What do you do when your campaign for mayor comes to a screeching halt by a lethal globetrotting virus that has the power to cause economic devastation in a matter of days?

My first hint that the campaign was changing was when a senior group canceled a meet the candidates event on Friday 13 out of fear of the coronavirus. Then, came the hoarding of toilet tissue and Purell and empty shelves in the grocery stores on Saturday. By Sunday with warm weather and crocuses finally making a debut as daffodils trumpeted in the breeze, something was very odd. Where were the people? I saw an elderly woman all bundled up with a hood and wearing knit gloves, carefully walking with a cane. I smiled and waved and as I started to approach her she cried out in fear and started to cry, “ Don’t come near me, I’m old, I’m a target. I don’t want to die!” It just broke my heart. I wanted to hug and comfort her but now in this new world I had to keep my distance. I assured her I wouldn’t come near her and turned around. This was all uncharted territory for me. The week before I was shaking hands, hugging and laughing with seniors, now people are afraid of one another, and afraid of me.

As the corona news of deaths skyrocketed and NY was essentially closed for business, I started getting calls from seniors who wanted to vote for me but were afraid to come out of their homes. The election was a few days away and I needed a miracle, and I got one. The governor canceled the village elections.

On Wednesday I went to the Village Hall on the off chance the election may still be on.

The sign on the door confirmed the elections were canceled. A couple came up behind me expecting to vote and annoyed that no notice was put out on the cancellation through social media or posted in the village kiosks.

I decided to go in search of optimism. I had met so many upbeat folks on the campaign trial so I wanted to see what the mood of the village was. Passing a bush with a St. Patty’s Day hat, I walked to Park Blvd. A PSA announcement from the railroad station cautioned people to wash their hands and stay 6 feet away from one another. I walked down the street past cherry trees now in full bloom framed by a cerulean sky. At the end of the block was Jam, my favorite breakfast spot only now closed. My flyer hung in the window against a backdrop of an empty business that was usually bustling.

Where were the people?

I spotted a father and his young son mailing a letter. Peter and his 10 year old son Philip spoke with me and didn’t run away, always a good sign. I asked Philip how he liked being out of school, “I want to go back to school. I miss my friends.” I asked if they have any elderly people living with them and Peter told me his parents live across the street but they are sheltering in place and they are staying away from them. No hugging, no kissing.

I saw another man on the street. Sporting a black jacket with an American flag was 92 year old Roy Citrano who lived in the village since 1953. Flashing a big smile I knew I found an optimist. “I live by myself and I am accustomed to being out. I’m going to continue to live my life and not live in fear.”

Then a cab pulled up and I watched as a woman wearing a blue jacket and pink knit hat exited and I noticed her wearing latex gloves as she entered the bank. She conducted her business in the lobby then removed her gloves and placed them in her pockets. Theresa Driscoll, a 77 year old Irish woman with twinkling blue eyes has lived in the village for 44 years. I asked how she felt about this new world we were living in. “I’m not going to stay home and cower in fear. I’m going to go out and live my life but I do take precautions.”

I then spotted Julie Wachter, this spry 76 year old was new to the village. “I love the senior center here. I met so many nice people there. I miss them now that it’s closed. But I still go about my daily life and I walk for an hour every day.” Just then her son Mark who works for the NYPD walked over and wanted to know what she was doing out. Rob Crozier a friend spotted Mark. Now we had a party but kept our 6 feet social distance. I knew if I walked in the village I could find optimism again in spite of everything that is happening. Then Nikki the dog came by to say hello to everyone. I was feeling better already.

As I walked to my car I got a call from one of my seniors Larry Z who said he was sorry the election was off because he wanted to vote for me. “I have a virus”. I asked what he is taking. “I take two shots a day”. What kind of shots? “Tequila! I take two shots every day and I immediately feel better!”

Now that is an optimist!

JONES BEACH MAKES HISTORY WITH DRIVE THROUGH CORONA TESTING

By Dr. Cynthia Paulis Mayoral Candidate For Massapequa Park If you build it they will come, but will they? In an effort to mass test people in a mobile unit away from a hospital setting, Governor Cuomo launched an ingenious and highly efficient way to test for Covid-19. Set on the barrier island of Jones Beach built in 1930 by Robert Moses as a recreational escape for the working masses, there is now a site to track down and identify a globe trekking killer and contain the havoc this virus caused worldwide.

The results are sent to Northwell and processed with results coming back in 3 days. The patients are notified by phone of the results.” Conwall went on to explain how the mobile site in New Rochelle, the epicenter of the NY outbreak, processed 1800 people a day during a four day testing period. Additional mobile testing centers are scheduled to be set up at Stonybrook the next day and around designated sites on Long Island.

As a helicopter circled overhead the reporters lined up expecting to see Governor Cuomo land but it didn’t happen. After an hour a few cars arrived at the check point. Some drivers were wearing masks, others were not. Those cars that did not have an appointment were given a sheet of paper with the appointment hotline number, instructed to call it and then directed around the guardhouse. Soon a steady stream of cars arrived and the process was very efficient and effortless. As each car lined up they were sequenced into each tent and were out in less than 15 minutes.

One car arrived with two children in the back and were sent down the road to be tested. Curious seagulls perched on the posts to the nature center watching the parade of cars. As the family of four navigated the turns I suddenly realized this is the same road the Holiday Festival of Lights is held in December and now it’s a road to hope to catch and contain a deadly virus.

Jason Conwall, Deputy Communications Director to Governor Cuomo, walked over to the reporters to explain how the system works and answered our questions. “Anyone who suspects they may have Covid-19 or come in contact with someone who has a confirmed case of Covid-19 has to first call the hot line at 888-364-3065. A screener will determine if they meet testing center criteria and if they do they are given an appointment to come to the center. This is a free testing and you don’t need a referral from a doctor. The center is open from 8am to 8pm. Each tent can accommodate two cars at a time, processing six cars simultaneously. The person remains in the car, rolls the window down and has the nose and mouth swabbed.

With such an overwhelming number of people affected by the virus and a limited amount of doctors and nurses to handle the patients, I asked how retired medical professionals can get involved. Juggling two phones he contacted Albany and located the information. Go to the New York State Department of Health Website and go to the section marked Providers. There is a section Call for Help Retired Health Professionals. Click on the section marked complete the survey. NYS is actively seeking qualified retired health professionals and related professionals who are interested in supporting the state’s response.

Driving down to the west end beach past sand dunes and Torrey pines a sign flashed Covid-19 SAMPLE AREA. PRESENT ID. KEEP WINDOWS CLOSED. At the first check point, a round art deco guardhouse, a man wearing a surgical mask directed me over to the crowd of reporters parked on the lawn of the NY State Park Police Headquarters. Police and state troopers stood guard by the first check point. A half a mile up the road was a turnaround to a second check point guarded by a state trooper. In the distance were three white tents erected in the parking lot of the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center. These were the same type tents used during the famous Bethpage Air Show on Memorial Day weekend that attracts millions to the beach to mark the beginning of summer. Now the grim reality was evident how our world suddenly changed, as brave lab techs suited up in hazmat gear waited for the cars to arrive.

When It Can Be Smart To Hire A Painting Pro Few things can revitalize a home more readily than a fresh coat of paint.

Thanks in part to the affordability of paint and its ease of application, painting is something that even novice DIYers can typically handle. Franchise owner, Sarina Jagtiani, has been working in Early Childhood Education for ten years and received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Early Childhood Education.

Seuss Celebration Spans A Week March 2 would have been the 116th birthday of famed children’s author Dr. Seuss, but students and teachers at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District felt that a oneday celebration wasn’t enough.

Instead, the school

devoted an entire week to Dr. Seuss and the books that made him famous. It started off with “Cat in the Hat” day, as all students were encouraged to wear crazy hats. Teachers brought in their favorite books to share with their students.

It was appropriate to

wear silly or mismatched socks on “Fox in Socks” day, when was the students’ opportunity to bring in books to share with their classmates.

Children wore green and brought in snacks to eat during independent reading time on “Green Eggs and Ham” day, and wore pajamas and read

by flash light on “The Sleep Book” day.

Thing 1 and Thing 2, characters popularized in “Cat in the Hat,” also had their own day. Children came into school with crazy hairstyles and brought in Dr. Seuss books to read. Several classes partnered up for buddy

reading, such as first graders in Melanie Kane’s class who joined up with second graders from Antoinette MacPherson’s class.

Ms. Kane noted that shared reading is a great learning experience that fosters interest in literature and promotes the development of

literacy skills.

“Seuss Week was presented in a way that made reading fun,” Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said, “but also celebrated an author that has made a positive impact in the education of young readers.”
