Councilman Hand Launches Pet Food & Supply Drive in Partnership with LI Cares dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members.

“Pets truly are members of our family,” said Councilman Hand.

“Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at home with their loved ones. The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner

with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.”

The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations.

“Unfortunately many beloved pets are placed

into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Councilman Hand. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought.

Special Olympics Polar Plunge at TOBAY

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently participated in the Special Olympics New York Polar Plunge, held annually at TOBAY Beach to benefit this

great cause. Participants were also supported by Councilman Tom Hand and Councilwoman Laura Maier, who cheered on plungers as they ran into the icy waters at

TOBAY while following an extensive list of COVID safety protocols.

The Supervisor was joined in the effort by Assemblyman Michael Durso.

Labriola Cautions Residents To Be On Lookout For Cold Stun Turtles

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola reminds residents, there is an increased number of sea turtles stranded on north shore beaches due to a condition called cold stunning.

“When water temperatures drop below approximately 50 degrees, sea turtles become lethargic and are unable to swim, as they are basically experiencing hypothermia,” said Councilman Labriola.

“When this occurs, they can float up to the surface

and become vulnerable to boat strikes or wash ashore and become stranded, which can be fatal. If you see a turtle on the shoreline, please do not put it back into the water.

Instead, cover the turtle with seaweed or call the New York Marine Rescue Center.”

The Town of Oyster Bay, in partnership with the New York Marine Rescue Center, recently installed signage at north shore beaches to help educate the public about this condition. The signage

also provides guidelines on what to do and what not to do if you come upon a stranded turtle.

Tips include: • Move the turtle above the high tide line • DO NOT put the turtle back in the water • Cover the turtle with seaweed or dry wrack • Mark the spot with a piece of beach debris or draw an arrow in the sand • Call the NY Marine Rescue Center Hotline at (631) 369-9829.

The Conveniece Of Dog Strollers Dog strollers have surged in popularity in recent years, particularly as pets are allowed in locations that might have been off limits in years past. It’s common to see pet owners scooting their

prized pooches around in strollers once used exclusively for small children. Dog owners who have never owned a dog stroller before may wonder just how useful they can be.

Some people have replaced

traditional dog carriers with strollers, which tend to be more ergonomic and comfortable to use than carriers. Strollers can be a convenient means for taking dogs (typically smaller pups) to busy

public locations or even to work. Strollers also can keep dogs out of the elements when the weather can be difficult for them to handle. Older dogs with mobility issues can benefit from strollers because they

still enable the dogs to get fresh air without tiring them out. Also, people who own multiple dogs may find strollers make it easy to take multiple pooches out and about. Strollers also let small dogs rest

while other dogs gets more exercise walking alongside the stroller. Dog strollers come in a range of sizes and can be purchased where most pet supplies are sold.

The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck.

Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true.

Below is a story about Patricia, who recently had her wish granted. You could be next!

Patricia Bachmore is a 75 year old resident of Amityville. She wished for new furniture and thanks to the Long Island chapter of this national nonprofit, her wish was granted!

Patricia has fostered and socialized rescue kittens and cats for years. Understandably, that took a toll on her furniture. Although the furniture was old and falling apart, she could not afford to replace it on her own because of her limited income. In December of 2020, The Twilight Wish Foundation granted her with a new sofa and kitchen chairs, which she wished for.

In addition to her work with rescue organizations, Patricia is part of the Amityville neighborhood watch program and also works with the Town

of Babylon’s 311 citizens complaint unit.

She also assists other senior citizens in her mobile home park with grocery shopping and other errands. THANK YOU PATRICIA FOR ALL OF YOUR SELFLESS EFFORTS! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions.
