The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together

Long Island is the local chapter of the national nonproﬁt organization, Rebuilding Together. The charity provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families young children. Those who receive the free home repairs must meet their ﬁnancial criteria. Their mission is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They proudly help economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence.

In 1992, a small group of retirees were looking for ways to give back to their community. They saw how many homeowners were struggling to keep up with the expense of maintaining the homes. Seniors needed modiﬁcations so they could age in place safely. They reached out to the national organization Rebuilding Together, Inc. and soon became the local a liate, Rebuilding Together Long Island. Currently there are approximately 120 a liates across the country.

Today they have 100 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. These individuals come from all walks of life and work tirelessly to lend a helping hand with carpentry, electrical, plumbing repairs, along with home modiﬁcations weatherization, yard clean-up and more. They have provided repairs to over 2,600 local homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Su olk counties.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard work worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received assistance, including the touching letter below.

With the support of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work and involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island, however they need your help to keep up the momentum! There are three main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer: They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills; training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection (those fluent in English and in Spanish is a plus!)

2) Sponsor a Project: Attention business owners! You can sponsor a project they are actively working on, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to community service and to improving the quality of life for people on Long Island.

3) Donate: Consider making a donation at www. rebuildingtogetherlongisland.org! Funding is a continuous requirement to support their e orts and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our neighbors!

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced the return of internship opportunities for college students who are looking to gain meaningful work experience through an internship program being offered by the Town for the 2023 summer season.

“Internship give students an advantage over other job seekers when it comes to work readiness, and I am proud that the Town will once again provide that opportunity for our residents,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This internship program provides an invaluable opportunity for students

to receive mentorship and supervision from experienced government professionals.”

This federally-funded program compensates students at a rate of $18 an hour for work completed within various Town departments. Students will work 19.5 hours per week. The program will operate June 1st through August 9th. Funds have been granted to the Town by the Oyster Bay-North HempsteadGlen Cove Workforce Development Board. This internship program offers college students the ability to gain worksite specific knowledge, learn departmental procedures, assist with

general office duties and reports, develop an understanding of worksite specific projects and apply the knowledge gained to benefit the Town of Oyster Bay.

College students interested in internship opportunities must apply by April 17th. Applicants must submit a resume with their application, available at oysterbaytown.com/ internship. Massapequa Appoints New Leader For

The Massapequa School District announces the appointment of Ryan Ruf as the assistant superintendent of business and operations, effective July 1. Mr. Ruf brings extensive experience in financial leadership as well strong knowledge of curriculum and instruction, facilities planning, human resources and technology integration.

For the past eight years, he has worked at Eastern Suffolk BOCES serving as associate superintendent, deputy superintendent and, most recently, as chief operating officer, where he manages an annual budget of $450 million. Among his duties, Mr. Ruf serves as regional support for local school business officials, manages district security measures including leading a security committee, supervises matters related to food service, technology and transportation, and is responsible for the strategic planning process and longrange financial planning.

Before joining BOCES, Mr. Ruf was the assistant superintendent for business in the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District for nine years. He has also served as business administrator in the Sag Harbor School District and assistant to the deputy superintendent for business in Cold Spring Harbor. His career began as a middle school mathematics teacher in the upstate East Syracuse-Minoa Central School District.

Mr. Ruf holds a bachelor’s degree in science in education and mathematics from SUNY Geneseo, a master’s degree in educational administration from SUNY Oswego and a professional diploma in school business administration from Long Island University, C.W. Post. He belongs to several professional organizations including the New York State Council of School Superintendents and the

New York State Association of School Business Officials, of which he is vice president of the Suffolk County chapter.

On coming to Massapequa, Mr. Ruf said he is enthusiastic about returning to a financial leadership position in a public school district. He strives to put students first through outstanding educational programs while simultaneously developing fiscally responsible budgets.

Town, Fire And Water Officials Denounce State Housing Plan That Threatens Long Island

Don Clavin of Hempstead, as well as Oyster Bay Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato, to demand that State lawmakers eliminate the State Housing Plan to flood suburbs and singlefamily home neighbors with thousands of new apartments. This latest proposal by Governor Hochul – seemingly a repeat of last year’s plan to turn suburban neighborhoods into overcrowded urban centers – would result in high density housing flooding every community, as well as spot zoning in which large scale apartment buildings could pop up next to single-family homes.

“We must save our

suburbs from this illconceived plan as it would overcrowd classrooms, greatly increase traffic and cars parked on our streets, strain emergency services and threaten the environment. We join together to protect our most precious resource –our water supply, which is under attack by this latest plan of overdevelopment,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“When it comes to the environment, the largest plume in any sole-source aquifer in the United States sits under our land in the Town of Oyster Bay. Over a billion dollars are already needed to clean up the plume, and even more is needed for our water districts to keep ensuring that our drinking water is safe at the tap. Over a billion dollars are also needed to upgrade our sewage and septic systems which are already near capacity, with

many seeping into the ground. Our only landfill in Brookhaven is on the verge of permanent closure, and a garbage crisis looms for the current population as waste will need to be trucked off Long Island and no solution exists. For

these reasons and a host of others, we demand that State lawmakers eliminate the Governor’s Housing Mandate.”

The three Town Supervisors joined local district officials to voice their concerns of how the

Governor’s urbanization plan would negatively impact the environment, traffic, parking, emergency services, police protection, local utilities and schools. They also asked the public to join them in contacting state officials to demand

that this proposal not move forward.

Outdoor Stations Of The Cross – 1.5 Mile Walking Service – Offered By Catholic Cemeteries Of Long Island At Cemetery Of The Holy Rood On Good Friday

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island welcomes the Catholic faithful across Long Island to participate in its Stations of the Cross prayer service at Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury this Good Friday, April 7th. This prayer service, which is one of the largest attended events at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island each year, is celebrated annually on Good Friday, one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar. During the prayer service, the Catholic faithful will follow a 1.5 mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees.

Hundreds of Catholics are expected to take part in the Good Friday services at the

Cemetery of the Holy Rood.

Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with selfdirected tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.

Faithful utilizing the self-directed option who are walking the Stations of the Cross on their own can download the Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island Stations of the Cross Prayer Booklet as a guide with specific prayers at each station:

to 5 p.m., with the Chapel closing at 4:30 p.m. daily.

Friends Of America’s Vet Dogs Chinese Auction Fundraiser April 15

A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veterans-in-need, last week donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” started in 2015 and has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought

great credit to our military or to recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.

Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog ‘Sully’, who went on to serve President George W. Bush. ‘Sully’ now continues to serve wounded veterans at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” will hold their

primary annual fundraiser, a walk-through style Chinese Auction, in Sayville on April 15. Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach program of

the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” –
