Athletic Director Earns Master Certification

Shannon McEntee, the director of physical education, health, athletics and recreation for the Massapequa School District, has been named a Certified Master Athletic Administrator. The designation, from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, recognizes her commitment to professional development.

Two years ago, Ms. McEntee was named a Certified Athletic Administrator through NIAAA’s accredited program and continued on to earn the masterlevel certification this year. She had to complete several required leadership training courses as well as electives of her choosing. Among the courses she completed were Management of Game and Event Announcing, Ethical Decision-Making

SHANNON McENTEE

in Education-Based Interscholastic Sport Programs and Stress: Causes, Effects and Strategies. She participated in a combination of online and in-person workshops.

“The courses are very content-specific and informative, and geared to what we do day to day,” she said.

Ms. McEntee also had to submit a project that

reflected her work as an athletic administrator. She used Massapequa’s coaching handbook, which she revised to reflect current practices in Massapequa’s athletic programs, updated communication processes and new legal requirements. Several of the changes to the handbook, she said, were based on knowledge she gained from the leadership courses she has taken through NIAAA.

“I just want to continue to grow and get better at what I do,” Ms. McEntee said, about her pursuit of the Certified Master Athletic Administrator designation.

“Everything that I’ve learned has gone into immediate application for the benefit of Massapequa’s physical education and athletics programs, and our students.”

Polar Plunge Returns To TOBAY Beach March 23rd ‘Freezin’ For A Reason’ Benefits Special Olympics New York

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto invite residents to be “Freezin’ for a Reason” at the annual Polar Plunge benefitting Special Olympics New York on Saturday, March 23rd at TOBAY Beach.

“Many of our residents head to TOBAY Beach for summer fun, but this event provides an enjoyable and charitable reason to spend a great day at the beach much sooner,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Participants will have an opportunity to prove their mettle and their compassion by wading into the chilly waters of TOBAY

Spring is here, and The Massapequa Chamber has been very busy getting ready for some major events. We are constantly looking for ways to help our local businesses and community out, and we have some new programs we wanted to share with everyone.

Joe Fackler grew up living in Long Beach, New York he now lives and works in Massapequa. His life revolves around his family, selling Real Estate and Coaching Softball.

Joe became successful in Real Estate by communicating with his clients and making connections.

he is,” said Nicole Erker, mother of Sienna Erker, who was the catcher of 2023 World Series Team.

He began coaching the Little League World Series team along with fellow coaches Dom Fontana and the team manager Rich Eaton. “Dom and Rich are the best of the best” Joe said.

“I would work by listening to what clients want rather than telling them what they want,” Joe said. By 2018, along with many other accomplishments and awards, Joe was given the achievement of being recognized in “Top Agent Magazine” where specifically, he was noticed for being one of the top agents on Long Island. One of his greatest interests since 2008, is serving as a coach for the Massapequa International Little League team where he also sits on the board of directors. He became interested in 2008 when he played father-daughter tee-ball with his then 3-year-old daughter Jessica.

Joe, like the other coaches, has a different style of helping the players in the time of need. When it comes to the games and practices, he wants the kids to win and feel proud of themselves. However, he always makes sure the kids are not stressed out about whether they win or lose. “Remain calm. They’re kids. They’re going to make mistakes. Everybody wants to win but you have to stay calm,” he said. He believes in core values such as respect for both the players and the coaches. While coaches get a lot of recognition for their strategies within games and practices, the parents get to see a lot on the sidelines that many people don’t always see. “Joe brought a little more light to heavy practices... Coach Joe was the guy who had fun with them and gave them a different perspective,” said Josie Rios, the parent of Ava Rios, who played on Joe’s 2023 World Series Team. “He coached our kids without a kid on the team and he still coaches for the local little league. I think he just dedicates a lot of time to the love of the game. It just shows what kind of person

With hard work and lots of practices, the Massapequa Softball Little League team had the chance to participate in the World Series Championship game in Greenville North Carolina that took place on August 13, 2023.

“Our team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back and took home the title of Little League World Series Champions, the team finished undefeated with 19 Wins and 0 Losses” Joe said “This was a major win for not only Massapequa but New York State as well. The game would be known as the first world series championship game to be won by any Little League softball team in New York State.

Coach Joe has been a true helper to these kids as they have been to him. While they get good training and a respectful coach, he gets to give back to the community which he loves so much. “He’s not just a coach to these girls, he’s their friend,” Rios said. Now Joe says its back to reality and back to work changing people’s lifestyles in the form of selling homes throughout Long Island. If you’re thinking of selling or buying a home on Long Island, reach out to Joe for your Real Estate needs.

Town Launches Pet Food & Supply Drive In Partnership With LI Cares

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will once again host a Pet Food & Supply Drive in partnership with Long Island Cares. The drive will take place through March 31st with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs,

cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members.

“Unfortunately, many pets are oftentimes placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” said Supervisor Saladino. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Pet

food drives like this one can be a real lifesaver for both pets and their families.”

The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations.

“These pet food and supply donation drives can help countless animals stay

“Into the Magic Shop” is one of four books that serves as inspiration for students in Massapequa High School’s Mindfulness Matters course, but it perhaps has the most visual impact. Every year, students create posters featuring quotes from the book, which are used to decorate the classroom.

On Feb. 6 and 7, the 115 students taking Mindfulness Matters presented their posters, which will be a fixture on the classroom walls for the 12 months. Teacher Lisa Davi said that students were asked to include seven to 10 quotes from the book on their posters, along with a personalized motif.

During the presentations, each student selected one quote and explained why it was meaningful. The book, by Dr. James Doty,

at home with their loved ones,” said Councilman Hand. “The Town is proud to once again partner with Long Island Cares for this important cause.”

Those interested in supporting the Town’s Pet Food & Supply Drive can place donated items in dropoff boxes located at both Town Hall offices, including Town Hall North at

54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South at 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa, during regular business hours.

Town Hall locations are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. For more information, visit www.licares.org or call the Town’s Public Information Office at (516) 624-6380.

Literary Posters Promote Mindfulness

is a true story about the author, who grew up poor but went on to become a successful neurosurgeon. The turning point of his life was when he went into a magic shop and met a woman who taught him how to manifest his greatest desires.

“It’s a real story about a real kid who came from nothing and achieved so much,” Ms. Davi said. “The book is inspiring to students on how to be in control of their own lives.”

“Into the Magic Shop” builds on the mindfulness tools that students acquire from the first book of the year, “The Four Agreements.” It gives students greater knowledge on how to set intentions and work to achieve their goals.

Ms. Davi said that she met the author two years ago during a trip of California, and shared

with him the poster project. As students read the book, they take notes in a journal and identify quotes that ultimately become part of their posters.

“The posters should be an expression of themselves and what they love,” she said. “You can see the work that goes into them. They’re really impressive and thoughtprovoking, and I like how the quotes relate to their own lives.”

Mindfulness Matters is an English elective course open to students in grades 10-12. The class meets every other day for the entire year and continues to be one of the most popular elective classes in the school. Ms. Davi said she regularly receives feedback from graduates on how the skills learned in class have helped them after high school.
