‘Salute to America’ Celebration provides the ideal backdrop to recognize veterans and individuals who continue to actively serve in the community and advocate for issues and concerns relative to veterans. The Town is proud to recognize and honor amazing individuals who have helped to shape our communities for the better through their continuing advocacy and exemplary community service each year,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I hope residents will consider submitting a nomination of an individual who deserves special recognition for their continued efforts

A new place to pause, reflect and reset has opened at Massapequa High School with the creation of Calm Corner. A room on the second floor has been transformed into a serene atmosphere, which students can use with the recommendation of a professional from the pupil personnel services department.

Principal Barbara Lowell said the idea came from a student who took the popular Mindfulness Matters class. After finding a space, visiting a student wellness center at MacArthur High School in Levittown and lots of planning, the idea became a reality for the second semester this year. The room was painted a calm color and filled with flexible

seating options, artwork, inspirational posters and different manipulatives.

“It was set up so students can take a pause from the day,” social worker Marisa Boulukos said. “It teaches them to self-regulate when they’re having a tough moment.”

Ms. Lowell explained that Calm Corner is part of a greater support system for students. Using the space to self-regulate, she said, is paired with receiving support from either a school guidance counselor, psychologist or social worker.

Calm Corner has a dedicated staff member who can support students and guide them through different activities.

“The feedback has been great,” Ms. Lowell said.

“We found that there was an increased need among students who were looking for a place to destress. They appreciate that Calm Corner is there and they have the ability to use different strategies.”

Ultimately, the purpose of Calm Corner is to support academic success. It is a space where students can regain focus, reduce stress levels and transition back to their instructional day.

“It really does give them confidence,” social worker Joanne Waters added. “They have a place to go to gather their thoughts.”

Calm Corner will be an evolving space, as plans are in the works to add a mural that will be created by Massapequa High School art students.

Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Support Group On Zoom

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is forming a new online support group for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 18-months. The group, which is free, will provide the opportunity for people to meet with others, and receive support.

Sessions will be held on Thursdays from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. on Zoom for 6 weeks from May 2nd through June 6, 2024. For more information and to register, call Nina Foley, LMSW at (516) 877-4315.

The Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support

Program offers emotional support and resources to people with and/or concerned about breast cancer. To reach the Hotline, which is staffed by volunteers who are breast cancer survivors, call 800877-8077 or online at breast-cancer.adelphi.edu. You are not alone.
